January - Book 1

Title: Solutions and Other Problems
Author: Allie Brosh
Number of pages: 518

I’d read Allie’s Hypberbole and a Half and loved it. Due to a misspelling of her name on Amazon I had no idea until recently that she’d written a second book, so once I discovered that it was an immediate purchase!

A lot had happened to Allie since Hypberbole and a Half and, as always, she is brutally honest in her account of it. Illness, closely followed by the loss of her younger sister. A divorce. Trying to adjust to an entirely new reality. Trying to come to terms with grief, and guilt, and yourself…

Allie has her very own style – a blend of art and the written word. It’s very effective in getting her thoughts and feelings across. The way that she depicts herself can be amusing, and heart-breaking – sometimes both at the same time, as odd as that may sound.

It isn’t all sad. I laughed out loud at Allie’s first encounter with a neighbour. The story about how her family kept finding horse poo in the house will stick with me for a long time. I loved the chapter about her new feline companion. And the neighbour kid who keeps on popping up is highly amusing.

The most powerful pieces, though, are about Allie and the complex relationship she had with her sister. They’re so very honest, and real. There is that big question of what could have been. If only they’d understood the other better. If only they’d had more time. If only…

Those and the final chapter, about trying to befriend yourself, hit hard. Sometimes the most difficult person to love, or even like, is you. We’re often so much tougher on ourselves than we are on others. As hard as it is, we mustn’t give up – we’re stuck with ourselves for the rest of our lives, and if we don’t learn to be kind to ourselves we have an unnecessarily tough journey ahead.

I can’t say that there is anything I dislike about this book. I mean, I really feel for Allie and everything that she has been through. I hope that her fortunes change, and that her future looks bright. As a reader, though, who’s also dealing with health issues, and who knows what it’s like to have less-than-desirable mental health it makes for an excellent read.

I highly recommend it. And if you want to try her work for free, here's a chapter: Richard  Open in new Window. - though it looks nicer in book form!

I have chosen this book for January because there have been many, many changes in Allie's life, as said, and the book is about trying to find her feet again.

Because I love dragons!
