One by One by Ruth Ware | 384 pages pages I think this might be the first Ruth Ware book that I've read. I've been meaning to check out her books for a while, thanks to the fact that Brooke ![]() This book was obviously a modern reimagining of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. Not that that's a bad thing necessarily; it's a classic tale and one that I've really enjoyed in the past (The Red Ten limited comic series by Tyler James is fantastic), so I was excited to check out this book. I had mixed feelings on the book itself; I pegged the killer pretty early on in the narrative, and the tech startup company everyone worked for was kind of lame and not very well thought through. But the characters were all decently realized and their interactions with each other were pretty good. Overall, I'd say it was an entertaining read and a solid but not particularly impressive take on the Agatha Christie classic. Which leaves me a bit conflicted about her as a writer; from what I've read it seems like this is her thing... taking existing classic mystery stories and putting her own spin on them. And if that's the case, fine... but if they're all kind of subpar reimaginings of the classics, I think I might prefer to read the classics. Still, the book was well written enough that I'd definitely consider reading another of her books in the future to see if maybe this one was just a middle-of-the-road title. |
