A month-long novel-planning challenge. NaNoWriMo'ers welcome! 2025 SIGNUPS ARE CLOSED. |
Contest time, once again. Now that you have a few of these under your belt, this should be a somewhat easy one. And this round has a lot of potential and options. The Assignment: Write a story that sets up your plot. EXAMPLE: The Lord of the Rings story revolves around the One Ring, its significance, and how it's destroyed. But how did Frodo get the One Ring in the first place? We learn that in The Hobbit. You obviously can't write a full-scale novel in 15 minutes, but you could write the scene where Bilbo encounters Gollum and stumbles across the ring. That would be a background story that sets up the plot in Lord of the Rings. It's background story time. What this means is that you need to come up with something that happens before the novel starts. This probably won't be used in the actual novel unless it's a flashback or memory but that's okay. Going a little behind in the timeline for a trial story is helpful in other ways. Some thoughts to consider: What is the main plot? Where does the story start? Which character do you want to use as POV? The goal here is to try out some of the writing for the story with something within the same world and relating to what you are about to write without actually starting the novel. So, we pick a spot further up that relates to the novel. For example, one of my series has book 1 focusing on a murder. It starts with the detectives already going to the mansion for the investigation, which means the old guy is dead. For the assignment, I could show the murder. When it comes to the romance, I'm way behind on prep wise, if I used that novel then I have a few options. I could go with the cop and show the scene that the other character lectures him about. Or I could go from the other character's point of view and maybe do a story about him meeting Big Daddy J, someone he goes on a date with at the start of the novel. Different options exist. It just depends on your story. |
