“Ladies and Gentlemen!” Caesar Flickerman started, addressing the crowd. “For many years, you have expressed a desire for the Hunger Games to have a bit of a.... desireable element, shall we say.” He grinned. The crowd cheered enthusiastically. “As you are aware,” he continued, “the tributes are already in the arena fighting to the death. While pulling these tributes from the existing pool of victors was a twist, I am here to tell you we have another one planned! And I am sure you will love it!”
“We have to keep moving,” Katniss maintained. “We don’t know what other surprises this place might have in store for us.”
Peeta sighed. “I hate to say it but she’s right. We’re all tired. I mean we’ve been running around all day. But sitting still just makes us vulnerable,” he said to Finnick, getting to his feet. “We need to move.”
The other man followed suit, frowning and picking up his trident. “You’re definitely right about that. We should move. Lead on Katniss.”
The three began to walk through the jungle in silence, the quiet only being disturbed by the crunching of leaves. Suddenly, they were startled by a series of screams echoing around the arena, each of which were abruptly cut off. “This can’t be good,” Finnick mumbled, gripping his weapon as the screams became closer and closer to the trio.
Suddenly, a well-concealed trapdoor opened under Katniss. She screamed as she fell through the hole, which was abruptly cut off as the door slammed shut again.
“Katniss!” Peeta yelled, running to the spot where she had disappeared and searching the ground for any sign of her. Finnick dropped down beside him, searching the patch of ground where the trapdoor was.
“Where’d she go?” Peeta yelled. “There’s not even a seam or anything!” He frantically scratched at the ground, desperate for any way to find her.
“I don’t think there’s anything we can do,” Finnick sighed, looking at Peeta.
“There’s got to be a way to find her!” he argued.
“I’m sorry Peeta but we can’t help her, wherever she is,” Finnick said.
Peeta looked at the ground forlornly before reluctantly standing up. “We’ll find her,” he decided.
“Until then we have to keep moving,” Finnick maintained.
“Fine,” Peeta sighed, casting one last glance at the spot where Katniss had disappeared before continuing on through the jungle.
