"Hmm," Gwen thought, "First we need some meat, then bread, and if there's enough left over, a cup of tea at the Painted Lady." She walked down the streets of the little town, passing different shops, proffering to go where she'd always gone. Soon, Gwen entered one of the butchers in town.
"Good morning," Gwen said, entering the shop. The teenage boy behind the counter looked up.
"G-Gwen, good morning," Jacob, son of the butcher, replied, "Here for your usual?"
"Yes I am," Gwen said. Gwen looked at Jacob as she approached. She could see him blush a little. "Why doesn't he ask me out if he likes me?" she wondered as she was given some chicken and some salted lamb. "Jacob, why did you give me this spice as well?" Gwen asked, looking over the order to make sure she got everything.
"It's something dad came up with. He wanted a sample given to our best customers," Jacob said.
"Oh, then tell your father, "Thank you,' for me. I must be off," Gwen said, leaving some money and turning to leave.
"Uh Gwen," Jacob said. Gwen stopped and turned.
"Yes?" she asked. Jacob looked at her beautiful face and wonderful white hair. As he tried saying something, nothing came out.
"Never mind," Jacob said, looking away.
"All right," Gwen said before leaving the butcher. And that's how many boys were with Gwen. They'd try asking or saying something, but never got around to it. And Gwen was sure if she took the initiative, they'd probably reject her.
As she continued on her shopping, she came to her next place, the bakery. Like the butcher's, Gwen and her father were regular patrons here. And there was another boy who had a crush on Gwen as well. Gwen opened the door and saw the owner of the bakery, and head baker, Wade.
"Hello Gwen," Wade called, "Here for your usual loaf of bread?"
"Yes," Gwen said, coming to the counter.
"Peter, get out here with the order for Fionn and his daughter," Wade yelled in back.
"Yes father!" came a voice from the back and into the room came a black haired boy of average build and stood three inches shorter than Gwen. "Hello Gwen," Peter said, carrying a loaf of bread. Gwen handed over the money and smiled.
"Is this everything?" Wade asked.
"Yes, now I'm off to have some tea at the Painted Lady," Gwen said, looking from Wade to Peter.
"M-m-m-may I join you?" Peter suddenly blurted out, turning red in the face and glancing at his father.
"Uh, can you leave work?" Gwen asked, giggling a little. Peter looked at his father.
"The farmer's loaves are out and cooling?" Wade asked Peter. He nodded. "The be back before noon." Peter took off his working apron and walked around the counter.
"So, what type of tea do you like?" Peter asked, blushing as they walked down the street to the Painted Lady, the local pub and hotel for travelers.
"Oh most any kind," Gwen replied, smiling.
