As the day went on, I noticed that I wasn't changing back, like before. I watched the hours pass, in my feminine body, my excitement growing.
"It's starting to look like you might've finally stabilized," Mom said.
"I certainly hope so," I replied.
That night, when I went to bed, I slept naked, instead of putting on my nightgown. I didn't want anything to come between my eyes and hands, and the body of Alyssa Vance.
The next morning, when I woke up, I still hadn't changed. I was glad. The face in the mirror gave no hint that the person it belonged to had once been a boy.
Of course, that meant I had to go shopping yet again. This time, since it was Saturday, Mom drove Beth and me.
At Our Founders Mall, near the center of the city, I picked out enough new clothes to hold me over until a reasonable amount of time had passed, then said, "Let's look at the swimsuits."
"Lyssa," Beth said, "it's almost the end of beach season. Why get a suit now?"
"Maybe I won't spend a lot of time at the beach," I replied, "but we've still got a swimming pool. C'mon, let's see what they've got."
As I looked at the styles, Beth caught my attention. "Hey, Lyssa, check this out."
I went to where she was standing. At first, I thought she was looking at the swimsuit on the mannequin. Then, the mannequin's features caught my eye. "Holy cow! It looks like Cait Spenser!"
"Except she's got hair," Beth said.
I nodded. "And she keeps her nose higher in the air."
"Come on, girls," Mom lectured. "I thought I raised you better than to say mean things about people, behind their backs."
As we shopped, I thought, I wonder what Cait would say, if she knew I had finally turned into a girl?
*Congratulations.*
I turned around. Did I just hear Cait speak to me? I couldn't see her anywhere. Besides, I hadn't spoken aloud, so how could she have heard me? I chalked it up to low blood sugar.
