Math Class

    by: defigrulatorreturns Author IconMail Icon
Sam headed over to the center of the room where he usually sat, only to find it already occupied by some other guy. brown hair, he thinks his name was Bryan or something. Nervous to speak up to anyone, Sam hesitantly said, "Excuse me, this is my seat."

Bryan looked at Sam, confused. "No it's not." He said.

Sam was dumbfounded, he'd sat there all school year, and it was April! Bryan looked over his shoulder unsure, it was clear he barely knew Sam at all.

"Isn't your seat back there?" he pointed to the back of the room.

Sam looked to where Bryan was pointing. The rest of his classmates had finished filing into the room and in the back there remained only one empty seat, by where the slackers sat. the girls who didn't care about the class. There was a curvy black girl named Shaunda, and a blonde ditz named Britt. Both of them dressed like there were no rules, showing way too much skin. Shaunda was texting away on her iPhone, and Britt was literally staring off into space like there was nothing going on upstairs.

The last thing Sam wanted was to sit near those imbeciles. He hated Math as much as the next guy, but he wanted to get good grades! That's why he sat so close to the front of the class. For a second, Sam almost gave a retort at this change of location, but he chose not to, and begrudgingly made his way to the back of the room. He sat down, and immediately sat up a little thinking that he had sat on a cushion of some kind. Lookin gdown there was nothing there. 'How odd' he thought to himself before sitting down on his slightly larger rear. Shaunda and Britt paid him almost no notice. Sam especially didn't like Shaunda. She hung out with Kam and his crowd. They were known to hang all over them at street races that Kam and his boys participated in. They were also known for being easy.

Sam opened his Math book to the current chapter as Mr. Tristan entered the room and began lecturing. They were learning about Slope today, one of the few things Sam could wrap his head around. He took notes as usual, trying to keep up with everything Mr. Tristan was going through, but it was difficult to see the board since it was so far away. His mind kept drifting back to what he had watched on CNN that morning. As his mind drifted, other small changes were occurring. His blue jeans began to fade in color from their bright blue, becoming more pale. His pockets disappeared. And his backpack became smaller, slightly more compact than before, it was formally a light green color, but now it became darker, almost black, while its straps became more golden in color.

Sam was thinking about the election when a sudden urge hit him. He wanted to do something...with his fingers. Something that he usually did in class. Almost in a daze, he reached into his bag and pulled out an iPhone. Which was strange, he never remembered owning an iPhone. He opned it up, and saw the background was a picture of the band Fallout Boy. Now the notion of this not being his iPhone was ridiculous. He'd seen that background a million times! of course it was his iPhone. He scrolled through his menu, very quickly and with ease, as he'd done this a thousand times before. As he did, Sam's fingernails began to grow slightly. He opened up his inbox to see a bunch of text messages from names he only half-remembered, as if in a dream.

He had a variety of texts from all of them, as if they were in previous conversations. He was about to text Fatima, when he was interrupted.

"Excuse me, but there's no texting in this class. Sam. You know the rules." Sam looked up in shock. A teacher had never called him out on anything before.

"You heard me, put 'er away." Part of Sam hesitated. He was angry. Why should he have to listen to this prick? But he did put his phone back into his bag.

"You too Shaunda!" Mr. Tristan yelled. Shaunda muttered some swear words under her breath but put her phone away as well.

From that point on, Sam tried his hardest to focus on the material, but he just wasn't able to grasp it. He'd much rather be texting his friends. It was strange, he didn't remember ignoring schoolwork and texting friends irresponsibly in class before, but there was definitely the desire to do just that. Ontop of that, not only was he not able to grasp slope, but he had trouble understanding the side equations that Mr. Tristan had up on the board. He always hated Math, but he never remembered it being THIS difficult or THIS boring. It was all very strange.

Beneath him, Sam's shoes had begun to lose their laces, the tops thinned down to mere straps, until he was only wearing flip flops.the sole of his new flip flops turned yellow, the straps grew little yellow bows.

After what seemed like an age, class was dismissed for the day. "Thank God", Sam said internally. Unfortunately he knew it was only first period and the day had just begun.
