Chapter #34

waking up for dinner

    by: DrZaaijer Author IconMail Icon
When you woke up, you were in your crib No one woke you up, you had woken up on your own. You were a little damp now, but didn't need a change yet. There wasn't any need to cry out, you had a plushie in your crib and that was good enough entertainment for now.

While playing you noticed Theresa walking past your room. She looked to be in a hurry. She didn't even look in to see you were up. There were other strange sounds in the house too. Mom called out to Theresa that they had to hurry and that dad will meet them there. You didn't know what there was. You wished you knew, but there wasn't a way to find out. You supposed someone would tell you what was going on. Or that they would take you with them.

The more you heard, the more concerned you got. Something was wrong you could just tell. You decided to cry out.

Mom came in, she had a smile on her face. But there was something wrong with the smile.

"Jason, we have to go out for a while. Josie will be staying with you while we are gone." She said it in the same happy sing song voice you had grown used to now that you were treated like a two year old. But the sense that there was something wrong kept nagging at you. Josie was Jerry's babysitter. You suppose she was your babysitter now, but she hadn't sat you since you swapped with Jerry.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing is wrong. We are just going out for a while."

When you couldn't convince her to tell you what was wrong you said, "I wanna come,"

"You can't. You'll have a good time with Josie. She wants to see you."

Mom was keeping something from you. You didn't know what and she wouldn't tell you. She had kept other things from you before since the swap, but this was different you knew something was really wrong.

You didn't know it and no one told you, but Jerry had been hit by a car. He might have been treated like a teen, but he was still a toddler in his actions and he stepped off the curve without looking. A car had hit him and he was taken to the hospital. No one in the family wanted to tell you that Jerry was hurt. They didn't want to upset you. They were treating you like you wanted them to, like a two year old.

Josie came over and babysat. She didn't know what had happened either. Not that she would tell you if she did. She took care of your needs, fed you, changed you, played with you put you to bed but you were worried. You fell asleep before anyone returned home.

In the morning, you noticed that Jerry wasn't around. When you asked about it, your family tried to put you off. When you insisted (as best you could) they minimized what had happened, just saying that Jerry got hurt and would be back soon. But when Jerry hadn't returned all day or into the next you knew something serious had happened. You couldn't piece it all together, but you had an idea as you could hear the people around you. They tried to keep it from you, by going into other rooms or talking in whispers.

At first you were worried about Jerry. Then as time passed you also started to worry about yourself. There wasn't any way to return to normal without a swap from Jerry. Until he returned you were stuck being treated like a toddler. Suddenly it didn't seem to be such a good idea to swap "your place in the family" with Jerry.
