After returning the ores to the Skylab, the party disembarked the ships and headed back to their respective work zones.
Meanwhile, the fighters, cruisers and the bombers returned back to the hangar where they would be re-armed and refuelled for the next combat mission.
While in their rooms, a message came over the communications system. Lt. Stantham had requested Jason and his team for debriefing.
After a little while, Jason and his team went to see Lt Stantham in his office. The Lt offered them a seat.
Now pilots, I understand that you were sent on a mission to intercept and prevent MMO ships taking the ores from that planet. Am I correct?
The pilots all in unison replied Yes, Sir. Lt Stantham leaned back in his chair and whispered loudly so that the pilots could hear him.
While you were on your way to the planet, you encountered groups of MMO and VRU ships. Did you not?
Yes, Sir rang out again.
It also seems that there was some fighting above the planet and in the atmosphere. However, a coded radio message also came through saying that a group of workers from Skylab had been located by MMO and were forced to retreat into some sort of edifice. It wasn’t until one of you flew into this edifice and noticed them waiting there. Which one of you found them and radioed for the drop ships?
The pilot responsible stepped forward and coolly replied I found them and radioed for the drop ships. I then waited for the drop ships before escorting them to the ships.
Lt Stantham then requested the rest of the pilots over and congratulated them for going above and beyond the call of duty. He then called Jason over shook his hand. After the congratulations were given, Lt Stantham promoted the all of the pilots from Chief Space Pilots to Basic Sergeants. He then gave them all of the money that they had earned from the mission and the missions before then.
The newly promoted Basic Sergeants headed to the bar for a well earned drink. The most senior pilot in the group bought each round of drinks for them.
A few drinks later, the pilots headed to their rooms.
After a while (about 11 hours or so), the pilots received a call over the communication’s array to form up in the hangar for mission briefing. Grabbing whatever food they could, the pilots knew that they would not have enough time for their early meal, so they ate on the way down to the hangar. They arrived just before the Basic Lt started the mission briefing.
The new mission was to take command of an outpost on the D-class planet of Madeena 2. Madeena 2 is a smallish planet, about the same size as Earth, which could sustain life if the inhabitants could adapt to the conditions.
Anyway, there was only a small group of Liberator fighters that headed into the battle zone to clear the path for the rest of the fighters and the cruisers. Grabbing whatever weapons from pistols to rifles and shotguns to grenades and mines that they could, they jumped into their cockpits and launched from the hangar.
Joining the small squadron of Liberators, they jumped to the next world. This time, they would have to fly to another jump gate where it would take them to the world where Madeena 2 was located. Activating their jump engines (new engines specially built into the ships when jumping through gates at high velocities rather than using their main engines), they reached the world. Madeena 2 was about 369,000 km away. This would take them about 20 minutes with main engines to reach the planet.
20 minutes later, they reached Madeena 2 and flew down into the planet’s lower atmosphere. When they arrived in the atmosphere, they saw that MMO and EIC ground troops were fighting each to gain control of the radio beacon. Fierce fighting meant that the ground troops were starting to tire. Meanwhile, back in the sky, MMO fighters and bombers were strafing and bombing enemy positions. There was one small outpost left before the beacon. The EIC pilots knew that they were the soldiers’ only hope of survival and possibly victory. There were bodies from both companies strewn all over the ground. There were no medical personnel or ships in close proximity to the fighting. Instead, the ground troops had to rely on their ships for backup and/ or medical supplies.
Jason and a few of his fellow Piranha pilots flew over the blood shed and started attacking the MMO ships. Goliaths then arrived from both sides and then fire fights started breaking out. The EIC had shot down 15-20 ships for every one EIC ship that was damaged. Eventually, medical ships arrived on the scene and took all of their respective ground troops back to the hospital ships.
Wave after wave of MMO ground troops emerged over the extremely rugged and boggy terrain of Madeena 2. EIC Goliath K5 bombers flew in to bomb the MMO F.O.B (forward operating base) under the support of Goliath K4 super cruisers and 3 Bigboy cruisers. Strafing the main operations base, the K4 super cruisers destroyed all of the communication equipment as well as taking out the ammunition dump. Balls of red, blue and white light filled the battlefield with a mixed sense of emotions.
After a 2 hour phase of continuous strafing and bombing, the main outpost on Madeena 2 was closer to being in the hands of EIC. MMO vessels were no match for the EIC fighters and super cruisers.
