Lady Temperance Nelson took a few seconds to assess the situation. It was important to not panic in these situations. Several of the nobles and passengers were doing the exact opposite. There was a pileup of silver spoons at the entrance to the lower decks. She would have difficulty getting to her rooms especially in this dress. With a sigh, she found a cushioned seat and sat to wait. It was the best she could do for the moment. An opportunity would present itself to her if she was patient. Luckily she was cautious enough to have a trick or two up her sleeve.
She watched with interest as the pirates swarmed over the sides of the ship. Temperance looked over the side to the distant ground to see if jumping with her feather fall ring was worth it. It was nasty desert terrain. Hardly the place to strand yourself in a gown of many layers.
“You and I are going to have some fun my pretty,” a pirate leered at her cleavage. He put his sword away so he could use both hands. As he lunged for her she pretended to faint. All he took hold of was empty air. His scream indicated he didn’t have a magical ring to ease his descent.
There was a possibility of pretending to be a corpse with all of the blood and weapons strewn about but she dismissed it. They would likely throw any bodies overboard. She kept a sliver of an eye open. The pirates had lost a number but they were too numerous for the guards.
“Stop!” a man who appeared to be the captain yelled as only a few guards remained and none of them without injury. “If you surrender immediately I let you live. But if you fight I give you to my men for sport.”
The clang of metal against wood told her they made the wise decision.
