If all they'd done was get him to eat, or force him to eat and grow he would never have settled into life among them.
No, to ensure Lucas would stay where he was. They'd encouraged certain....behaviours. Some actions taken to make sure his attitude took the appropriate shift. That the lessons they taught him would stick. Teaching him about the joys of being spoiled. Being pampered. Easing his worries about the world as he was surrounded by layers upon layers of protections from tall unpassable fences to guards, to his loving mothers who would never let even softest of dangers come anywhere near him. Instructing him when he was too full to even think of the strength of will not to listen. More pampering. More adoring affection. More teaching and more coddling.
Much, much, much more coddling.
In their lessons they'd taught him how to act. How to treat others below him in status. How 'his' wants and 'his' needs were more important than those beneath him. How to hold his head to look down on others even when they were taller than him. At some point he'd even started to believe it.
They'd taught him that he could eat as much as he wanted and more. He didn't need to share his food anymore. He never needed to share anything ever again. Except maybe his happiness with his dozen mommys and owner who just wanted to give the world to their boy. Oh yes they did.
They'd taught him that he never needed to leave the manor. Everything he could ever want was here, and if it wasn't then it would be brought to him.
They clung to him and coddled him like non had ever been coddled before. Overreacting to even the most minor of scares with exaggerated dramatics. Wrapping him in a cocoon of their fur at the slightest jump like something was ready to pounce and tear him to pieces. All while warning him about all the dangers of the world now that he was Lucas, and still they kept coddling him.
So much in fact that they'd only went and done coddled the bravery right outta him.
....just like they wanted.
Lucky wasn't totally fearless. However when the chips came down to it he was fearless.
Lucas was a complete coward. Scared of outside. Scared of any and everyone outside the mansion.
Scared of the farm. Scared of having to share his food. Scared of being expected to do things for others. Scared of not being able to wake up whenever he wanted and do whatever he wanted. Scared of rules. Scared of chickens and horses and pigs.
Scared of any dog outside this estate.
Again, exactly as they'd planned.
Which is why that night when he heard 'another' familiar voice from his past. From Lucky's past, his response was to put his paws over his head and mutter it's all another bad dream.
For the dog that whispered his name, he suddenly realized he'd just wasted a lot of effort in being sneaky seeing the lump of spotted blubber surrounding his brother. The dalmation in the diamond studded collar was easily double Rolly's girth. No way they could get the pounderous pup into the new hole they'd had tripod dig for them. No way they could widen it and still not be caught. Even if they could, he was clearly too big to have any kind of speed behind him let alone stealth....and that was all if he'd came along willingly.
The moment he put his paws of his eyes and sent his bulk jiggling like a bowl of jelly, they knew that if they tried pushing their luck, Lucky would start barking again like last time and they might not get out like Spot, Cadpig and Rolly had. Thry'd thought if they roused him gently enough rather than surprise him they'd be fine...but....
Lucky really was gone.....for now.
This couldn't be done with a covert mission. Unless someone had a better idea, war was inevitable.
They let the spineless tub of meat with their brothers face lower his paws back down and drift back to sleep. Watching the black and white hill of his fat rise and fall in steady rhythm before they escaped back with new infor themselves.
Not looking forward to telling their parents and siblings what their son & brother was like now, and the work they'd have to do once they got him back.
