This choice: Don't - she's like your sister • Go Back...Chapter #34Bed Talk (About Families?) by: Nostrum The very thought of adding Katie to the “unit” as a solution to her infatuation with you not only feels completely wrong, but also a recipe for disaster. For one, the way she behaved, she wants you only for yourself. If suddenly you suggest she shares you with her sister and a complete stranger, she’ll feel like second pickings at best and a joke at worst.
“I don’t,” you ultimately tell Allison. “The reason she went crazy was because she wanted me only for herself.”
“I was just suggesting,” she claims in her defense. “Felt like a perfect solution.”
“I’m still trying to understand this arrangement,” Jessica tells her. “Katie’s still young – she won’t understand this with the same maturity we do.” You feel her tense as she hears Allison snicker. “Hey. What’s the big idea?”
“I think you hit the problem dead center without even realizing it. I’m not saying she has to emancipate or anything, but I think she’s tired of being seen as a little girl.”
“I’m not saying she’s a little girl anymore, but that--”
“That she’s unable to understand something as a polyamorous relationship and even accept being part of one?” You feel the sass projecting from Allison as a defensive shell full of spikes. “Listen - I also have a younger sibling. Our parents always tell us we must keep an eye on them – I suppose as a way to teach us responsibility. We can’t help but see them as inferior and unprepared.”
Is this why I’m so judgmental with Claire? you question yourself.
“We shouldn’t try to act like we’re their parents. We aren’t. Doesn’t mean we have to cover up for their major fuck-ups but try to resonate with them. Like – we shouldn’t try to be harsh for doing the same shit we did and for what our parents lashed out against. Sometimes, winking at ‘em and saying ‘hey, Mom or Dad are right in saying it’s wrong, but I won’t judge you’. Let them know you get them.”
“I don’t see how that helps.”
“Lets them know you see them as capable of thinking on their own. Sometimes, all they want to see on us is someone they can trust.”
“I know, but this is different. Kaite wanted to steal my boyfriend and leave me without anyone.”
“Jess, it’s just a crush.” Allison rubs her finger on you and grins. “I mean, you and your sister got good tastes. Dee just oozes dad vibes.”
“You think?” you ask her, as no one has ever said that of you before.
“Yeah! Like, you look and act like the kinda guy that loves silly dad jokes. The kinda guy that everyone sees as cringe, but when you get to know ‘em, they’re pretty chill.” She snaps her fingers, pointing at you. “The kind everyone knows they’re mature just from looking. Don’t really stand out in the crowd but no one believes you’ll end up rotten.”
“Except we caused a lot of trouble with Mikey and Lindsey and used you as a disguise.”
“And that’ll make you a cool dad,” Allison insists. “Best dads are the ones that did questionable stuff in their youth and learned from it. I mean, if they’re chill with their kids when they do it.”
“You think our kids will somehow find a pen like that one and start turning their friends into skins to disguise into?” Jessica asks.
“Not sure,” she claims, “but I wouldn’t put it against doing so. I mean – I don’t think you’ll throw this out at all. I’m pretty sure you’ll use it to bang Dee as the babysitter. Or bang the postal worker by letting Dee wear him. And if Dee’s seeing someone else, I bet you’ll turn into their friend so you can spy on ‘em, then play him a nasty trick.”
“That feels cruel.”
“Jess, you know what they say about scorned women. You won’t throw out that pen, trust me. One of these days, one of your kids’ll find out where it is, realize it doesn’t work for writing, play with them as a pretend gun or something and figure out what they really do. And when they do, they won’t tell a thing but I bet ya anything that they’ll use it just like you used us.”
Your girlfriend looks at you, shaken. “You think we should keep it?”
Allison slaps her and laughs. “Why wouldn’t you!? You’re gonna have the best sex of your lives – if you get bored with how you look, tell your partner you want to experiment. See – that's what happens when you stop treating sex like it’s something sacred.”
“Sex isn’t a game either.” Jessica retorts.
“I know, hence the condoms and the pills and whatnot. What I mean is, if you know what can happen with unsafe sex and prevent it, why not do it? The way I see it, being prudish is what causes all the trouble. Stir things up a bit, and I promise you’ll never get bored.”
Jessica looks at the roof, and you know that left her pondering. “So... Is that why you’re making us this offer? To, uh... be your partners?”
“Jess? You wore us and slept as us. You must’ve felt amazing fucking Dee-as-Ash, and I’m pretty sure Dee must’ve felt amazing fucking you inside me. And I find Dee cute and I bet Ash finds you attractive. We all have reasons why to try it. If it doesn’t work, I won’t push you – Girl Scout promise.”
“You were in the Girl Scouts?”
“You’d be surprised.” She steps away from the bed, rifling through her stuff until she draws a beret and a sash with various pins. “Dad insisted I take advantage of it. Was a damn good time, but once I started to feel independent, I pretty much realized Dad forced this on me.” She then draws a pocket knife – a butterfly knife, in fact – and twirls it. “Still keep my lessons fresh.”
“I thought you were saying this just because of what it meant.”
“I did, but at least I have the experience to back it up.” She stores everything and returns to you. “Anyways, as I was saying – you shouldn’t treat your sister like a kid anymore. The best thing you can do is tell her she’s grown up now, and that obsessing over your boyfriend only makes her childish. If she wants to share, fine – if she doesn’t, tell her you’re not gonna treat her nice ‘cos she’s your sis.”
“I don’t want her as my enemy, Allison. She’s my sister.”
“First of all? Drop the full name. It’s ‘Ally’, however you wanna pronounce it – with a ‘y’ or a ‘ie’. I also accept ‘girl’, ‘bitch’ and ‘babe’. Second? Nine out of ten times, she’s doing that ‘cos she thinks it’s what’s gonna make her look like an adult in front of everyone. If you treat her as an adult, you’ll make her reboot.”
“I’ve been talking to her,” Jessica insists. “As an adult, in fact.”
“You’re talking to her as a sister, not as an adult. Don’t tell her she shouldn’t be with Dee because he’s your man. Ask her what she finds interesting in him. If it’s something you find attractive, praise her. Talk to her like a friend so she can lower her defenses, then tell her what you find attractive about Dee. When she connects with you, she’ll come to her senses.”
“I don’t think that’ll work.”
“I can help. Just introduce me as your new friend, let me set things up, then you can wear me and ask her.”
“You’d... let me wear you for that?”
“Girl, I’m letting you wear me so you can fuck your man. You think I wouldn’t do it so you’d have a better relationship with your sister? That said, you’ll have to let me wear you so I can talk with Allen at least once.”
“I...” You feel her tense. “I don’t know him personally.”
“Just tell me when he’s there and I put on you. Won’t be able to smoke a joint before, so we’ll have to know each other very well. Or, since your sister knows him, how about I put her on and--”
“No,” your girlfriend demands.
“--and I set her up so that Allen shows more interest in her. That way, she won’t think about Dee. Not gonna do kisses or cuddles, though – the reason should be obvious.”
“The reason should also be obvious why I don’t want you to wear my sister.”
“She won’t know what hit her, trust me. And it’s gonna be once – just so I can tell him I still love him. I’m not sure what Dad must be telling him about me--”
“I know I told you to keep it to yourself if it’s painful,” Jessica tells Allison, standing up to make her point, “but I think holding it out is hurting you more. Is it fair to ask what happened between your Dad and you?”
You see her refuge in Ashton’s arms, and he follows by hugging her tighter. “Not exactly, but...” She takes a deep breath, wiping stray tears off her eyes. “I guess I do need to tell someone else about it. Ash knows everything, but...”
“Again, if it’s hurting you...” Jessica says nothing else, but you can sense – you can basically feel – what she wants.
She wants you to speak. She wants you to press her into telling. And you agree – opening up should help her.
But what if it doesn’t? What if it puts Ally against you? Or it simmers into something that’ll make you choose between either of you? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
