What was wrong with an amicable coffee between two adults? Glancing back at your body, evidently your father was wasting no time in enjoying himself, why should you?
"That's very kind of you, Miss...?"
"Uh, Mrs Miller. My husband passed away several years ago," she explains.
"Oh... uh... that sucks?"
She smiles. "It does - it did, I mean. For a long time. But you learn to move on. And how about you? What's your situation?" she asks, hinting at your old body. You realise she's asking about your marital status.
"I've never been married," you say honestly.
"Does he still see his mother?"
"We visit her occasionally," you say after some thought, thinking of the retirement home where your grandma has lived for some years.
The two of you walk together towards the edge of the park. She talks about her kids, about the stresses and challenges of raising children alone; you do your best to nod along but its hard to focus on anything but the sight of her mature figure in those yoga pants.
"Sometimes I worry that my son doesn't have a father in his life, y'know? Like a strong, male figure he can look up to?"
"Uh huh..."
"I suppose you don't have that problem. Does you son ever miss his mother? It's different for boys, I suppose... but we have to look out for their development, right?"
"Mm hmm..."
"Is he okay with us just leaving him like this by the way?"
"Who?"
"Your son..."
"Oh! Right. No, he'll be fine. He can find his own way back. He's... pretty mature for his age."
"You live near here then?"
"Yep."
The conversation continues over coffee, you just barely keeping up. She seems to want to know everything about your life, what you do for a living, what your hobbies are, forcing you to wrack your brains about everything you know about your dad's life. Fortunately it seems as though you can't fail to impress her. Everything you say seems to make her laugh or smile, and she keeps touching your dad's arm in a way you kinda like. Was picking up girls really this easy?
You finish your coffee. She glances round the quiet restaurant and leans closer.
