James’s whisper lingers in the air like an impending storm. You can feel the weight of his suspicion growing, and if you don’t act fast, the entire office might start speculating. You need to create a distraction—something big enough to shift the focus away from your questionable wardrobe choice.
Scanning the office, you spot an opportunity. The coffee machine is making that weird, sputtering noise again, the one that always precedes a minor explosion of foam and liquid. If you time it right, you could make it look like an accident.
With a deep breath, you push back your chair and stand. “Hey, anyone else hear that?” you announce, walking toward the breakroom with just enough urgency to grab attention.
James watches you, his brow furrowed, but a few coworkers glance up. As you near the coffee machine, you give it a subtle bump with your hip. That’s all it takes. The machine hisses violently before spewing out a geyser of steaming coffee.
“Oh, crap!” you yell, jumping back dramatically. “The machine’s going crazy again!”
Within seconds, the office springs into action. Lisa from HR rushes over with napkins, Daniel from IT mutters something about corporate not approving the new machine, and James, mercifully, is momentarily distracted by the mess.
But then you feel it—the warmth seeping through the borrowed fabric of your pants. The coffee has splashed all over you, soaking into the material in dark, unmistakable stains.
Lisa reaches you first. “Oh no, Steve, that got all over you,” she says with concern. “Come with me, I’ve got some spare clothes you can borrow.”
Before you can protest, she gently guides you toward the corner of the room, away from prying eyes. Your face burns with embarrassment, but you know refusing would only draw more attention.
She rummages through a small cabinet and pulls out a pair of folded bottoms. “These should fit,” she says, offering them to you. “I keep extra clothes here for emergencies.”
You take them hesitantly. They aren’t exactly what you would have chosen, but at this point, you don’t have many options.   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
