You woke up with a start, as if you had just been shaken awake from a dream. You don’t remember when you went to sleep. You did know one thing though. Whatever you might have been dreaming before is a lot better than the nightmarish situation you were in now.
You were trapped in a massive spider web! That wasn’t even a good explanation, you were completely tangled in spider threads! Mummified in the sticky strings, everything constricted into a horribly tight restraint. Mercifully, your head was completely free of the stuff and you weren’t suffering from vertigo so you probably weren’t upside down. Those small mercies were of little comfort though.
Frantically, you looked around as much as your restrained form allowed. The nasty thing that had done this to you was nowhere to be seen… for now. Looking at the new place you were in, you were both shocked and confused. You weren’t in a giant cave where you assumed giant spiders would live, you were in some kind of laboratory! At least that’s what you thought it was, with all of strangely advanced looking technology.
Being in a lab meant one of two things. You had been kidnapped, shrunk, left for dead by whoever owned the lab when they were done, and then taken by a spider. Or you’d been kidnapped, shrunk, and given to the owner's pet spider. Both were possibilities were similarly strange and equally terrifying. You struggled with all your might against the suffocating webs, but they hardly moved.
Through the fibers of the webs you could feel something unsettling... vibrations and movement. The once steady web was now beginning to shift in a rhythmic fashion. Your breath grew quicker as you tried to struggle more, but the webs only seemed to get tighter. The worst thing about your situation was that you couldn’t hear anything coming towards you. You only felt like you could sense it.
Unfortunately for you, your senses turned out to be right. Without a sound, the giant spider that had you trapped scurried past you. The only noise that could be heard was your ragged breathing and the web’s reaction to the spider. The spider seemed to have not noticed you, but it abruptly turned around to face you. You felt your blood drain from your face as it looked towards you. It seemed strangely cautious, as if it were checking on you.
Your breath quickened once more as it began to approach you. Too weak to struggle, all you could do was try not to scream. The spider’s legs moved in creepily perfect tandem with each other; it would be impressive if you weren’t so terrified. The spider stopped just in front of you, allowing you to gauge its size. It wasn’t as large as you thought it would be, but a spider roughly the same size as you was still a horrible sight.
It reached for you with a pair of its front legs, causing you to whimper in terror. “S-stay away!” You scream at the top of your lungs. The spider reeled back in shock, its intrusive legs retreating towards itself. It tilted its head curiously, something you didn’t know spiders could do, and seemed to roll its neck. “I-Is this even a normal spider?” You laugh to yourself in terror. Once again, the spider moved. though now it passed you and returned to wherever it had been before; above you and out of sight. You quietly thank whatever force had made the spider move along and let your head hang, exhausted from the tension you just had.
All was quiet for a while, the spider never came back and even the machines failed to make any noise. All there was was the dull glow of everything, your tired breathing, and the suffocating webs. You pondered what was going to happen. Was the spider interested in you? Was it going to eat you? Let you rot? Or was this some experiment from the lab owner? Maybe the owner was the spider! ...No that’s too ridiculous, even for your situation.
More time passed, and the same cycle of strange thoughts went through your head. You kept going through the same thoughts and scenarios over and over. Eventually, something new got your attention.
You heard the sound of compressed air and the sliding of metal. A new source of light emerged into part of the room, much brighter than the rest of the room. Startled yet captivated, you look towards the light, curious about what it was. As you thought, the new light was coming through a door that had just been opened up. But there was no one there. You could tell that it was sensor based, but there wasn’t anyone there to set it off. You strained your eyes against the light and started to see something. It was the black silhouette of a spider! “That’s what set the door off!?”
Before you could think of some crazy theory about the spider being malicious, a new figured strolled into the lab. Well, rolled into the lab would be more accurate. Out of the door frame, a figure much larger than the spider rolled into view. From the brief look you got at the figure, it looked like whatever it was skating on its shoes; like those old Heelys. Your look was only brief because the lights of the lab suddenly blared to life and blinded you! The spider hadn’t been big enough to set those off, but the new giant was.
You couldn’t rub away the pain or blurriness from your eyes, thanks to your web bindings. You could hear the giant figures approach though. It definitely sounded like those old wheel shoes and you heard what you presumed was a chair being rolled up as well. You had seen earlier that you were suspended only a little above a desk. Maybe this had been an experiment after all!
The first sound you heard from the new person was a groan, a very tired sounding one. “So, you’re awake now huh?” You could tell from the voice that the person who had come for you was a girl. Your vision was nearly finished recovering when she spoke again. “You could have chosen a better time… I was finally getting some rest.” She lamented.
Your vision finally cleared, and you got a good look at your apparent captor. To your shock it wasn’t a mature woman sitting in front of you. It was a young girl… with her arms spread across the table and head resting on her forearm. Any lingering sense of dread yo had was replaced by confusion. “Um… something the matter?” You ask the giantess.
The girl sighed tiredly. “No, just tired.”
“I can see that, but you look exhausted.”
“Well, I just went through some crazy stuff. Multiversal crossover, alternate dimensions, degeneration at the atomic level, and a few days without good sleep. Lots of stuff, I won’t bother you with details.”
“So, who are you?” You ask the obvious question. Her response was delayed by a yawn.
“I’m not answering that.”
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t know who you are yet. You could be a henchmen for some villain I know, and I can’t be giving away my identity just cause I’m tired.”
“Henchmen? Villain? I’m pretty sure you’d count as the villain here!” You accuse the girl, confused by her talking like she was a superhero. “Someone who kidnaps people, shrinks them, and tries to have their spider eat them would be the one with henchmen, not worrying about them!”
The girl changed posture, lifting her head off the table and rested her head on the back of her hands. “You think I was trying to feed you to my spider?”
“Yes! Why else would I be… webbed up like this!?”
“I already told you, I got a lot of bad people to deal with in my life. I actually found you in here, in all of my important stuff. I had no way of knowing if you’re a henchmen or some new villain for me to fight. So I had spider web you up to make sure you couldn’t try anything when you woke up.”
“But… it was going to eat me!”
“No he wasn’t, he was guarding you while I finally got some sleep.”
“There’s no way a spider is that smart.”
“He is. Now, enough questions. I’m the one that needs answers right now. Be honest, and this will be over quick.”
“Can you at least let me loose?”
“No. Who are you and what were you doing in here?” She countered, getting straight to the point.
Even though this girl looked pretty cute, she was surprisingly intense. She clearly wasn’t messing around, so you decide to come clean. You had nothing to hide, you had no idea why you were in her lab either. Plus, from what you heard her say, it sounded like she just went through a lot of weird stuff. Maybe saying you got shrunk and dropped somewhere you didn’t know wouldn’t sound too weird?
“Alright. This is going to sound crazy, but it sounds like you’ve had your share of crazy lately.” You begin. You tell the girl all about what you know about your situation. Which was very little. You spent more talking about your dreadful experience with the spider than how you wound up shrunk in her place. You wanted to give her information about how you got there, but you had nothing to give.
While you were speaking, the girl leaned sleepily into one hand, resting her chin on its palm. She tried to look like she was paying full attention, but you could occasionally see signs of her exhaustion. Whatever she went through must have been pretty tiring. She even stifled a yawn once or twice during your talk. You finish saying your piece and wait for the girl to respond.
There was a brief pause before she regained her senses and spoke to you...
