When Tom got the Universal Remote, he didn't think much about it.
Ever since he had moved into his off campus studio apartment at the beginning of the year, he would get packages of all kinds addressed to either the previous resident, a guy named John Campbell, or (and these were Tom's favorite) to "John Campbell or Current Resident." The former he returned to the post office; the latter, Tom greedily opened up.
The packages always contained neat little devices, everything from pocket sized multitools to a can opener you could hook up to your Wi-Fi.
So when Tom got a package with a universal remote, he was a little disappointed. Sure, it had a couple of extra functions he didn't recognize but, compared to some of the other things Tom had gotten, a universal remote seemed rather pedestrian in comparison.
Well, it was free, Tom reminded himself, as he set it on a table by a chair in his living room area, and promptly forgot all about it.
Tom only remembered the universal remote later on, when the batteries in his regular remoted died. It happened while Tom was watching Jimmy Kimmel interview
