Chapter #5Not exactly the SS Anne by: sneakyk Of these hiding spots, only one of them would leave you almost assuredly safe from the Vullaby and the Lycanroc...and would at least provide you with a chance of surviving getting swept out to sea. The toy boat. The fact that the toy possesses a door is of utmost importance. A human could open the door easily enough... but a Pokemon? Well. An avian predator and a quadrupedal Pokemon would certainly be hard pressed to even notice the door, much less open it.
But the toy boat comes with a risk... it's under direct sunlight, and likely will remain under sunlight for much of the day. If the plastic boat isn't heated now, it certainly will get warm as the day progresses. But being in a superheated toy boat beats getting swept into a belly full of acid, anyway. You approach the edge of the umbrella's shade, take a deep breath, then rush for the toy boat.
As you rush out from under the shade, you are met with an immediate wave of heat. It is not pleasant, but you'll just have to manage. You power forward for a few more feet before making it to the edge of the boat. You approach a shaded side of the boat and run your hand against it. At least the shaded portion of the boat is bearable. You run your hand along the plastic surface of the toy boat until your hand reaches the edge of the shade. You take a deep breath before bringing it towards the illuminated portion. Your immediately wince from the contact... hotter than a overclocked computer on a bad day. Probably not enough to injure you, but certainly hot enough for you to reconsider your approach.
You then turn your attention towards the toy boat's door. The interior is likely shaded...yes. Why didn't you think of that before? You should be able to endure it. You hop up onto the boat ,already feeling the sting of the hot plastic against your feet .You scramble for the door, grab at it and begin to tug. The door offers a surprisingly stiff degree of resistance. For a moment, you fear the door is bolted in place. But as you tug, you are able to get it to wobble and bend.
Observing the frame of the door as it wobbles and bends, you notice that a small piece of candy, one that would escape all but the highest degree of scrutiny from an ordinary person's gaze, appears to be lodged between the frame and the door. Identifying the candy as the source of the jam, you attempt to dislodge it. After several attempts, you have nothing to show but sticky fingers. Not wanting to get stuck in place against the candy, you hop off of the boat, find a nearby seashell and use the shell as a spear, shattering the part of the candy connecting it to the frame. With one final push you manage to open the door, causing the candy piece to fall off of the frame and tumble across the 'deck' of the toy boat.
Once in the 'cabin,' you shut the door and sit down. The 'cabin' of the ship, really little more than an opening in the plastic plaything's hull, provides you reasonable, cover from sunlight. You also notice what appears to be a partially eaten grape in the toy boat. The bite marks in the grape are too small to belong to an ordinary human, especially considering most humans would be able to crush something like this into a pulp with a single bite. Could another tiny person have once been in the cabin? Whatever the case, you are here now. You shut the cabin's door and sit down in the shade. Eventually, you fall asleep.
When you wake up to the sound of distant, incoherent voices, you find yourself inside of what appears to be the ship's cabin... only the space around you appears to have warped. The door into and out of the ship, previously roughly your height, is now larger than life, easy four times your height. Perhaps this is a result of a heat distortion. The air around you is intensely hot. Though the compartment itself is a dark and you are not in direct contact with sunlight, the ambient heat radiating from the toy boat must be warming up the air around it. You rise up and attempt to get to push the door open, only to find that your body now lacks the strength. All the while, the voices grow louder. The boat's interior begins to rumble.
It's only when you turn your attention to the grape and find that it is now bigger than your body do you realize what has happened. "No..." you mutter to yourself. But just saying that won't change anything. You've shrunk further . You're now probably about the size of an ant. And you're trapped inside of this boat. You may well die of heat exhaustion before even contacting a living being.
You don't have long to ponder this possibility, however, before the voices from earlier return , now crystal clear , painfully loud, and accompanied by thunderous footfalls.
"Man. It is so hot out here!"
"Well yeah. The beach can be hot. That's why you bring lots of sunscreen. But the water's great."
"Well...ok. It does look good. "
"Yeah it is. And making sandcastles is fun. And look. There's even an umbrella someone already set out for us"
"good point. Hey, we can put on sunscreen over there."
THUD. THUD. KTHUD. KTHUD. KTHOOOM. The echoing sounds of footsteps cause the boat to rock, almost as if it were on the raging seas. The unseen giants might be ordinary humans -probably just young boys judging by their voices- , but to you, they're like unfathomable gods. And these gods are heading to the umbrella... Just a few feet from where you are.
Eventually, the footfalls come to a stop...
"h There's a lot of toys here. You think we can take them?"
"MMM. Wouldn't want to get in trouble... but whoever left them here probably doesn't want them anyway."
"Heh. Maybe we could just play with them for now. Hey look. A toy boat..."
"That one doesn't look like it ha a remote control. It's probably for preschoolers.
"So what?"
The thuds suddenly return... and suddenly, you feel a surge of motion as the boat is lifted up. You gasp and plant your back the door just as one of the giants plants his face against the boat. You can see his eye gazing in, his pupil clearly focused not on you, but the grape in the compartment.
As the boy inspects the cabin, you hear his companions speaking
"Huh. There's a grape in here..." The giant muses. You feel the door begin to rattle. He's about to open it. This could be your chance to get out of the stuffy deathtrap that is the to toy boat's newly jumbo-sized cabin... but do you want to get seen?
As you ponder this, you hear the sounds of the other boys talking.
"A grape huh? Don't eat it dude. Oh. Hey can you help me put on sunscreen?"
"Sure thing, only if you help me."
"Sure."
You catch a glimpse of the boy's fingernail lodging itself into the gap between the door and the frame. It's now or never...your next decision could well be your last. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
