Michael and company were determined to see this through, even if it potentially meant their end. If there was even a chance of earning their freedom, they figured it was worth it. So began their training for the big game.
There was a large, empty field beside the crop area they could use, and there just happened to be a pair of nets in the rec shack, as well as a leather ball about the size of a cantaloupe. They had everything they needed, now they just needed to get skilled enough at the sport to win.
First they had to figure out who would play what position. Michael's son, Tyler was rather quick and agile for a human, so he was made the goalie. The rest of them were runners, with Michael as captain, since this was his idea. Sometimes the Wolfes would practice alongside them, but not always. Michael figured they must think they had this game in the bag already. Perhaps there was a way to use their overconfidence against them?
Training primarily consisted of various exercises and practicing kicking the ball, as well as running with it. When game day arrived, Michael spoke to his team. "I know you're nervous, but we can do this! This is our chance to be free of this farm, for our children to not have to live in fear of being eaten. The Wolfes think they've won already, but their arrogance will be their downfall. Robert hasn't played seriously in years, so he's no doubt rusty. Which gives us an advantage. Now, let's go!"
They walked out to the field where the Wolfe's we're waiting. "Ready?" Robert asked. Michael nodded. "Then let's play." On the Wolfe's team, Fred was the goalie, Robert was captain, Julia, James and Hanna wee Runners, While Billy kept score for both sides. John would watch from the sidelines, serving as referee.
Both teams met in the middle of the field, flipping a coin to decide who would get the ball first. The humans got first call, everyone got into position, and the game was on!
