Melona thumbed through the list of ingredients that Melissa had written up, starting from the top.
"Mandrake germ, a hundred points per ounce," she started. That one was out of the question. Mandrakes weren't native to the area, and the ones that managed to survive in the soils surrounding the Academy had to contend with the strange blend of magical contamination and the wards that were erected to keep the contamination from spreading too far. Her friend Drif had described them as "temperamental," which in Drif-speak meant "could probably kill somebody."
"Dragonroot, a hundred points per specimen." Another no-go. She didn't even know that dragonroot grew in the area. "Slime nucleus, pure, a hundred points per dram." That would require a better knowledge of slime anatomy than any other student at the school. Realizing that she should probably set her sights lower, she let her gaze wander down the list until she found something that was more feasible.
"Hellwater, pure, sixty points per dram." She nodded to herself. She'd heard Drif talking about that before. From what she could understand, the name was a misnomer; Hellwater was, as Melissa had mentioned, a kind of springwater, but didn't actually come from any infernal realm. Rather, it came from areas of high magical entropy in general. Finding a usable spring on campus shouldn't be too hard, right? After that, she'd just need to purify it somehow, and given that she had a head start on the other students, she'd have a big leg up on the competition. Maybe that's why Melissa had given her that rundown on spring water; she was suggesting it as a hint.
"Now," she said to herself. "Where on campus could I find something like that."
