Melona sat bolt upright. That last thought didn't sound like her internal monologue. It sounded like a different woman's voice entirely, deeper and more melodious than Melona's own. What was more, it almost sounded real, as though whoever had just spoken was standing in Melona's dorm. Melona stood up from the bed, looking around the room. Nobody was there. She waved an arm experimentally, her anxiety having already proposed three separate scenarios involving an invisible voyeur sneaking into her room.
The voice in her head laughed.
Oh dear. Nervous already? it asked. I suppose that's my fault.
"Who--who are you?" asked Melona.
Somebody who knows a few things about miracles, said the voice. It sounded pleased with itself. And somebody who doesn't mind making a few herself.
Melona tried to steady her breathing. "And you decided to give one of them to me?"
"Give" is a bit of a strong word. Melona still couldn't see the voice's source, but its wide, self-satisfied grin was plain as day in her mind's eye. I'll need you to do a thing or two for me.
There it was. Melona didn't have much experience dealing with spiritual entities, but she knew enough to understand that they always had an agenda of their own. Truth be told, it would have been far more suspicious if the voice had just given her something. She knew she shouldn't trust this voice. She also knew that she should hear it out.
