"You're late, human. Do you know what this means?"
Melona blinked. Normally, being late for class at the Academy meant getting used for a demonstration of that day's lesson. She'd been subjected to, or at least saw other students subjected to, such punishments in basically every class she'd been in, save for two. There was Magical History, which didn't really need demonstrations, and there was Illusions, which included a number of demonstrations but tended to not need an individual test subject. Normally being late for either class involved a penalty for that day's participation grade, but that went without mentioning.
Melona swallowed. "Is today a demonstration day?"
Professor Soffpoz gave Melona a slow, condescending nod while speaking in a matching tone. "Yes, human. Now come up and stand by the desk."
Melona did as she was told, her mind still racing as to what Soffpoz could possibly need a demonstration subject for. She watched as the professor came over to stand in front of the desk.
"Impulsive. Foolish. Thick-witted," she began. "These are but a few words that describe those who neglect the school of illusion magic. They believe that there is no power in artistry, nothing worth pursuing in the realms of trickery. After all, why cast an illusion when you could charm your way into getting what you want?" In the back row, a student who was clearly only pretending to pay attention nodded. Soffpoz briefly vanished, revealing her feline form on that student's desk. She hissed as the student recoiled, then the image of her human avatar reappeared at the front of the room. "As I have said time and time again, if you make such a moronic error in this class, you will not be leaving with a good grade." She sighed. "But, today is different. Today, I want to show you all how proper use of illusion magic can take the less subtle schools of magic and elevate them beyond their typical limits. For this, I have brought in a guest lecturer to help me demonstrate--"
