This choice: You go to an ice cream shop • Go Back...Chapter #6Your meet-cute leads to a routine of normalcy by: Jenny Amara “It all started here,” Kyle said.
“What did?”
“Your in-laws, they met here for the first time.”
“Weird, I don’t remember that.”
“It’s how Richard remembers it. Apparently he was here with some friends and you walked in.”
“I guess I can remember coming here before, but I don’t recall seeing you.”
“How about I ask you directly then. Where did you meet Richard, errr, me, for the first time?”
“At school, I noticed you had… well we covered that already.”
“One track mind on this lady,” Kyle said making a silly face. The sight of this mad you chuckle some.
“There, that’s it. You did that while we were here. I bumped into you and made a joke, you turned and chuckled at me before you went off with your ice cream. Do you remember that?” Kyle asked.
“I remember you doing that to me plenty of times. Maybe Charlotte doesn’t have as strong of a connection to this time that you do?”
“Yeah, I guess not. I thought it was our meet-cute”
“Our meet-cute?”
“Yeah, you know like in the movies when a couple bump into each other and then suddenly realize that they were meant for each other.”
“Oh, wow. Richard felt that strongly about it?”
“Yeah, he did. Does. It’s confusing.”
“Yeah, I get that,” you said as you paused for a moment. A thought popped into your mind though, “You brought me to where you thought our relationship started. Kind of sappy for you Kyle.”
Kyle stood there scratching his head to feign off his action. “I just responded honestly to your question. You’re the one who asked me to take you somewhere significant to us”
“Yeah, I just didn’t realize that it would resonate so much with you. You almost look like you’ve caught feelings for me for real”
“I can’t help it if it kind of feels that way you know. Clearly I’m not fully in control of my facilities here. It feels like I’m rewarded when I follow along with what ‘Richard’ wants.”
“Yeah, I experienced that too. Strange feeling right?”
“Yeah, kind of like being praised by a parent but better. Also, instant gratification. It could be fairly addictive if we aren’t careful”
“That’s a good point. We should watch out for each other so we don’t end up losing ourselves.”
“Alright, let’s make a promise then. If the other is acting too much like their body’s original self then we will call them out.”
“Sure, promise!”
“Alright, well what do we do next?”
“I guess you get to ask me a question then we visit that place.”
*****
For days, the two of you unraveled details about your alternate lives by asking pointed questions. Visiting those places really helped you to ground the feelings and help to incorporate them so you could be functional members of society. Kyle worked out the dynamics of his job and you worked out how you would care for things at home. Each new memory seemed to make the next step that much easier and before you knew it two weeks had gone by.
Kyle was now regularly attending his job, you were cooking and cleaning around the house while also researching on raising a child. You knew the mechanics of how to get a child after all. Being a mother for the long haul however was not something you had prepared for. So you figured it best if you actually made an effort towards learning about it.
Kyle surprised you one night by bringing you home some flowers. When you asked him why he did that he said he just wanted you to know that he appreciated what you were doing around the house for him. This little act of kindness surprised you. Firstly, that Kyle would go out of his way to make the gesture. Secondly, because it had you feeling things for him. Things that you weren’t sure you were comfortable with feeling.

“You know, it’s been weeks since we experienced a time leap. Why do you think that is?” You asked Kyle one evening over dinner.
“I don’t know. Maybe we are supposed to go through this?”
“Pretty mundane things to go through, don’t you think?”
“I suppose so, nothing crazy like what we experienced those first few hours and days. It’s a lot easier now, I’ve got my routine and I’m sticking to it!” Kyle happily announced.
“That’s a donation to the ‘Lose yourself’ jar mister.”
“What? Why?”
“Too chipper. You aren’t really excited to have a routine, that’s Richard talking”
“Ugh, fine,” Kyle wandered over to the jar and placed a bill inside. “You know most of these are from me right? Whenever I say anything about you acting like a girl you always argue with me”
“That’s because I have to fit in with society. I’m not allowed to go transition back to being a man after all.”
“I guess that’s fair, but you should be careful. Those required things might be causing you to lose yourself more than you think”
Kyle had a valid point. You were finding it easier and easier to embrace the aspects of femininity that came with the territory. Most visible of which being the amount of time you dedicated each morning to getting ready. You had become quite deft at applying makeup and styling your hair. Of course, you styled it just like Charlotte did and wrote this off as blending in to society.
Again, out of character, Kyle went and turned on some music while you were continuing with dinner. “Why did you turn that on?”
“Seemed like a good idea. Wanted to mix things up a bit.”
“I guess that’s fair,” you said as you felt something come over you. Your body swayed to the sound of the music and you felt yourself become lost in the melody. Before you knew what you were doing you were standing up moving to the music. The song was a slow one and you found yourself moving in ways that were simultaneously familiar and not. There was a lot of hip movement that you found comfortable but foreign. To put it frankly, you were dancing like a woman, and you had no clue how you were doing so. Kyle was soon dancing there next to you as well. You both were clearly swept up by something, but you couldn’t bring yourself to stop it. Instead, you just leaned in and were dancing in Kyle’s arms. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
