"Football team paves the way to our school's 15th bowl game...no, too generic. How about... Tom Cruise. is that you? Quarterback prodigy Aaron Holt leads the Bobcats to their 15th College Bowl. Meh, we'll go with it." Danielle leans back in her creaky desk chair after spitballing with herself, the title for this week's New Times Gazette, Upton College's newspaper, still up for debate. She reaches for her can of black cherry vanilla Bang but finds it empty; with a groan, she stands up and stretches, yawning all the while. From an early age, people had remarked that she's a bit taller than average. Lanky would be a better, albeit impolite term to describe the woman. Cici, her roomie, likens her to the Jolly Green Giant, everyone's favorite vegetable mascot.
So far, the school year has been business as usual, class goes on and her job pay only ever stays the same. She's been tasked with writing a story using her own narratives that really captivates readers. College kids are usually into sports, so Danielle reasons that football is the safest bet; unfortunately for Danielle, every other so-called journalist has the same idea. This poses a pretty decent problem, she's hardly the oldest journalist still sticking around, with several of her seniors having a good five years in the game. And on top of that, sports aren't exactly her favorite past time, so the passion won't be there. Whatever she does, it has to be novel, standing out against all the other submissions to her professor.
"Uuuuuuugh, stupid jocks and their stupid fans. Why can't I write about just anything?" Danielle paces between her desk and the kitchenette, her fuzzy socks accumulating quite the static charge. Like bagels out of the toaster, an idea springs to mind. This may very well be the biggest flop the paper has printed, but reporters didn't get to where they are today without taking risks. "After all, why not, why shouldn't I write about anything..." She trails off. "What the hell should it be about?" She cracks open a fresh Bang from the fridge, this one a rainbow unicorn, gulping that sweet sweet caffeine that's powered many a student through sleepless nights of projects and cramming. Danielle hops back into her seat causing it to spin a full 360 degrees before grabbing the desk and opening up a new tab on the computer.
The problem with variety is that there's as many topics as there are people, picking one everybody's interested in is next to impossible. Now if said topic could attract attention, hook its readers into wanting more, like an infection that takes over their mind, why, she'd be the architect behind the next national sensation! Danielle gets to work scanning social media sites for interesting digs, hot topics on TikTok and X with #trending don't really grab her attention. An hour later and still no joy until one post catches her eyes. "Foot Fiend? Huh." She's known people with a foot fetish before, more common than one may think, but nobody ever mentioned a foot fiend. Hovering the cursor over the link, she checks the URL before clicking, her screen displays a very dated forum page discussing everything about foot fiends. The more she reads, the more she thinks it's just a circle of fetishists and writers collaborating to spoof up the next big hoax. Then again, maybe a break from reality would do everyone some good. She continues reading comments in the thread.

"Whoa, you people need to chill with the obvious trolling." She reads more replies and many claim to be about friends and family, all female, acting weird with their feet. A video with transformative properties turning women into hairy monsters infatuated with feet sounds dumb as can be. Nobody in their right mind would really believe in that, it's impossible. Yet as with any good investigative journalist, Danielle needs to verify the source of these nonsensical claims to see if it really does warrant suspension of disbelief. Her curiosity piqued, she almost clicks on the link, but something stops her finger. Call it an internal alarm going off, but Danielle can't believe she's actually scared of watching a random video.
"Oh come on, I'm on the dark web already, might as well go all the way and check out this 'magic video'." Talk all she may, Danielle's finger still betrays her, does she truly no want to watch the video? Set aside for later reference sits a notebook full of details and essential points about foot fiends. She'd taken extensive notes about just what exactly a fiend is, and they were certainly detailed for a fictional creature. She reads aloud. "Infectious and terrifying in its own right, a foot fiend is not inherently evil, just looking for a good time with another woman's feet." Danielle thinks back to when she last met someone with a foot fetish, he wasn't nearly as open or rough about it. If the creatures are real and lose control, no woman would be safe. They supposedly can sniff out a pair of feet miles away, and just the sight of a woman's bare foot can trigger the transformation. Being smothered by big stinky feet isn't Danielle's idea of a good time, nor is losing herself to a craze of sex and soles.
With pursed lips and a trembling finger, Danielle has a decision to make: will she take the risk and watch the video, or perhaps phone someone who may know more? She weighs the options, one is likely to be largely harmless and, if nothing else, am entertaining couple minutes. The other option could also prove useful in getting some scoops from an outside perspective. There's a teacher's assistant in her chemistry class named Kaitlyn who gets around, she's bound to know someone who has watched the video; come to think of it, she'd caught the assistant staring at her feet one day as class was dismissed but though nothing of it. Now though, Kaitlyn might just be the lead she's looking for, especially if she's already watched the video...
