"What is going on here?" Sophia gasped and looked up as her teacher approached. She tried closing her hand on Derek and hiding her under her desk, but Mrs. Grover had seen everything. "Sophia, bring him out right this instant," the woman demanded. Sheepishly, Sophia obliged. She laid Derek onto her desk. "What is the meaning of this? Have you no respect? Do you understand just how much trouble you're in, young lady?" Mrs. Grover fired. Sophia quivered under the intense weight of her questions. "I-uh-I... I don't know, Mrs. G. I'm sorry..." her voice trailed off. Fuming, Maria let out a pensive sigh. "Are you all right, Mr. Bates?" Derek wiped himself off, still covered in Sophia's saliva, and nodded his head. "I'm fine. How much time left of class do we have? I should be able to get back on track."
"Twenty- five minutes," Maria answered. "Are you sure you're up for it? I do not mind reconvening with the whole class and having you at your desk for group questions." Derek shrugged. "I suppose that works. Shall we?" The head teacher picked Derek up and brought him over to his desk before heading back to Sophia. She spoke severely to the misbehaving student. "Since we do not quite have the faculty for after school detention, you will be spending an hour a day for the remainder of the week in detention while school hours are on. After today, you'll begin the hour prior to classes beginning. In the meantime, you are to immediately go to the office after class and give them a note that I will write up at the end of class. I hope you'll understand then what you've done." The teacher then walked away from Sophia, who turned to look at Derek. Derek noticed her gaze and peered over. A look of disgust and blame resonated from the middle schooler's blue eyes. She mouthed something to him before turning to the front of the class, where Mrs. Grover was getting the class back on track.
For the remainder of class, Derek had it easy. He answered only two questions, as the class was not very interactive. This didn't bother him though. Considering what had just transpired, a feeble class effort was welcomed. This gave Derek time to recuperate and try and prepare for the following class, where he would try and be firmer than he was this time. However, Derek was unprepared for what happened as the students were packing up. Sophia quickly approached the little assistant and snatched him up. She covered him in her hand and held him close to her chest, whispering as she then walked over to Mrs. Grover's desk. "You got me into this mess, so you're coming with." With no further direction, Sophia stuffed Derek into her backpack. Derek couldn't respond, he was in total shock as he soon found himself pinned between notebooks in a dark and stuffy backpack. He vaguely heard Sophia speak with Mrs. Grover before she started trotting out of the classroom to go serve her first in-school detention. "What a gremlin," Derek thought. "I thought this job was going to be relatively easy. I forgot just how much of a pain kids can be sometimes." He stayed still as the girl's bag shook along her walk. A few items spilled against him while the backpack moved. Eventually, this movement ceased with a large thud. Sophia set her backpack down in the detention room. She opened it up and looked inside, giving Derek a sneer when she spotted him.
