Chapter #6

Holy 221B Baker Street, Batman

by: Sly F Author IconMail Icon
It was the year of our Lord 1966. I'd been enjoying the mild summer weather in London, but Holmes' foul mood was putting me on edge.

I answered the knock on the door and was surprised at the sight of Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder, standing there.

"Good afternoon," said Batman. "May we come in?"

He spoke in a slow, steady baritone, each word deliberate.

"Of course," said Holmes, having risen to a more dignified posture on the settee. "Mrs. Hudson should be by with the tea any second now. Would you care to join us?"

"Robin and I would be delighted."

Batman was seated beside Holmes and the Boy Wonder beside me. Mrs. Hudson, for her part, seemed only slightly perturbed by the presence of two men in tights and capes on her property.

Holmes had received visitors clad in disguise before, but usually it was only a few seconds before he advised them to remove their disguise since he had already seen through it. He made no such effort to reveal the true identities of our visitors today, and I suspected it was out of respect for the work they'd accomplished in their campaign against crime in Gotham City.

"Delicious," said Batman, after taking a long sip from his teacup. "A unique, most invigorating blend. Mr. Holmes, it is a great honor to meet you. I've studied your methods ever since I was a little boy. Not to sound like a braggart, but I think I've managed to put them to fairly good use."

"You're much too modest, my dear Caped Crusader," said Holmes. "I assure you that the honor is all mine."

Robin suddenly struck the palm of his hand with a clenched fist.

"Oh, gee, Batman!" he said. "I don't think we need to waste Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson's time. We can catch that freewheeling fugitive ourselves!"

"It would be a very foolish crime fighter, Robin, who would be too proud to welcome collaboration with his colleagues," said Batman. "We would be remiss to pass through London without at least asking whether Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson would be gracious enough to join our search."

"And for what is the Dynamic Duo searching?" queried Holmes.

"Not what but whom," said Batman. "A criminal mastermind, notorious throughout Gotham City, who is currently running amok in Europe."
