Inspector Lestrade

Then came the knock on the door that would start us on one of the most bizarre cases I have ever been a witness to.

"Ahh, that would be friend Lestrade," said Holmes, eagerly sitting up. "Do come in, dear Inspector."

The door opened and in walked the familiar form of the Scotland Yard man, lean and lanky, with the gaunt face and shiny, eager eyes of a ferret.

"Don't tell me you can see through walls now," said Lestrade.

Holmes chuckled.

"You insult me, thinking after all these years I wouldn't be able to recognize your distinctive knock."

Lestrade and I exchanged terse greetings, and then he turned to Holmes.

"I've a fresh case this morning. I doubt it will take Scotland Yard long to sort it all out. Still, it has all the unusual features of the kind of cases you so love to stick your nose in and the doctor so loves to write about, so I thought I'd throw you a scrap."

"Very thoughtful of you, old friend," Holmes replied sardonically. "I suspect Mrs. Hudson will be in any second now with the tea tray. Care to join us?"

"I suppose there's time enough for a quick cup," said Lestrade, already taking his usual seat at our breakfast table.

Holmes waited patiently for our landlady to deliver the tea, though I could tell he was most eager to hear what Lestrade had to say. The Scotland Yard detective had admittedly been the one to place several of Holmes' most interesting cases right in our laps.

When we were all seated comfortable at the table with our steaming cups of tea, Holmes focused his intense gaze on Lestrade.

"Perhaps as we enjoy our tea you can summarize the situation as you understand it so far. What is the crime?"
