Walking into the building, Ash and Hazel saw nothing but darkness beyond the rocky field in front of them.
"So, you're here." The lights turned on to reveal a man with brown spiky hair and eyes that, from a distance, appeared closed. The only thing he was wearing was pair of blue jeans and black shoes, his bare chest and muscles completely exposed as if he were proud of them.
"My name's Ash Ketchum, and I'm here to challenge you!"
He man seemed completely unfazed. "I'm Brock, Pewter City's Gym Leader. Tell me, how many badges do you have?"
"Huh? Well, I don't have any. This is my first Gym."
"Fine. The Battle will be a 2-on-2." He looked at Hazel for a moment, almost judging her role. "Are you here to Battle me?"
"What? No! I'm just here for moral support!"
"Then I'll please ask you to watch from up there." He pointed to what could only be considered a viewing area for visitors.
She didn't argue and ran for the stairs that weren't far from where they were standing.
"I should warn you, I expect the absolute best from everyone. Me, my Pokémon, and my opponent. Without the willpower to win, you've already lost."
"That's fine by me! Butterfree, I choose you!"
As the winged Pokémon came out, Brock released what could only be described as a floating rock with arms and a face.
"I hope your next choice is better suited. Geodude, Tackle."
Butterfree managed to dodge out of the way, but still got grazed on its underbelly.
"String shot!"
Spitting a white, sticky thread, Geodude became entangled. While that didn't slow it down due to not having legs, its arms were now wrapped up tight.
"Now, Comfusion!"
"Tackle again!"
Before anyone could notice what happened, Butterfree was on the ground struggling to breathe.
"Clever trick. But Geodude isn't that eay to beat."
Ash returned the Bug Type to its ball, staring at it worryingly.
"Your Pokémon will be safe, so long as you don't bring it out again. Now, bring out your second choice."
Pikachu ran onto the field without hesitation. This wasn't what he had in mind, but he hoped he could continue without Butterfree.
"Disapointing. Geodude, keep using Tackle until it's down."
Without needing to be told, Pikachu avoided the attack with incredible ease, causing the Rock Type to slam into the ground.
Turning back towards the mouse, it slammed into the rock behind him. But Pikachu only had to move his head.
Brock watched as his Pokémon kept slamming into things, sometimes nearly hitting his opponent and sometimes missing outright. That's when he realised what was going on.
"Clever. You used String Shot to limit its movements, then Confusion so it wouldn't be able to aim itself properly. I underestimated you."
As he said that, Geodude hit the ground one last time before simply staying where it hit. Everyone watching knew it was unconscious.
"Geodude, return." He pulled out his second Poké Ball. "Good thing I took out your Butterfree when I did. That tactic would've crippled me. Go Onix!"
A massive rock snake revealed itself, towering over Pikachu.
Hazel watched on, not sure if Ash had a backup plan. Sadly, he didn't.
Even if I can't use Betterfree, Onix's energy resistance should be far less that its physical resistance. "Pikachu, Thunderbolt!"
The electricity coursed straight into the snake, but it didn't even flinch.
"Rock Tomb."
Pikachu ran in circles, hoping to avoid the attack, but one rock managed to hit him square it the chest.
Ash looked at his opponent, trying to think of a way to slow it down. Electric attacks clearly do nothing, but if I could blind it in one eye, Pikachu would be able to stay on the blind side to-
He stopped, noticing the sprinkler system on the ceiling and remembering what Hazel told him in Viridian City.
"Pikachu! Thunderbolt the ceiling!"
Too injured to question, he did as he was told and set off the sprinklers.
Brock stared at Ash, wondering what exactly he was up to.
After giving the water time to soak Onix, Ash ordered one last attack.
Brock wasn't afraid. Ground Types were immune to electric attacks. Making what happened next all the scarier for him.
As the electricity hit Onix, it was drawn to the watery coat around it and completely bypassed its natural immunity. Onix roared in pain due to the surge entering its nervous system directly and causing it to collapse.
Before Ash could celebrate, he noticed the snake was still conscious. It was simply lying there, unable to move.
Brock realised this as well, but knew he was just delaying the inevitable. "Onix, return."
"Hey, what're you doing?! You can't quit!"
"I'm not. My Onix can't fight in the condition it's in. My only hope for victory would be to hope your Pikchu wears itself out before Onix succumbs to the pain. Which seemed unlikely." With a smile, he held out his hand, the sign of victory resting in his palm.
"Congratulations. You've earned the Boulder Badge."
