The clock on the counter reads 2:53 a.m. Only seven minutes until you can lock up and get out of here. The streets outside are empty, rain still clinging to the pavement under the neon lights.

The GeneFlex tube sits next to the register, untouched since it rolled into your life earlier tonight. SAFE. UNSAFE. Two settings scratched into the cap, one of them sounding like a bad idea — which only makes it harder to ignore.

You’ve never used either. You don’t know what SAFE feels like, let alone UNSAFE. But the curiosity is eating at you, and the thought of taking the mild option first feels… boring.

You flip the lock on the front door, kill the “OPEN” sign, and walk to the back to check the cameras. All clear. No deliveries. No customers. Just you.

Back at the counter, you pop the cap on the tube and pull out the UNSAFE pen. It’s heavier than it looks, the metal body slightly warm in your hand. You roll up your pant leg, press it to the side of your thigh, and click.

The sting is sharp, gone in a second — replaced by a spreading heat that’s nothing like a chill from the air or a blush in your face. It’s deeper, winding its way up your leg, into your gut, across your chest.

You set the pen down on the counter, flexing your fingers. They feel strange. Not bigger, but more… present, like they’re ready to grip and hold. Your heartbeat has a new weight to it, each thump carrying more force than the last.

You glance at the dark window. Same outline. Same shirt. But something inside feels switched on, like your body’s waiting for a signal to start whatever’s coming next.

The heat doesn’t fade. It settles in, coiling under your skin, making you stand a little taller without meaning to. You have no idea if this is normal for GeneFlex — but you didn’t pick normal tonight.

You have the following choices:

1. Head to the staff bathroom to check the mirror for any changes.

2. Start moving some heavy boxes from the stockroom to see if you feel stronger.

3. Sit back at the counter and focus on every sensation, seeing if anything shifts

4. Pull out your phone and message Levi about what you just did.

5. Step outside into the cool night air and take a walk around the block, testing h

indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
