This is lovely! I teared up for real! The only thing is I wish you had given us more of what this chapter is about, I want to know about the Dad and the background check and the two of them independently. I don't see anything the grammar or spelling police would haul you in for, it's very well written. As is, stand alone, it was a beautiful vignette of a moment that moved me very much.
