Quiet Awakening

The ride into work this morning

Early morning ride
Just after sunrise
beside the canal.
All is quiet this early in the day

Swirling steam
dances just above the water
with a gentle breeze
like mini tornados

A fish breaks the surface
sending endless ripples
going, coming; coming, going
on and on, it seems.

A pair of mallards
slowly skim across the glassy surface
His mate bobs on his gentle wake
as they cut through the water together

The geese in the park
Some gently feeding
still more are sleeping
Nature awakening before my eyes.

Makes me appreciate spring -
the cool nights
and warmer days
Promises of summer coming.
