Story to include a foreign word or phrase.

สุขสันต์วันเกิด

"Soook saahn wan gad"

"Closer," I praised, "you're nearly there, it's 'souk', like the market, and san as in sanitary, mashed together to make one word. And, don't forget, ged rhymes with head."

"So, sook-san wan ged?"

"OK, เยี่ยมมาก ไม่ยากเกินไปใช่ไหม?"

"OK then," she drawled, her confusion evident, "did you just, umm, ask me to go to Chiang Mai?"

"No," I giggled, "though we could, it is your special day after all... that," I continued when she didn't say anything, "was 'good job, not so hard, is it?'"

"I guess not," she smiled, "so, happy birthday to me?"

"Indeed, สุขสันต์วันเกิด kitten."


Note: "เยี่ยมมาก ไม่ยากเกินไปใช่ไหม?" (yeah-am mach, mai yak-gun chai mai — or something like that!) — phonetically not dissimilar to "Chiang Mai" — Translates as "Very good, that wasn't too hard now was it?"
