"They're sure?" I didn't have to explain, he knew what I was really asking.

"Sir, yes Sir!" the marine major replied. "As sure as they can be from the sig-int, if—"

I cut him off with a wave. It was an old argument that we didn't have time to rehash. "Best estimates?"

"They'll take losses, but a few days, a week at the outside. Unless we—"

I sighed. "They'll go nuclear — we can't stop—"

"No sir," he interrupted, "the SNIE is clear, they don't have that capacity."

An agent moved.

Too late.

Blinding light and heat flooded the oval office.
