The difference one little object can have

That little dragon upon the mantle,
You said it meant new beginnings,
All we got was more pain in a new place.

Now the new beginning really takes place,
New home, new family, no pain
Now I'm in high school
My dreams slowly becoming reality.

You said four years ago that we would have a new beginning,
Now you're gone; it's been a year
And sad to say, my new beginning's here
I hoped to have you here
Even when I hated you for all the pain.
I thought you'd give up the booze, when that guy came along
I guess I was naive and wrong.

You've been too long gone
For me to say I'm sorry and move on
Now's my chance
I can have a life that I don't need to hide
No briuses, no scars
