If Moses wrote or compiled the Pentatuch he probably, did it during Israel's wanderings in the desert. we will get into this more later when we discuss the various theories regarding the exact date of the exoddus. Some scholars suggest that the Pentatuch was mor likely written during the Babylonian exile around 550 BCE |

| In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth. In the beginning, the earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the surface of the deep, and god hovered over the waters. And God said Let light exist, and there was light, and God saw that the light was good. And he separated the light from the darkness, and there was evening, and there was morning the first day. And God said Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water. So he made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. He called the expanse sky. There was evening, and there was morning the second day. And God said Let the water under the expanse be gathered in to one place. And let dry ground appear, it was so, and the ground he called land, and the water he called sea. Then God said let the land produce vegetation seed bearing plants and trees that bear fruit with seeds in it according to their various kinds. And it was so the land produces vegetation, plants that bore seeds and trees that bore fruit with seeds in them. And God saw that it was good and was evening and there was morning, the third day. And God said let there be light s in the expanse of the Sky to separate the Day from the Night. And let them serve as signs to mark the seasons and says and years. Let them be lights in the expanse of the Sky to illuminate the earth. God made two great lights the greater one to govern the Day and the lesser one to govern the Night.he also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the Sky to govern the Day and the Night and to separate Light from Darkness. And God saw that it was good and there was Evening and there was Morning the fourth Day And God said let the water teen with living creatures and let birds fly above the earth and across the expanse of the Sky and so God created every living and moving things with which the water teems according to their kind and every bird according to it's kind. And God saw that it was good. And he blessed them and said "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the waters of the seas and let the birds increase in number. And there was Evening and there was Morning the fifth Day. Then God said let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds. Livestock, creatures that move along the ground and wild creatures according to their kind. And it was so God made live stock according to their kinds, wild animals according to their kinds and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said let us make Man in our imageand let them rule over the creatures of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the livestock and all the earth.and over all the creatures that move along the ground. God created Man in his own image In the image of he created him Male and Female he created them. God blessed them and said "Be fruitful and increase in number fill the earth and sudue it. Rule over the Fish of the Sea the Birds of the air and every creature that moves on the ground." And God said bearing plant and every tree that bears fruit with seeds in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth all the birds of the air all the creatures that move on ground I give every green plant for food. And there was Evening and there was morning the Sixth Day This the heavens were made in all their vast array. By the Seventh Day God had finish the work he had been doing. So on the Seventh Day he rested. And made it holy because on it he rested from all the work of creating he had done |
| In contrast to the biblical narrative, ancient Creation stories from Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Syria-Palestine do more than try to explain how the physical world came into being. Creation Myths often elevated a specific god from a particular shrine to supremacy over all other gods to increase the prestige of that god or that shrine, or the city where that shrine was located. For example, Egyptian Creation myths assert that a primordial mound that arose out of a primeval sea was the site from which a specific god created the world. Several shrines claimed to be the spot from which the world was created, and that the god of the particular shrine was the creator. At Memphis, it was Psah; at Hermopolis, it was Thoth; at Heliopolis, it was Re-Atum. In Heliopolis, there is a statue that supposedly marks the very spot where Re-Atum alighted in the form of a Bennu Bird to begin the creation process. Common motifs in Creation Myths include a spontaneous generation of gods, sexual reproduction among gods, and the deification of nature—for example, the sun and moon. A creation myth often focuses on the unique geographical features of the location of a particular shrine. Sometimes creation myths relate battles between the gods and monsters that inhabit a primordial watery chaos. And through the battle, one or more gods rise to supremacy. Sometimes, creation occurs when a god defeats a primordial monster and divides its body into two; the two parts become the heavens and the earth. Or earth and sea and so on. The Babylonian creation myth Enuma Elish describes the defeat of Tiamat, the mother goddess and sea monster, by the god Marduk after a terrible battle. Marduk divides her body in half like a fish for dryingand uses it to form the heavenly dome. This victory supposedly establishes Marduk's supremacy over the other gods. Greek Creation Myths are similar. After initial chaos, Gaia, the earth goddess, and Uranus, the sky, emerge a series of monster gods such as Cronos and Typhon, and the Titans are born to them, but Zeus, the son of Cronos, defeats these beings and establishes the world order. People in Creation Myths are typically portrayed as drudges or slaves who exist primarily to do the gods' dirty work or feed the gods with sacrifices. The Genesis narrative challenges the claims of the other creation myths. establishing God's sovereignty by stating that the heavenly bodies and sea creatures were his creations, and by presenting people as God's stewards and image bearers, instead an afterthought born of divine need or laziness. The Sun and Moon are referred to as the great light and the small light. Why? By describing them like this, the bible reduces them to the status of physical objects that only rule in the sense that they emit light and mark the calendar. In contrast, in many ancient languages, the very for sun or moon also refers to the corresponding god or goddess. For instance, in Hebrew word for sun is shemesh, Shamesh is the name of the Mesopotamian sun god, and selene, the Greek word for moon, is also the name of a moon goddess. Similarly, the ancients regarded the stars and constellations as divine beings. in contrast, the bible's statement that God made the stars, demotes these bodies to created objects. Genesis rejects the deification of nature, which is the central premise of pagan religion. interestingly, it does not try to lift Yahweh to supremacy over other gods. In the seven-day creation account, Yahweh is not even named; they are simply referred to as God. Even Genesis VV 2-3 provides no sense that Yahweh needed to establish his supremacy over other gods. there is no mention of a battle between gods and monsters, nor is there a mention of a specific place or shrine at which the creation occurred. there is also no mention of a particular object that was used in the act of creation. The God of Genesis 1 is truly universal. |
| Genesis 2: The name Eden has two possible origins, one is the Sumerian word eden which translates to steppe or open field or the same word in semitic which means luxury or delight . In the bible Eden refers not only to the garden in which the first human lived but the metaphorical Garden of God. Edens exact location remains a mystery Genesis 2:8 states that God planted the garden in the east in Eden which indicates that the garden was easy of Canaan in addition the Bible associates four rivers with Eden. The Pishon, the Gihon, the Tigris, and the Euphrates. The Tigris and Euphrates are most likely the Mesopotamian rivers that still bear those names. The Gihon whose name possibly comes from the Hebrew word meaning to gush. And the Pishon whose name probably comes from the semitic word meaning to spring up are more difficult to place. A spring named Gihon waters Jerusalem but this location does not match the description of it flowing through the land of Cush. Many scholars believe that the Gihon is the Nile since Cush is sometimes associated with Nubia south of Egypt, but if this is true it becomes impossible to make sense of Edens location because the Nile never converges with the Tigris and Euphrates. Others identify Cush as the land of Kassites east of the Tigris, also refered to as Kush this theory makes better geographical sense, still other posit that the Pishon and the Gihon are tributaries of the Tigris and Euphrates. Another challenge is determining the relationship between the four rivers and the single river that flowed through Eden. Most scholars believe they are down stream from Eden which implies that all four rivers have a common source which places Eden in either northern Mesopotamia or Armenia. However, this theory poses a problem since the Tigris and Euphrates do not share a common source. The suggestion that the rivers were upstream of Eden makes sense because these two river converge in southern Mesopotamia before emptying into the Persian Gulf. The two most likely locations are northern Mesopotamia, Armenian mountains, or southern Mesopotamia |
| By the seventh day God had finished his work so on that he rested from all his labors. And God blessed that day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the creating he had done Adam and Eve This is the story of the heavens and earth when they were created. When God made the earth and the heavens, and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth. And no plant had yet sprung up. For God had not sent rain over the earth and there was no man to work the field. But streams came up from the earth and watered the surface of the ground. God formed a man from the dust of the earth. God exhaled the breath of life in to his nostrils and the man came alive. Now God planted a garden in the east in Eden, and there he put the man he had made. God made all kinds of trees grow up from the ground. These trees were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the center of the garden were the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge. The river that watered the garden flowed from there and formed the head waters of four rivers. The Pishon, which flowed through Havila, the Gihon which flows through the land of Cush, the third river is the Tigris which runs along the eastern edge of Asshur and the fourth river is the Euphrates. God put the man in the garden to work and look after it. God commanded the man "You are allowed to eat of any tree in the garden. But you must not touch the Tree of Knowledge. For if you eat of it you will surely die." Now God said "it is not good for him to be alone, I need to make a suitable helper for him." Now God formed from the earth all the various beasts of the field of the birds of the air and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. What ever he called them that became their name. But no suitable helper was for Adam. So God put Adam in to a deep sleep. He removed one of the mans ribs and filled the empty place with flesh. God formed a woman from the rib. Adam said. . This now the bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh She shall be called woman For she was taken out of man. For this reason a man will leave father and mother and join with his wife and they will become one flesh. They were both naked and they did not feel shame. |
| Now the serpent was craftier than any of the other animals of the field the God had made. He said to the woman "Is it true that God said you must not eat of any tree in the garden." The woman replied "We may eat of any tree in the garden, but he did say that we must not touch the tree of knowledge if we did we would die." "You will not die surely." The serpent said to the woman. For God knows that if you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will become like him. Knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the fruit was good for food, was pleasing to the eye, and was also good for gaining knowledge. She took some and ate it and also gave some to her husband and he ate some. They heard God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. They realized they were naked so they made coverings for themselves out of fig leaves and hid. But called out "Where are you." Adam replied "We were afraid because were naked so we hid." God asked "Who told you you were naked. Have you eaten of the tree that I forbade you to eat from." Adam said "the woman you put here gave me some fruit and I ate it." God asked the woman "What is this you have done." The woman said "the serpent deceived me and I ate." God said to the serpent "Because you have done this. "Cursed are you above all other animals." "You will crawl on your belly. And you will eat dust. All the days of your life I will put enmity between you And the woman. And between your offspring And hers. He will crush your head And you will strike his heel. To the woman God said I will greatly increase Your pain in childbearing With pain you will give birth Your desire will be for husband And he will rule over you." To the man he said "Cursed is th ground Because of you Through painful toil Will you eat of it All the days your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you. You will eat the plants of the field By the sweat of your brow Will you eat you food Until you return to the ground. For from it you were taken. For dust you are And to dust you will return Adam called his wife Eve, for she would be the mother of all the living. God made garments out of skins and clothed them. God said they must not be allowed to reach out and eat of the tree of life so at the eastern entrance of Eden God placed a cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the path to the tree of life. |
| Adam lay with Eve and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain, she said "with the help of the Lord I have given birth to a man." Later she gave birth to Abel. Now Abel kept flocks and Cain worked the soil. In time Cain brought some of the fruits of the field as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought fat portions of some of the first born of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abels offering he did not look with favor on the offering of Cain. Cain became very angry and his face downcast. The Lord asked "why is your face downcast if you do what is right will you not be accepted. But if you do not what is right sin is waiting at your door, it desires to have you, you must master it." Cain said to Abel "Let us go into the field." While they were in the field Cain struck his brother Abel and killed him. Then then the Lord said "where is Abel." Cain responded "I don't know, am I my brother's keeper." The Lord said,"Listen, your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are cursed and driven from the ground which opened its mouth to receive Abels blood. When you work the land it will no longer yield it's crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer" Cain said "this punishment is more than I can bear. I will be hidden from you. Who ever finds me will kill me." The Lord said "Not so whoever kills you will suffer Vengence seven times over." Then he put a mark on Cain so that he would not be killed." So Cain set out from Eden and lived in the land of Nod. Cain lay with his wife and she became pregnant and she gave birth to Enoch. Cain was their building a city which he named after his son. To Enoch was born irad And irad was the father of Mehujael Mehujael was the of Methushael Methushael was the father of Lamach. Lamach married two women one was named Adah the other was nam d Zillah. Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those that live in tents and raise livsock. His brother's name was Jabal, he was those who play the harp and the flute. Zillah also gave birth to a son his name was Tubal-Cain who forged all kinds of tools, he had a sister named Nammah. Lamach said to his wives Adah, Zillah listen to me Wives Lamach hear my words I have killed a man for wounding me A young man for injuring me If Cain is avenged seven time Then Lamach is avenged seventy times Adam lay with his wife again and she gave birth to a son she named Seth saying God has given me another son to replace Abel since Cain killed him. Seth also had a son named Enoch. At that time men began calling on the name of the Lord |
| This is the account of Adam's Line When God created humans, He made them in His own image. He created them male and female and blessed them when they were created. He called them men when Adam was 130 years old. He had a son in his own likeness he named his son Seth. Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Then he died after having lived a total of 930 years. when Seth had lived 105 years, he had a son named Enosh. After becoming the father of Enosh, Seth lived another 807 and other sons and daughters, and died at the age of 912. when Enosh was 90 years old became the father of Kenan after he became the father of Kenan, he lived another 815 years and had other sons and daughters then he died having lived 905 years. when Kenan was 70 years old year he had a son Mahalalal after he fathered Mahalalal he lived 840 years and had died at the age of 910. whwn Mahalalal had lived 65 years he became the father of jared after he became the father of jared, Mahalalal lived 830 yeadrs and had other sons and daughters, and died having lived 895 years. when jared had lived 162 years jared became the father of Enoch after becoming the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 and had other sons and daughters and died having lived 962. when Enoch had lived 65 years he became the father of Methusalah.
