Genesis 2: The name Eden has two possible origins, one is the Sumerian word eden which translates to steppe or open field or the same word in semitic which means luxury or delight . In the bible Eden refers not only to the garden in which the first human lived but the metaphorical Garden of God. Edens exact location remains a mystery Genesis 2:8 states that God planted the garden in the east in Eden which indicates that the garden was easy of Canaan in addition the Bible associates four rivers with Eden. The Pishon, the Gihon, the Tigris, and the Euphrates. The Tigris and Euphrates are most likely the Mesopotamian rivers that still bear those names. The Gihon whose name possibly comes from the Hebrew word meaning to gush. And the Pishon whose name probably comes from the semitic word meaning to spring up are more difficult to place. A spring named Gihon waters Jerusalem but this location does not match the description of it flowing through the land of Cush. Many scholars believe that the Gihon is the Nile since Cush is sometimes associated with Nubia south of Egypt, but if this is true it becomes impossible to make sense of Edens location because the Nile never converges with the Tigris and Euphrates. Others identify Cush as the land of Kassites east of the Tigris, also refered to as Kush this theory makes better geographical sense, still other posit that the Pishon and the Gihon are tributaries of the Tigris and Euphrates. Another challenge is determining the relationship between the four rivers and the single river that flowed through Eden. Most scholars believe they are down stream from Eden which implies that all four rivers have a common source which places Eden in either northern Mesopotamia or Armenia. However, this theory poses a problem since the Tigris and Euphrates do not share a common source. The suggestion that the rivers were upstream of Eden makes sense because these two river converge in southern Mesopotamia before emptying into the Persian Gulf. The two most likely locations are northern Mesopotamia, Armenian mountains, or southern Mesopotamia
By the seventh day God had finished his work so on that he rested from all his labors. And God blessed that day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the creating he had done Adam and Eve This is the story of the heavens and earth when they were created. When God made the earth and the heavens, and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth. And no plant had yet sprung up. For God had not sent rain over the earth and there was no man to work the field. But streams came up from the earth and watered the surface of the ground. God formed a man from the dust of the earth. God exhaled the breath of life in to his nostrils and the man came alive. Now God planted a garden in the east in Eden, and there he put the man he had made. God made all kinds of trees grow up from the ground. These trees were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the center of the garden were the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge. The river that watered the garden flowed from there and formed the head waters of four rivers. The Pishon, which flowed through Havila, the Gihon which flows through the land of Cush, the third river is the Tigris which runs along the eastern edge of Asshur and the fourth river is the Euphrates. God put the man in the garden to work and look after it. God commanded the man "You are allowed to eat of any tree in the garden. But you must not touch the Tree of Knowledge. For if you eat of it you will surely die." Now God said "it is not good for him to be alone, I need to make a suitable helper for him." Now God formed from the earth all the various beasts of the field of the birds of the air and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. What ever he called them that became their name. But no suitable helper was for Adam. So God put Adam in to a deep sleep. He removed one of the mans ribs and filled the empty place with flesh. God formed a woman from the rib. Adam said. . This now the bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh She shall be called woman For she was taken out of man. For this reason a man will leave father and mother and join with his wife and they will become one flesh. They were both naked and they did not feel shame.
Now the serpent was craftier than any of the other animals of the field the God had made. He said to the woman "Is it true that God said you must not eat of any tree in the garden." The woman replied "We may eat of any tree in the garden, but he did say that we must not touch the tree of knowledge if we did we would die." "You will not die surely." The serpent said to the woman. For God knows that if you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will become like him. Knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the fruit was good for food, was pleasing to the eye, and was also good for gaining knowledge. She took some and ate it and also gave some to her husband and he ate some. They heard God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. They realized they were naked so they made coverings for themselves out of fig leaves and hid. But called out "Where are you." Adam replied "We were afraid because were naked so we hid." God asked "Who told you you were naked. Have you eaten of the tree that I forbade you to eat from." Adam said "the woman you put here gave me some fruit and I ate it." God asked the woman "What is this you have done." The woman said "the serpent deceived me and I ate." God said to the serpent "Because you have done this. "Cursed are you above all other animals." "You will crawl on your belly. And you will eat dust. All the days of your life I will put enmity between you And the woman. And between your offspring And hers. He will crush your head And you will strike his heel. To the woman God said I will greatly increase Your pain in childbearing With pain you will give birth Your desire will be for husband And he will rule over you." To the man he said "Cursed is th ground Because of you Through painful toil Will you eat of it All the days your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you. You will eat the plants of the field By the sweat of your brow Will you eat you food Until you return to the ground. For from it you were taken. For dust you are And to dust you will return Adam called his wife Eve, for she would be the mother of all the living. God made garments out of skins and clothed them. God said they must not be allowed to reach out and eat of the tree of life so at the eastern entrance of Eden God placed a cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the path to the tree of life.
Adam lay with Eve and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain, she said "with the help of the Lord I have given birth to a man." Later she gave birth to Abel. Now Abel kept flocks and Cain worked the soil. In time Cain brought some of the fruits of the field as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought fat portions of some of the first born of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abels offering he did not look with favor on the offering of Cain. Cain became very angry and his face downcast. The Lord asked "why is your face downcast if you do what is right will you not be accepted. But if you do not what is right sin is waiting at your door, it desires to have you, you must master it." Cain said to Abel "Let us go into the field." While they were in the field Cain struck his brother Abel and killed him. Then then the Lord said "where is Abel." Cain responded "I don't know, am I my brother's keeper." The Lord said,"Listen, your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are cursed and driven from the ground which opened its mouth to receive Abels blood. When you work the land it will no longer yield it's crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer" Cain said "this punishment is more than I can bear. I will be hidden from you. Who ever finds me will kill me." The Lord said "Not so whoever kills you will suffer Vengence seven times over." Then he put a mark on Cain so that he would not be killed." So Cain set out from Eden and lived in the land of Nod. Cain lay with his wife and she became pregnant and she gave birth to Enoch. Cain was their building a city which he named after his son. To Enoch was born irad And irad was the father of Mehujael Mehujael was the of Methushael Methushael was the father of Lamach. Lamach married two women one was named Adah the other was nam d Zillah. Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those that live in tents and raise livsock. His brother's name was Jabal, he was those who play the harp and the flute. Zillah also gave birth to a son his name was Tubal-Cain who forged all kinds of tools, he had a sister named Nammah. Lamach said to his wives Adah, Zillah listen to me Wives Lamach hear my words I have killed a man for wounding me A young man for injuring me If Cain is avenged seven time Then Lamach is avenged seventy times Adam lay with his wife again and she gave birth to a son she named Seth saying God has given me another son to replace Abel since Cain killed him. Seth also had a son named Enoch. At that time men began calling on the name of the Lord
| This is the account of Adam's Line When God created humans, He made them in His own image. He created them male and female and blessed them when they were created. He called them men when Adam was 130 years old. He had a son in his own likeness he named his son Seth. Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
