| After seeing the enthusiastic responses from my heroes for WDC's 18th birthday, I asked myself if I had 18 reasons to love my first and only writing family as well. I came up with: 1. My first and most important writing mentor Christopher Roy Denton   2. All the contests, shops, activities run by Choconut   3. Schnujo  's crazy generosity and her "The Contest Challenge" for making me keep writing outside my comfort zone 4. LJ hiding under the bed 's "Scheming Scoundrel's Forum of Finesse" for making me greedy 5. Cat Voleur 's beautifully formatted reviews 6. Tobber 's super detailed reviews and willingness to critique my very long works 7. 🌝 HuntersMoon  for always setting high standards to beat in pretty much every single contest. 8. So many fascinating people, writers, poets, readers, literature enthusiasts, from so many different cultures and backgrounds; WDC is a world in itself. 9. The entire team of rotating judges and daily writers over at "SCREAMS!!!" 10. A kindred soul in Warped Sanity  11. "The Rockin' Reviewers" 12. Tileira  and everything to do with "World Weavers' Championship" that is teaching so much about world creation 13. The support everyone shows for one another, especially for newbies. 14. Always something new and surprising at "The Bard's Hall Contest" 15. New contests and activities popping up all the time. 16. | I'm trying to choose a story to submit to The Masters Review. The magazines/ e-zines/ publishers I've submitted to so far have always had a specific theme or genre requirement, but not this one. This actually has me stumped. Instead of going 'Aha! I have a story that fits' or 'Both of these work, but this is definitely better', I suddenly have too many halfway decent choices, and can't make up my mind. They are all my babies, and I don't have a personal favourite, so I need some outside perspective here. Would anyone like to make a recommendation? I'm in this phase where I want to send out as many submissions as possible, get a feel for what gets accepted and what doesn't. (I'm expecting, or should I be hoping? for a 10% acceptance rate, and my rationale is that supposing I'm a 10% hit rate writer, sending out one story would only give me a 10% chance, so I figure I should submit to at least ten different places, if I want to get something published. However I am a noob at this, so anyone with more experience, please feel free to educate me if my reasoning is way off) All your recommendations will probably help me decide which piece(s) to feature in my Fiction Portfolio for my MFA in Creative Writing applications as well. |
| Hi, Azrael. The main thing you want to do is be sure of their guidelines. Do they accept multiple submissions? Do they accept simultaneous submissions (some publishers don't want your stories to be submitted anywhere else until they make their own decision on it)? Try to do some research on who you're submitting to (acceptance rate, how long they've been around, etc.). I highly recommend Duotrope. They helped me find my first publishers, and they're an invaluable source to any and all writers looking for a market! That's about all I got right now, but if I think of anything else I'll let you know. PS-I have a lot of 'babies' myself, but sometimes we have to choose one over the other...  |

| I am also doing the Bard's Hall Challenge. I took on the challenge as a way to motivate myself to actually start consistently writing in my blog again. It is helping, but it's slow going. I write in my blog for me, and I am always surprised when someone makes a comment in passing that references something I've written in my blog and nowhere else. I have found that people do read the blogs but don't always respond for whatever reason. Just keep writing! |
Okay, so I completed my entry for this month's Journey Through Genres contest, which is actually planned as the first part of a 10,000 word scifi short thriller. I would love feedback on whether this first part does well enough as a stand-alone short story. Completely aware that my characterisation needs more depth, and perhaps I need to cut back on the history parts. Anything else?

| Congratulations to everyone who was honoured at the Quills Ceremony! Scrolling through the results made me realise how much work went into making this happen, and I am not only impressed, but deeply appreciative of the amazing effort the organisers and presenters put in to make this happen. You bring joy into the hearts of so many here at WDC, and remind us that our writing efforts are recognised and valued -- thank you! I am deeply honoured to have been voted into the finals of so many categories, and received several honourable mentions and Quills. WDC is where I started and honed my writing, and I have learnt so much from the writers, poets, reviewers, and wonderful community here. Without people like Christopher Roy Denton , 🌝 HuntersMoon , Hannah ♫♥♫ , Warped Sanity , ♥HOOves♥  , Tobber , Cinn , Choconut , who have either schooled, advised, inspired, encouraged, supported me, or done all of the above, and so many others I have not mentioned here, I would not have achieved what I have. Thank you all for being a part of my writing, and my continuing journey as a writer. A huge shout out to Schnujo for upgrading me to a premium membership -- wow! Now I can put up all the novels and novellas I have been working on. Tomorrow will hopefully be my last day hospitalised. The doctors have reluctantly agreed to discharge me and allow me to return daily for my treatment, which is expected to last another 6 to 12 weeks. They just discovered two huge abscesses, each 10 to 20 cm long, along my abdominal muscles caused by the infection. The size and location makes an operation difficult, and they hope that the daily antibiotics drip will reduce and even eliminate them completely. This news about the Quills has cheered me up lots, and will definitely give me a boost on my road to recovery! |
| Dear WDC friends, I have been suffering from high fever and unusual fatigue for the last two weeks and was finally admitted to the hospital on Sunday for blood infection. Apparently some strange bacteria managed to sneak into my bloodstream and create havoc, raising my white blood cell counts to 35 times normal level! After every possible test they could administer, the doctors had finally prescribed a treatment of 3 different antibiotics, and have demanded that I stay here in the hospital where there is of course no Wifi... Hopefully I will be out of here soon, and writing again! |
| I will be focusing on my novels this September, so contests and all the fun on WDC will be taking a backseat while I juggle all my different story projects. Personal NaNoWriMo! |

| So I sent 6 of my short stories that fit the length requirements to a Singapore-based contest, choosing 1 from each genre since I don't know what I'm really good at, or what the judges are looking for. I didn't win, but 3 of my submissions were chosen to be published in their anthology (placing 4th, 6th, and 22nd). These are my first ever published short stories -- "Invalid Item" , "Invalid Item" and "Invalid Item" . |

it's great to know you too, my friend! 
But, to business. I am here thanks to the Wonderland Challenge. One of my tasks is to comment on other's Notebooks, so I'm going down my friends list, doing just that (it's easier than looking for random people). I also have to say, "one step closer to White/Red Queen/King."
Obviously, I'm grateful for the opportunity to leave my mark in your Notebook but it also means I can thank you for some of the best reading experiences I've had in WdC. Thank you!
