"Seriously now, you can not expect me to believe that a rooster ate my garden!?"

I looked at him and hung my head in shame.  How could he always make me feel so bad when I had been feeling good?  I didn't want to tell him the truth.  The truth was that I had made a big mistake.  I had gone inside and rooster broke out of his pen and decided that he wanted to gobble down all the carrots and radishes.  I know.  I should have kept him in but he had broken out of a number of them lately.

I lifted my head and looked him in the eyes.  "Not my fault," I mumbled.  "He saw your chicken and broke out. Guess he thought that he could impress her by being a thief.  I can't get into his head so I don't know. Maybe if you had kept your girl in my boy would have behaved himself.  I will pay for your vegetables though, least I can do."

He looked at me and grinned.  "Watching you chase that rooster down was payment enough.  He went right, you went left, him left and you right.  Never thought you could catch him.  You landing flat on your rear was the funniest thing I had seen in forever.  Right in that mud hole too!  Seriously, payment unnecessary."

With that I took his hand, shook it and, lo and behold, when I left I had a number in my hand with the words "Call me" written in big red letters.

I got home, put my now muddy clothes in the wash and the phone rang.  His sultry voice came on the line.  "Should we have rooster and chicken for dinner tonight eh?"  This was surely the best mistake I had ever made!
