a response poem to my poem "Running," reprinted after this poem
Sometimes, I say I want things to go
back to the way they were, back
before we changed everything
and took a new route in our lives.
Would that U-turn
in the course of our hard-won
progress limit our dynamic
new growth sprouting up
in our midst out of the jumble
of the remnants?
Limit the extent of
our possibilities?
Shatter the serenity of
our new-found peace of mind?
Would going back be regression, not progress?
Can we even go back to see it intact somewhere, or
did we bring the pieces of our old happpiness
all packed in paper boxes, retrievable from the
mini-storage unit containing
the distilled. sorted remainder
of our memories?

RUNNING
I have hit the ground,
running,
in my new life!
My soul is less jarred
in my new life.
