Flash fiction contest entry - man realizes his mistake. Asks for forgiveness. |
Take Me Back "I suppose you think that's funny," he said. He glanced toward her but diverted his eyes quickly, not ready to face her gaze. "Actually, I think it's rather sad," she replied. She twisted the paper napkin tighter around her fingers. He remembered this nervous habit. The air was still and hot. The patio at the tiny Mexican cafe had been one of their favorite spots. The oversized margaritas sitting atop bright orange tablecloths and the Mariachi trio serenading patrons always seemed to lighten their mood. Now, he hoped the Mariachi players stayed far away. Six weeks earlier he'd delivered his well rehearsed speech telling her he was moving out and seeing a younger woman. Twenty years younger. He'd needed a change. She was exciting, he'd said. This woman had reminded him what love felt like, he'd told her. Three days ago, he'd come home to find a note from his new love telling him she'd decided to move on. She'd cleared all of her things from his newly acquired apartment - and many of his. "Rachel, I was confused. I know that now and I need you to forgive me. I just needed to get something out of my system. You understand?" He studied her face as she stared at a happy young couple holding hands across the patio, searching her expression for an encouraging sign. He didn't find one. He wondered how he could have so effortlessly dismissed such a beautiful face. The woman he truly treasured. "Rachel, I want to come home. Will you take me back?" "Now that," she answered, "I think is funny." Pushing her chair back, she stood and turned her back to him. A little more time, he thought, as he watched her walk away. It's going to take a little more time. |
