A child decides on his future.
Just Like Me

Kathleen McNamara

I never saw it coming
but am pleased as I can be.
The youngest of our children
a storyteller, just like me.

He smiled at me broadly,
his diploma in his hands.
“Think back to that awful snowstorm.”
“We were stuck on the median.”

That had happened oh so long ago,
on a wicked winter day.
We were waiting for a tow truck
to help us on our way.

“The wait, it seemed forever,
so a story you did tell.”
About two dragons and an ugly troll
who cast an evil spell.”

“You kept us entertained that day
with tales of fairy lights.”
“Of wizards and their magic,
the spell broken by royal knights.”

“Mom, you always have a way with words,
and enjoy the things you do.”
“I decided on that snowy day
I’d be a writer, just like you.”
