When I draw from 19th-century mugshot photos, I think about who the prisoners were at their core—hardened criminals? Hungry innocents who stole bread? Larcenous miscreants? Many look like deer caught in the headlights, others mock the photographer, and some exude shame. I can't see AI catching the subtleties revealed by the muscle tension around the mouth, the squint in the eyes, or the chin angle.
A comment I left for an artist on Youtube 20 June 2025
I've been drawing, painting, and sculpting for over 60 years. The difference between your work and AI's is instantly apparent to me. Each element of your work has 'character'. Artwork produced by AI, because of how it is made, can't help but be a visual cliché. 'Boring' is the operative word for every AI artwork I've ever seen. All this said, AI will still steal substantial market share because most people can't see the difference.
