Read it, its good trust me

Tyler - 6:50 am Friday April

An alarm filled the silent room’s air. Tyler rose from his bed, though sunlight still shone against his face. He grabbed his phone and turned off the alarm. Tyler felt that today was going to be a good day. After all, he planned a party today. His mom would be out of town, so why not? Though she wasn’t yet. Tyler heard her yell his name from the kitchen.
“Tyler! Get your butt up, I need you to take your sister to school!”
         “Yes, ma’am.”
He got out of bed, letting his feet slide into his white pair of shoes. He slept in the clothes he was going to wear the next day. Slumping into his bathroom and slowly applying toothpaste to his toothbrush, Tyler looked at himself in the mirror.          Last night's basketball game was tough. They lost one to ten. Plus, Jaylen had slammed his knee against Tyler’s leg by mistake, leaving a big bruise. Tyler told himself not to worry about it.
Tyler finished brushing his teeth and applying location to his face. He walked out of his room, grabbing his bag while on his way out. Tyler trekked down the carpeted stairs and strolled into the kitchen. He gave his mom a kiss on the cheek while grabbing a cup.
         “Morning ma’.”
“Good morning, you ready? I have to go soon and I can’t take Jasmine. Gainey doesn’t like kids in his office or building.”
         “Yeah, ma.”
Tyler poured himself a cup of orange juice. Jasmine was sitting at the table while she finished her sandwich. Her hair was in cornrows, purple and clear star beads, wearing an Ariel dress. Tyler patted his sister on the shoulder.
“You look gorgeous again today, sis.”
“Thank you! I know.” She tossed her hair behind her shoulder which made Tyler chuckle. He grabbed her jacket and book bag, placing them on the chair. He took a few sips from his cup. His mom dried off her hands from doing the dishes then turned to Tyler while she grabbed her jacket and purse.
“I need you to take out the trash, baby, and feed Roxy. I love you both, bye.” She gave each of them a kiss then left the house, letting Roxy, their pitbull, inside.
“Roxy!” Jasmine cheered. She stuffed the rest of her sandwich in her mouth and ran over to the dog, petting her soft brown fur. Tyler drank the rest of his orange juice, placing the cup on the counter. He put Jasmine’s jacket on her then her bookbag.
“Go wait in the car, sissy.”
“Okay!” Jasmine patted Roxy’s head then walked out of the house. Tyler washed his cup, turned off the lights, poured Roxy some food, then grabbed the trash bag. He walked out the house and walked towards the car. He tossed the bag in the trash can beside the fencing. Jasmine was already in the car with her seatbelt on. Tyler sat in the driver's seat.
“Thank you, lord, for such a beautiful young lady named Jasmine Miller.” Tyler smiled, looking at this sister through the rearview mirror.
“Thank you, lord, for a big strong brother named Tyler!” Jasmine squeaked.
Tyler drove his sister to her school, making it on time. He watched her until she was inside the school before leaving. He pulled up to the school, parking in his usual spot. He got out of his car then made his way over to Isaiah’s car. A couple other friends made their way over there as well. Tyler hopped up onto the truck and sat down beside Isaiah. Tyler looked over at the blonde as a sigh left his lips.
“Tyler, man, I think I want to break up with Elizabeth. At least before her birthday so I’m not spending a hundred thousand dollars on her.”
“Really? I thought you loved her.”
         “I do… I guess, but I’m getting a little bored.”
“That’s- damn bro. At least break up with her in a nice way.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever, how are we friends?”
Tyler laughed, patting his hand on Isaiah’s back before adjusting his red jacket. A small chuckle left Isaiah’s lips. His blue eyes looked up to see Elizabeth pull in. Around him, Landon and Ian whistled. She looked like Jessica Rabbit: slim build, red dress, large red lips, and best of all, her golden red hair. Tyler knew not to catcall taken girls, even if he knew they were about to have a break up. Tyler hopped out of Isaiah’s truck then began walking with Landon and Ian towards the school entrance. Landon nudged Tyler then adjusted his hat. He and Ian looked just about like any basic yee-haw kid with matching camo hats, camo jackets, cargo shorts and boots.
“Aren’t you having a party today? I’m totally jumping in your pool backwards again.”
“Okay dude, just don’t break Jasmine’s toy again. Otherwise, you’re never coming back over.”
         “Yes, sir, Sargent Big Brother.”
“Shut up,” Tyler laughed and shoved his friend to the side. They walked into the school, nudged by students bustling around. Isaiah caught up with them, probably getting away from Elizabeth. He came over, being greeted by his friend, getting patted on the back and exchanging fist bumps.
“Ready for Mrs.Roberts test?” Isaiah asked. Landon shook his head.
“No way! I’m screwed over for her class.”
“Dude, lock in!” Ian smacked Landon on the back. Landon winched and rubbed the spot where he was hit. A hit from Ian was like a hit from the Hulk.
“I’d rather run for Coach Ham’s class the whole day than fail that test.”
“It’ll be the fourth test you fail,” Isaiah laughed. Tyler never understood why his friends were so careless about their grades. Did their parents never get on them about it? If Tyler started slipping into the 70s his mom would stand by the table with a belt until Tyler studied for an hour and got all his work done. Tyler never hated his mom for it. She just wanted him to be good in school and then get into a nice college.

At lunch, Tyler got himself the chicken burger and a chocolate milk. He never understood the strong hate against school food. Sure, it wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t bad. He sat at a booth with his friends. Tyler then remembered he needed to tell Ian and Jaylen about his party.
“Oh yeah, guys, my mom’s going out of town and, surprisingly, she said yes to a party. Just as long as I took my sister to her friend’s and kept the house clean afterwards. Tonight at around 8 is fine to come.”
“Sweet! I’ve been dying for some alcohol,” Ian cheered. Tyler shook his head.
“I don’t have alcohol there, you’ll have to bring your own. Just please take any bottles you have back.”
“Gotcha!” Ian and Jaylen gave each other a fist bump. Tyler looked over to see Hugo and his friend walking to the table. Tyler gave them a small greeting wave.
“Homecoming invites,” Hugo mumbled in his usual quiet monotone voice.
         “Thanks, hockey puck.”
“Don’t call me that, only my friend can.”
Isaiah looked at the smiling boy beside Hugo. He wore a happy smile.
“It’s okay, Hugo. Isaiah, Hugo doesn’t like you calling him that. It would be greatly appreciated if you would please stop.”
“Oh, shut up, I’ll let my country bomb you again. Hiroshima part two.”
The boy took a step back and frowned. Hugo raised his fist with an enraged look which Tyler totally thought was deserved. How could his friend be saying this stuff?
“The hell did you just say? I’ll punch that dumb smirk off your face!” Hugo yelled.
“Okay, hockey puck. I hope the Germans come for you again.”
         “You slimy son of a-”
“Isaiah!” Tyler raised his voice and snapped his fingers for Isaiah’s attention. Tyler slowly shook his head. Crossing his arms and putting on a firm expression, Tyler was ready to give Isaiah an earful.
“You went too far with that one. Enough of it.”
“Shut up, Tyler, you hate them too.”
“No, I do not. I’m tired of your bullying, especially when it hits racially.” Tyler rose from his spot. He scooted past his friends and walked over towards Hugo and his friend. He couldn’t sit with Isaiah using racist insults like that. Tyler didn’t even like racist jokes that much, especially after his dad died.
Hugo and his friend sat down at a table near the edge of the cafeteria. Hugo and his friend were arguing. Well, it was more one sided. Hugo was furious, speaking loudly while his friend more so tried to calm him down. Tyler sat down beside them. Hugo snapped his head to look at him.
         “Tell your friend to die!”
“Hugo! Calm down, please, just ignore them!” Hugo’s friend said frantically. He wrapped his arms around Hugo to get him contained. Tyler frowned, worried Hugo might hurt him but he seemed to calm down. Tyler rubbed his neck.
“Hey, I’m really sorry about my friend. I don’t tolerate that. I told him to stop but I don’t know if he will.”
“Oh thank you, do you know why Isaiah bullies Hugo?”
“I think it’s really because you guys are different. Really I’m sorry about him. But uh, how have you been?”
“Oh, good actually! Our cat had kittens last night.” Hugo’s friend smiled, then frowned as if worried Tyler was going to make a racist joke. Tyler wasn’t like that. He gave Hugo’s friend a smile.
“That sounds awesome. What type of cat? Also, what’s your name?”
Hugo’s friend smiled once more at Tylers question. “Well, Bông is the mom and she's a Siamese. Dung is the dad and he’s ginger. They had four cute kittens. Which is cool because we got two flame tip kittens! And those are rare. The other two are ginger and regular siamese. And my name's River.”
“River? Wow, that’s a nice name. Your cats sound cool and cute. I gotta see them some time.”
“Totally! Hugo was going to come over this weekend, maybe you can too. My mother said it was alright.”
“Cool, you alright with that Hugo?”
Tyler looked at Hugo who slowly turned to look at him. He nodded though his face said no. Hugo’s isolation made Tyler want to be his friend more. Help him open up. Might be good for him.
“Yeah, anyway, I’ma go now. Landon said if I beg him enough he’ll give me a dollar.”
River smiled and waved bye to Tyler, which made his chest warm up. It felt nice to be kind to bullied kids. River seemed like a good guy, Tyler didn’t understand why Isaiah was so judgmental and rude.
Tyler then remembered he forgot to ask them about coming over to his party. That’ll be okay, they have class fourth block together. And also Tyler forgot to tell Isaiah and his girlfriend. Tyler finished lunch. Once they were in forth block and settled into class, Tyler got up during work time and walked over to Elizabeth and Isaiah.
“I’m bored, and my parents are out of state, so I’m throwing a party. You’re all invited.”
“Oh my god, yay! Are you sure you want the hockey puck to come?” Elizabeth pointed to Hugo who rolled his eyes. Tyler watched as Isaiah scoffed and got out of his seat. That was probably because he was either mad at him or didn’t want to hear Tyler invite Hugo, but Tyler wanted Hugo to come.
“Yeah, I don’t mind if he comes,” Tyler shrugged and nodded.
         “I don’t think I’ll come,” Hugo mumbled.
“How come? Because we’ll have football on the TV?” Tyler laughed then patted his shoulder firmly. “I’m just messin’ with you, bro.”
         “Yeah…”
“Anyway, enough about Hugo and more about me. My birthday is coming up and I think Isaiah is planning me the best birthday gift ever-”
“Oh, it’s your birthday soon? Isaiah said that he hopefully won’t be with you by then- oh, uh… nevermind.” Tyler quickly walked over to his desk and sat down. Tyler rubbed his hand across his face. Jerome slumped into his seat next to Tyler.
“What’s the matter?” he asked as he moved one of his dreads out his face. Tyler sighed.
“I didn’t mean to tell Elizabeth about Isaiah wanting to break up with her but maybe it’s good she knows. Though maybe it would’ve been better if I just didn’t say anything.”
“Come on, dude, stop worrying about making everything okay. I mean, not everything is going to be okay all the time. You’re too much of a good kid.”
“I just like what’s best for people.”
“Yeah, yeah. Can I have the homework?”
Tyler gave his friend a deadpan look. “Nah, Jerome, you should be doing that yourself.”
         “Oh come on!”
Tyler laughed and nudged him playfully. A sudden move of excitement filled Tyler’s stomach. He couldn’t wait for the party.

After school, Tyler picked up his sister and dropped her off at her friend's house. Which just so happens to be Jaylen’s house but he was hanging out with Jerome at the moment. Jasmine and Bonnie, Jaylen’s little sister, liked to play together all the time. Jaylen’s dad was cool; he’s a teacher from the school but it wasn’t awkward or anything meeting him all the time to visit Jaylen or drop Jasmine off.
Tyler picked up Jaylen from the park around 4-5 and made sure to tell him about how he had to help set up the party. Tyler instructed Jaylen to set up tables outside by the pool while Tyler grabbed all the games from his attic. They set the games out then grabbed all his snacks from the kitchen. There were two boxes of chips, a bunch of soda, little cakes, fruit snacks (Tyler doubted anyone would eat those), and sandwiches. He put the game on but added music in the background. Jaylen looked over at Tyler at some point and smiled.
“Did you invite Elizabeth and her friends?”
“Yeah, of course. I hope Alice shows up.”
         “Aww~”
         “Okay, okay, shut up.”
         “I hope Wendy shows.”
“Dude, find a girl who you know will care more about you. She’ll just ask you to buy her more vapes.”
         “No way.”
“Jay-” Tyler was cut off as the gate to his backyard opened and a couple kids walked in. Tyler smiled at them all.
"Welcome! You’re all a little early.”
“Yeah, well, I heard the game was going to be on early today so I had to be, too!” shouted one of the guys. He walked over to a lawn chair and sat on it, watching the TV through the glass doors. He grabbed a bag of chips and began eating. Tyler rolled his eyes at that. There were maybe three other people, two girls and another guy. The guy dabbed up Jaylen and began to help him set out the cups.
It didn’t take long for people to show up. Before twenty minutes could pass, Tyler’s backyard was filled with teenagers. Isaiah showed up with Ian and Landon quickly after. Tyler decided not to linger over there so he stuck with Jaylen, his friend, and Jerome. Elizabeth showed up with her friends, and Tyler couldn’t help but let his eyes wander over to Alice. She looked gorgeous. The pink dress she wore looked amazing on her and her glasses seemed to top it off. Tyler frowned when he heard a scoff leave Elizabeth’s lips. She snatched the glasses off Alice’s face and tossed them aside.
         “Perfect girls don’t wear glasses.”
         “O-oh, sorry Elizabeth.”
“Right,” Elizabeth nodded, then looked at Wendy. That made Tyler mad so he decided to go up to Isaiah.
“Dude, your girlfriend is so rude. She took Alice’s glasses off and tossed them aside. Why is she so mean to such a sweet girl anyway? Alice is too nice to be treated like this!” Tyler grabbed a red cup and poured himself some coke. Isaiah didn’t seem interested in his complaining but Tyler still wanted to say it. He looked over to see Elizabeth storming over to them.
“Isaiah,” she started, “I was told by your little friend here that you wanted to break up before my birthday.”
“What?” Isaiah’s eyebrows furrowed. Tyler bit his lip in guilt as he felt his friends glare on him.
“Look, dude, I didn’t mean too! Plus, you shouldn’t keep that from her.” Isaiah didn't want to hear it. He tried not to focus on the argument, only catching Elizabeth breaking up with him. He knew Isaiah would be mad but he should’ve broken up with her a while ago anyway. Tyler jerked up when he noticed Isaiah snapping his head towards him.
“What the hell, dude? I was planning on doing it myself! Why did you tell her?”
“I'm sorry! It slipped out! Plus, I know you, Isaiah. You would've taken five more weeks to break up with her and that's horrible for a girl. Letting her live thinking you love her.”
“I had it planned out, Tyler! Forget you!”
“Wait, dude,” Tyler grabbed Isaiah's wrist before he could storm away. “I'm sorry, but you know I'm right. Don't stay mad at me, you're my best bro.”
“Whatever. I'm talking to that hoe.”
Isaiah snatched his hand away from Tyler. Tyler frowned as his best friend stormed away. Tyler didn’t want his friend mad at him for long, but Tyler figured he would be okay. Isaiah was petty but not that petty.
Then, Tyler felt somebody poke him. He looked over to see some kid in a black hoodie, his face hidden. He handed something to Tyler. Alice's glasses.
         “Thanks, Alice needs these.”
The kid nodded then quickly shuffled away. Tyler looked over to see Alice by the table he was at. He was squinting her eyes looking for something on the table. Tyler walked over.
“Hey, what are you looking for?”
         “Oh um, Wendy wanted Cheetos.”
“Oh okay, here.” Tyler grabbed a bag of Cheetos and handed it to her. She looked at him, well the best she could, and smiled.
“Thank you,”Alice mumbled softly. She began to walk away but Tyler stopped her, grabbing her wrist.
“Hey, wait, why aren’t you wearing your glasses?”
“Well, Elizabeth says I shouldn’t wear them. Perfect girls have perfect eyesight. No guy would date me if I had glasses.”
Tyler frowned and shook his head. He pulled her a little closer then took out her glasses. He slowly put them onto her face then brushed back her hair.
“I think you look amazing with glasses.”
“Really?” Alice’s face lit up with a bright beautiful smile. Seeing her happy brought some kind of joy to Tyler.
“Really,” Tyler smiled. “Do you… want to dance?”
         “Yes, I’d love to.”
Tyler gently grabbed Alice’s hand and walked her closer to the music where other people were dancing. Tyler rested a hand on her hip. When Alice wrapped her arms around Tyler’s neck, his heart rate quickened. Nothing could compare to how amazing Tyler felt right now. Alice looked up at Tyler with her big brown eyes. They were just stunning.
Tyler began to lean in, wanting to kiss Alice’s plump lips. Before Tyler had the chance, Jaylen ran out from the house, pushing over some props.
“Everyone, stop! Isaiah and Elizabeth are dead!”

8:26 pm

Tyler never felt so urgent to get away from Alice. Tyler pulled away and ran into the house. He froze as if the weird ice lady from Bonnie’s favorite movie Frozen had struck him. Isaiah and Elizabeth were on the floor. Both their necks slit. Isaiah’s hand lingered an inch away from the knife in his neck. Did he kill himself? And his girlfriend? Why would he do such a thing?
Tyler snapped out of these thoughts then yelled at everybody to leave immediately and call the police.
“Everyone go! You don’t need to see this! Call the cops!”
Tyler shooed everyone away. To Tyler’s disliking, Alice nudged her way to the front. Tyler grabbed her shoulders and moved her away.
“No, no, please go. I don’t want you to see.”
         “But-”
         “Baby, no. Go please.”
Tyler gave her a kiss on the forehead then pushed her out the house. A couple of people lingered, either they didn’t have a ride or were wanting to see how this turned out.
It didn't take long for the police to show up. It all went by so fast for Tyler he could barely remember how he responded to them. Tyler stayed at Jaylen’s house until the police cleaned up the crime scene. Jasmine and Jaylen's little sister asked why Tyler looked so upset, but Tyler had to tell her it was nothing to worry about.

12:05 am Wednesday May

The next couple of weeks were rather stressful for Tyler. They called him a in lot to ask questions about the murder. Tyler tried not to think about it. Not in class. Not at lunch. Not at practice. Any place that Tyler was with Isaiah.
Isaiah’s parents were taking it hard. Tyler would come over and help them with whatever was needed since they were hurt with grief and the loss of their son. The police haven't a clue who could’ve killed Isaiah except himself. No one seemed suspicious, and Tyler had no cameras in the house so they couldn’t look at any footage. They found no other fingerprints on the knife except his. So the police settled with thought that Isaiah killed Elizabeth then himself during a heated argument. It didn’t make sense to Tyler why Isaiah would end his life. Even over something like that, but he settled and just believed the police.
The only good thing that has happened about that night of the party was Tyler’s new girlfriend. Alice. It was lunchtime in school on a calm Wednesday. Tyler sat with Alice on his left and Ian on his right. Jaylen sat across from him with Jerome on his left. Landon had a grumpy face beside him while he ate his hot dog.
“Sucks, who will Wendy share her vapes with?”
Jerome shoved him in the side. Jaylen winched.
“She hangs out with Teigen now instead of me. So, I don't have any friends.”
Tyler gave Alice a small kiss on the forehead. She looked a little bit anxious as she always did. Their hands were interlocked underneath the table. Tyler tried to think back to the night of the suicide. It made a little sense to Tyler. Isaiah was really mad and really drunk. He knew he and Elizabeth were fighting it out, but Tyler would’ve never thought his friend would kill himself. The police had said it was so simple, but nothing about the blood felt simple.

Alice - 7:20 am Friday April

The loud chitter chatter of teens danced in the bus air. Alice was sitting beside Wendy who was talking to Gabby in the seat across from them. Alice took in Wendy’s outfit for the day. Wendy’s blonde hair was curled with a purple bow to match her puffy jacket. Her blue jeans hugged her legs tightly and ended with white Nikes. The mole on her face seemed to be more prominent today. Alice’s hair was naturally curled. Alice had on a yellow top with a white jacket to match. She had the same ripped blue jeans that Elizabeth has. Elizabeth always said they looked better on her than Alice. She wore pink earrings that were pierced through her light chocolate skin.
Alice fiddled with her dark hair and adjusted her pink glasses. As always, she wasn’t exactly excited to see Elizabeth. In the friend group, Elizabeth, Wendy, and Alice, Alice was always left out. Elizabeth didn’t really treat her like a friend and Wendy did nothing about it as Elizabeth was the boss.
Once they were off the bus and in the school, they made their way to the cafeteria and waited by the bathroom to see Elizabeth. The scent of lemon filled the air. Alice looked over to see Wendy taking a wisp from her vape. Alice looked over to see Elizabeth in her red dress. It was so gorgeous, like her. in. Alice smiled, showing her pink braces.
“Elizabeth, I just love your dress today!”
“Uh, thanks.” Elizabeth took out her phone to take a picture of herself. Wendy stuffed the vape into her bra and smiled.
         “Girl, I love that dress!”
“Oh my gosh, thank you, Wendy! Only you know how to compliment me!”
Wendy giggled and nudged Elizabeth playfully. Alice’s frown was simply ignored. An odd scent filled Alice’s nose. She looked over to see Hugo walking towards him with his little friend behind him. Alice couldn’t really place his name, but she knew he was nice to her. Anyone nice to her always caught her attention. He was holding papers. His scraggly brown hair had many different shades in it. Light freckles were scattered along his tanned skin. His green eyes weren't as lively as they should’ve been on a sunny day like this one. Alice knew Elizabeth would never even dare consider him attractive due to his thin build and hockey interest. Alice looked at Elizabeth and knew what she was thinking. Hugo was from Canada and Elizabeth always wondered if he spoke French. Now was a good time apparently.
         “Do you-”
“Here’s an invitation to homecoming,” Hugo interrupted. “You and Isaiah might win the homecoming king and queen or whatever.”
“Oh, I mean, yes, we will. Who could beat us anyway? We’re the best couple in school.”
         “Yes.”
Hugo turned around and began to walk away. Elizabeth shrugged before turning to her friends.
“Alice, no, focus on the jocks not on some hockey nerd.” Alice now could feel the blush on her cheeks. Alice began to walk with Elizabeth and Wendy towards their first block when Alice thought she felt a cold glare from behind the three of them. When she turned around, no one was there except students rushing by to get to class.

In Mr.Brown’s class, Alice made sure to pay attention because she knew Wendy and Elizabeth wouldn’t and they would want to look at her papers and homework later. Alice liked Mr.Brown. He was probably one of Alice’s favorite math teachers. At the end of the lesson, the teacher handed out papers. Alice began to do it but started to get distracted by doodling on her paper.
She liked drawing. It gave Alice a sense of place and peace. It gave her something to be proud of. When she got older, she wanted any job that involved art. She didn’t really mind what, just as long as she could draw or paint. She felt Elizabeth peer over her shoulder.
Alice frowned when she heard a scoff leave her lips.
“Art won’t get you anywhere. Plus, it sucks.”
Hugo, sitting at the table across from them looked over with an irritated expression. He put his red pencil down. “Elizabeth, as Alice’s friend, don’t you think you should be more supportive?”
“What? No, I mean, I’m encouraging her to do something better in her life. Duh.”
“Art could just be her hobby.”
“Oh, shut up and mind your business. What, do you like her or something?”
“I’m not dumb enough to date any from this school.”
“Whatever,” Elizabeth scoffed. She looked over to see Alice frowning which caused her friend to roll her eyes. It made Alice feel a certain way when Hugo started defending her but when he said he wouldn’t date anyone from the school it sort of upset her. Elizabeth took out her mini mirror to check her make up when the teacher stopped in front of her with a stern expression. He didn’t need to use words to tell her to work on her sheet. Elizabeth would just roll her eyes then began to pretend to do her work. Wendy then tugged on her shirt.
“Girl, please make me a pass, I have to go to the bathroom and take this vape or I’ll die.”
         “Sure, sure, girl, do that.”
Elizabeth watched her get up and quickly leave the classroom with her purse. Elizabeth, of course, did not make a pass. Alice, being a better friend, took the laptop and made a pass for Wendy. Alice finished that then looked up at Hugo. His friend, River, was patting him on the shoulder, as if trying to comfort him.

3:34 pm

When Alice made it back home she was filled with excitement. The first thing she did was beg her parents to let her go to the party. As long as she cleaned her room before she left, she was all good. She made sure to give her moms a big hug before rushing to her room. She picked out a nice outfit. She knew Elizabeth wouldn’t care for it but Alice loved the dress. Aunt Star had given it to her before she passed away. The dress was sparkling pink and would match her glasses. She picked out white heels to go along with them. She chose some pieces of jewelry and placed them on her dresser.
Alice spent the next hour and a half cleaning her room. She made sure her bed tucked into the corner of her room was made. Her Hello Kitty stuffed animal neatly rested against her pillow. Her dresser was wiped down beside her bed and she even dusted off the TV and adjusted her pink curtains. She looked around at the posters of K-Pop bands on her wall.
When it came around to eight, Alice was dressed and ready. Layla allowed her to use her car. Alice’s mom, Rachel, and Layla got married a couple years back. Alice missed her dad but Alice never saw Layla as a replacement. It never made Alice feel ashamed that she had two moms.
Layla’s car was a sleek black Jeep. Elizabeth never liked it, but Alice never let that bother her. She arrived at the party and quickly gathered with her friends. She smiled at them. Wendy wore a light teal dress around her thin figure with silver jewelry. She had two bright blue bows pinned in her pigtails.
A scoff left Elizabeth’s lips. She snatched the glasses off Alice’s face and tossed them aside.
         “Perfect girls don’t wear glasses.”
         “O-oh, sorry Elizabeth.”
“Right,” Elizabeth nodded, then looked at Wendy who was now drinking and vaping at the same time. Wendy adjusted her bra while she leaned on a table.
“I wonder who here will dance with me.” She grunted and stood up off the table. “Oh my gosh, it’s Teigen.”
Alice looked in the direction Wendy pointed in, unable to see anyone due to her not wearing her glasses, then looked where Elizabeth was only to find out she had walked away towards Isaiah. She turned to look back where Teigen was, who was flirting with a guy. Last Alice checked, Teigen’s boyfriend was Chance, not Aiden. Wendy shoved Alice’s arm.
“Stupid girl is cheating again. Can you get me some Cheetos or something?”
A small sigh left Alice’s lips in disappointment. Why couldn’t her friends just talk to her without making her do something for them or being criticized? Alice knew she shouldn’t let this get to her. She will still have fun even if she doesn’t have someone to dance with. Hugo didn’t show up to the party, so even if she had enough confidence, she wouldn’t be able to ask him to dance.
Alice stumbled around until she found the table. She squinted her eyes trying to see which foods were at the table when she heard a familiar voice.
"Hey, what are you looking for?”
         “Oh um, Wendy wanted Cheetos.”
“Oh okay, here.” Tyler grabbed a bag of Cheetos and handed it to her. She looked at him and smiled. Suddenly, Alice noticed how sweet his smile was.
“Thank you,”Alice mumbled softly. She began to walk away but Tyler stopped her, grabbing her wrist. His hands felt so soft and caring. Alice couldn’t stop the blush appearing on her cheeks.
“Hey, wait, why aren’t you wearing your glasses?”
“Well, Elizabeth says I shouldn’t wear them. Perfect girls have perfect eyesight. No guy would date me if I had glasses.”
Alice saw the frown on his face, and she suddenly wanted him to smile instead. Her heartbeat quickened when he grabbed her waist and pulled her closer. She blinked in surprise when he took out her glasses and placed them back on her. She felt like a giddy fan girl when he brushed her hair back on top of that.
“I think you look amazing with glasses.”
“Really?” Alice’s face lit up with a bright beautiful smile. It was hard to prevent.
“Really,” Tyler smiled. “Do you… want to dance?”
         “Yes, I’d love to.”
Tyler gently grabbed Alice’s hand and walked her closer to the music where other people were dancing. Tyler rested a hand on her hip. It brought Alice some bit of excitement. She wrapped her arms around his neck, eager to finally get her Disney movie dance. Alice looked up at Tyler, her eyes filled with some kind of affection. When she saw him lean in, she wanted to squeal. She was about to close her eyes and lean in but Jaylen bursted out of the house, yelling.
“Everyone, stop! Isaiah and Elizabeth are dead!”

8:26 pm

Alice felt a wave of confusion and panic as Tyler quickly pulled away from her and ran into the house. Elizabeth was dead? Why? Who did it? Alice tried to go after, getting nudged by Wendy complaining about her Cheetos. Alice rushed to the doors, shoving past kids when Tyler stopped her. He grabbed her shoulders and moved her away.
“No, no, please go. I don’t want you to see.”
         “But-”
         “Baby, no. Go please.”
Tyler gave her a kiss on the forehead then pushed her out the house. Obliging, she quickly turned the corner of Tyler’s backyard and rushed out towards her car. Her heart pounded in her chest as she started the car and began driving in silence. It was hard to process what just happened. Tears didn’t come, no matter how hard she blinked. It didn’t feel real. Her hands gripped the steering wheel tight. Isaiah is gone. So is her friend Elizabeth.
Tyler’s words, “Baby, no. Go please.” repeated in her head. His voice was anxious and filled with fear. The hum of her car driving was the only thing other than her wavy breath that filled the heavy silence that pressed her like a weight. How could anything be normal again?

12:05 am Wednesday May

The next couple weeks were stressful but not as stressful as Tyler. He was closer to Isaiah than Alice was to Elizabeth. And after Elizabeth’s death, Alice didn’t feel as empty as she thought she should. She felt horrible and guilty for even feeling a slight relief from Elizabeth. There was no one to tell her her glasses were ugly. Or her shoes or clothes. No one made fun of her drawings.
Alice felt her chest tighten. Not from grief, but from the guilt of not feeling it. Alice did hope that, maybe now with Elizabeth gone, she and Wendy could grow closer, but whenever she would reach out, no matter how many messages she sent, she was still left on read. Alice tried not to let this get to her. She had an amazing boyfriend now. Tyler was so kind and supportive.
Alice looked up at Jaylen who sat across from her with Jerome on his left.
“Sucks, who will Wendy share her vapes with?”
Jerome shoved him in the side. Jaylen winched.
“She hangs out with Teigen now instead of me. So, I don't have any friends.”
Tyler gave Alice a small kiss on the forehead. Alice felt Tyler look at her, maybe a bit out of concern. He always wanted her to be happy, so he would check in a lot. It made Alice feel butterflies. Tyler’s hand in hers felt better than anything that happened. That happiness beside her right now could make Elizabeth’s murder disappear from a trace in Alice’s mind. After all, Tyler’s love was all she needed.

Jaylen - 4:20 am Friday April

Jaylen woke up four hours after he went to bed. So what? Four hours of sleep was alright. Especially for Jaylen. He was always energetic and ready. Instead of doing any missing homework or work, he hopped on COD and played for two hours before finally getting ready. He was still in his underwear when his dad barged into the room to get him up.
“Get up, son. Put some pants on.”
Jaylen didn’t get to respond except with a groan of distress as he died. A soft scoff left his lips as he flipped off his game and pulled some ripped jeans on. He decided to wear the shirt he wore yesterday again. Why wouldn’t he wear his favorite Kirby shirt twice? It didn't smell that bad.
While he was combing through his hair he heard his little sister burst into his room. Bonnie put her hands on her small hips with a snarky expression. Jaylen inwardly groaned.
         “What do you want?”
         “Where's mommy?”
Jaylen blinked, confused. Did she really not know? “Not here. Mom and dad got a divorce, dummy. Because mom didn't want us.”
Bonnie's face fell and suddenly Jaylen felt really bad. He flinched when his dad appeared in the door with a stern expression.
“Jaylen, I told you I was going to tell her.”
         “I thought you did already!”
         “Go sit in the car.”
Jaylen scoffed and left his room. On his way out he grabbed a honey bun and a bottle of DrPepper. He plopped himself down in the passenger seat of his dad's white truck. He checked his watch a couple minutes later to read 6:32 am. His eyes darted up when the door opened and his dad walked Bonnie out of the house and to the truck.
Jaylen didn't say anything when his dad got into the car. Through the rear view mirror, Jaylen saw his little sister messing around with one of her dolls. She was such a baby.
Jaylen put his honey bun wrapper and tucked it in between the seat and door while his dad wasn't looking. He gave the old man a smile.
“So what are we doing in class today, Dad? Whatever it is, you should give me extra credit.”
“It doesn't work like that, son. And once we're on school grounds I am Mr.Brown to you.”
         Jaylen sighed, “Yes, sir.”
It wasn't as fun as Jaylen always thought it would be in elementary school, to have your parent as a teacher. They didn't give you extra credit or free 100’s. Worse, whenever Jaylen was bad in class, the other teachers tattle on him. Jaylen lost count of how many times his dad came into his class in the middle of the day to scold him in front of his friends. Then he would end up giving everyone lunch detention.
Though, Jaylen would take his dad over his mom any day. That woman despised him.

10:25 am

Jaylen was not listening. His eyes were focused on the Star Wars poster on his dad's wall. Did anyone ever call the big furry guy ‘Bigfoot’? Star Wars seemed interesting to Jaylen, but he preferred big machine guns and zombies. Zombies were so cool.
Jaylen slowly looked over at Jerome sitting beside him. He was tugging at one of his dreads while doing his homework he forgot to do for another teacher. Jaylen liked Jerome. He was the chillest guy Jaylen could hang out with. Nothing made him mad unless you were to say something about his friends or family. He also knew everything about all his friends. Everyone was comfortable talking to him yet he wasn't comfortable talking to his friends about himself. Suddenly, Jaylen had a thought.
“Yo, Jerome, you know anything about Tyler's dad?”
"Uh huh,” Jerome said, his voice deep. Once he finally looked at him, Jaylen continued.
“What happened? I know he died but how?”
“Uh… I don't think Tyler would mind if you knew, but don't bring it up or anything relating to it. I mean that.”
         “Alright.”
“Well, his dad was a pizza guy back in the city. Or something. He was delivering a pizza to a more white part of the city. Bunch of racists. Anyway, a group of white guys jumped the poor dude. He used to be in the military but he wasn't able to fight them back because he pulled something in his leg and there were so many of them. Most of the guys got sent to prison.”
Jaylen was silent. He didn't think that's how Tyler's dad died. Jaylen always assumed he died in a car crash or something. Jaylen didn't like the sudden silence that fell over them.
“Uh so, I guess they'll have to draft the pizza instead?”
Jerome looked at Jaylen with a small hint of irritation. “Dude, don't joke about that.”
“It was kind of funny though, right? Eh?”
“Jaylen, not everything should be turned into one of your dumb jokes.”
Jaylen scoffed and turned away. He was just trying to lighten the mood. When Jaylen looked up from his desk, his dad was standing there with his arms crossed.
“I told everyone to take out their Chromebooks and take the practice test. Were you listening?”
Jaylen blinked in surprise. He looked over at Jerome who had his laptop open and was already taking the test. Jaylen sighed and took out his Chromebook. Once he finished the test he pulled up YouTube and started watching some basketball games. Jaylen's attention shifted when Jerome nudged him.
“Wanna hang out with me after school before Tyler's party?”
“Uh- yeah! That'd be awesome!” Jaylen smiled. He didn't get to hang out with Jerome as often as he wanted to. This was going to be the best day ever.

3:38 pm

Jaylen convinced his dad to let him ride with Jerome and hang out with him before Tyler's party. His car smelt odd but Jaylen didn't say anything about it. Oh wait, he did.
“It smells like you've had a crap-covered sloth sleep in your car for nine months.”
         “What?”
Jaylen didn't say anything more. He looked at the floorboard. There was McDonald trash, Coke bottles, mail, and other random garbage. Jerome stopped at some park and got them Arby's. They sat down on a bench and began eating. Jaylen plopped a curly fry in his mouth.
“Heard Isaiah was going to break up with Elizabeth. But I thought the queen died.”
Jaylen chuckled at his joke and looked over at Jerome and shook his head which could be out of humor or disappointment. It was hard to tell. Jerome looked at him and moved aside some of his dreads.
“Why are you always making jokes?”
         “Uh, I don't know, because they're funny?”
         “But I feel like there's a reason.”
“What? You think I'm going to vent to you?”
“You don't have to. I'm just saying I'm here for you.”
Jaylen nodded and looked down. He's never talked about his feelings before, but if he had to tell someone it would be Jerome. After fiddling with his dry fingers, he spoke.
“Well… I like making jokes because it feels better than being sad. I guess it's a coping mechanism. I'm actually not that happy, I guess? I hate the fact that I act like I've got everything together when I don't even know if I like myself. My dad and mom got a divorce. My mom didn't really… like me. She left because of me. I don't understand why. She loves Bonnie, but because of me, she's left. Now dad’s upset and Bonnie thinks Mom doesn't love her. And I'm still single!”
Jerome was looking at Jaylen the whole time with an empathetic expression until the last sentence. A small smile appeared on his face while he spoke softly to Jaylen.
“Yeah, Jaylen, I notice how you always crack a joke during a serious conversation.”
“I just- people stop hanging out with you if you stop being fun.”
“Dude, you don't gotta entertain me. I like seeing you be comfortable like this. I'm here for you, not the jokes.”
Jaylen stared at Jerome. He didn't want to. He tried to hold them back but the tears came before he could think. He looked away and wiped a tear away before turning back to Jerome.
“I don't want to seem like a little girl, but man, can I get a hug?”
Jerome chuckled and opened an arm out. Jaylen wrapped his arms around Jerome. Jerome's slender arm rested around Jaylen's shoulder. At this moment, Jaylen felt nice. They pulled back and Jerome settled down.
         “Can I confess something?”
Jaylen gasped. “Really!? You're going to open up to me?”
“Don't get too excited. The only person who knows this is Tyler. Which we all know is understandable. Anyway…”
“I'm listening, dude, don't worry, I won't make any jokes.”
“Thank you. Don't ever tell Ian and Landon. I'm cooked if they ever find out but ah… I'm pan. I like women, but I'd also date a man and non-binary.”
Jaylen's jaw dropped. That seemed to make Jerome feel uncomfortable. Jaylen's silence was loud.
“Oh- oh dude that's- that's alright. That's cool. You're on another level of “I don't care” to the point where you don't care about the gender.”
Jerome let out a small sigh of relief. “I thought you said you wouldn't joke? It's okay, it was a good one. Thank you for not… seeing me any less.”
         “Nah, dude, you're chill.”
Jaylen chuckled. Jerome's own laugh filled the air. Seeing the nonchalant dude smile and laugh was a good change. It made Jaylen happy to see the dude happy. Today really was a good day.

5:37 pm

Tyler picked Jaylen up from the park. Jerome said he had stuff to do at home so he didn't get to ride with them. The car ride wasn't exciting. Tyler and Jaylen mostly listened to Eminem while they rode. Once at Tyler's house, Jaylen apparently had to help set up. So lame.
Tyler instructed Jaylen to set up tables outside by the pool while Tyler grabbed all the games from his attic. They set the games out then grabbed all his snacks from the kitchen. There were two boxes of chips, a bunch of soda and that's all that was important to Jaylen to remember.
Tyler smiled at them all like the goody two shoes host he is.
“Welcome! You’re all a little early.”
“Yeah, well, I heard the game was going to be on early today, so I had to be too!” shouted one of the guys. He walked over to a lawn chair and sat on it. Jaylen recognized some kid named Aiden who dabbed up Jaylen.
         “What'd up, dude!”
         “What's up!”
“Come on, help me set out these damn cups.”

It didn’t take long for people to show up. Jaylen didn't pay attention as to how long it took for people to arrive. All he remembers was seeing Wendy with her friends and getting Jerome at the gate. Tyler lingered with them for a bit, but he wasn't paying much attention.
“I saw this spider in Tyler's attic. It looked like it had balls on its back,” Jaylen snickered. Jerome smiled slightly and shook his head.
         “You're so immature.”
“I got you to smile though!”
Jaylen laughed and celebrated. He walked with Jerome to one of the tables and got himself a cup of DrPepper. Jerome got himself Fanta.
“Fanta? Really? Not Coke or Mountain Dew?”
         “I like Fanta.”
“Fanta. Hmm, hey Jerome, I'm a rather big Fanta you,” Jaylen laughed at his own joke. He went on for a minute before dying down. “Funny?”
         “No.”
Jaylen chuckled. He totally found it funny. Jaylen looked over and smirked. He saw Wendy in the distance. He started to walk over there when he stopped. Wendy was hanging out with some other guy. A small frown appeared on his lips. Maybe his friends were right. Wendy wouldn't ever love him.
Jaylen looked back when he felt a nudge from Jerome. There was some Fanta by his feet.
“Dude, don't worry about Wendy. She'll die by 39 anyway. Also, could you get me some paper towels?”
         Jaylen smiled again. “Yeah dude.”
Jaylen turned and jogged towards Tyler's house. He walked inside confidently when he stopped dead in his tracks. On the ground were Elizabeth and Isaiah’s dead bodies. A horrid gasp left Jaylen's lips as he almost broke his ankle turning around. He ran outside, pushing aside a useless pot plant.
“Everyone, stop! Isaiah and Elizabeth are dead!”

8:26 pm

Jaylen got knocked to the side a couple times by people running. Jaylen rushed to look for Wendy, Landon, or Jerome, someone. Wendy was long gone. Landon was climbing out of the pool. But Jaylen mainly looked for Jerome. He found him rather quickly. He was helping people leave the party. Jaylen stopped by him panting.
“I don't know- I saw the bodies- and- and I'm freaking out. Isaiah is dead! And I-”
“Woah, woah, woah, calm down. It's going to be okay. Come on.” Jerome walked with Jaylen out of the backyard, trying to calm down his hyperventilating. They sat down on the sidewalk for a little bit until police arrived. After that, Tyler rode with them to Jaylen's house. Tyler seemed a little out of it, unable to process anything. Bonnie walked up to them with a curious expression.
“Why are you mad? Is it because mommy loves me and not you?”
When she said that, Jaylen got mad.
“You idiot sister! Why don't you ever shut up and mind your business!?” Jaylen yelled. When Bonnie's eyes welled up with tears and she ran away, Jaylen felt a little guilty. A couple minutes later his dad came into the room and scolded him. That only made Jaylen even more mad. He's just witnessed his friend and his girlfriend dead. Of course he's going to be upset. Jaylen stormed up to his room and called Jerome, seeking comfort. Tyler was too busy with his sister and trying to calm himself down.

12:05 am Wednesday May

The next couple weeks were somewhat difficult. Jaylen was never close with Isaiah or Elizabeth. And that's the part he felt guilty about. Maybe he should've spent more time with the guy or some more for him. Jaylen hasn't been able to play COD or any games like that. Seeing the bodies in the game and killing people in them just kept reminding Jaylen of what he saw on that night. Jaylen tried to keep the mood up and make jokes, but his lines didn't punch like they usually did. Sitting across from Tyler with Alice at the lunch table was different. Isaiah usually sat there and talked about himself. He was fun to listen to but now he wasn't here, but now that he was gone, Jerome sat with them. That was the only plus he saw.
“Sucks, who will Wendy share her vapes with?”
Jerome shoved him in the side. Jaylen winched.
“She hangs out with Teigen now instead of me. So, I don't have any friends.”
Tyler gave Alice a small kiss on the forehead. A small sigh left Jaylen's lips. He could've had that with Wendy. Tyler and Alice were distracted and Landon and Ian were distracted so Jaylen turned to Jerome.
“Dude, ever since the night when they died, I haven't been able to play COD or anything. So instead of playing and losing sleep, I'm just losing sleep.”
Jerome shrugged.”It'd be alright. You'll get back to playing COD eventually. Until then I'll play Minecraft with your lame ass.”
Jaylen chuckled and smiled. These past couple days Jaylen felt more closer to Jerome and saw him as one of his best friends. After all, Jaylen was one of the two people who knew about Jerome being pan. Knowing that secret felt like an honor. Jaylen was going to protect it with his life. Jaylen finished his laugh and just stared at Jerome. Suddenly he felt something in his stomach. He didn't understand what it was but he kept his focus on his best friend. Jerome's small slightly noticeable smile could wipe away any image of Isaiah dead on the ground.
