Blood Brothers

Two brothers, a drone, and a lie. A hollowed-out village’s name whispers the truth.

They were brothers in spirit; Russo-Ukrainians. They married two Tatar cousins, both capable and fair; they filled the world with brats. They lived poor but unified, sharing fragrant makhorka and harsh barley vodka.

Then came the bitter years; the Generals strung barbed wire between them, dressing them in khaki to devour one another.

Their families hid them, but the artillery had already ruined the land. The church belfry stood half-shattered, the school was ashes; this was no life.

One summer twilight, laughing loudly, they stepped onto the porch for a smoke. The air was sweet and the bottle half-empty when the devil took them.

It was an American-made drone that vaporized them. “The Herald,” however, reported deaths from a treacherous Russian strike against civilians in Grazhdanskaya*, Ukraine.

“Αδελφοποιτοί”, μια ιστορία με 121 λέξεις ακριβώς: ούτε μία παραπάνω ούτε μία παρακάτω ούτε μία παραδίπλα:

Φίλοι αδερφικοί ήτανε· Ρωσο-ουκρανοί. Παντρευτήκανε δυο πρωτοξαδερφούλες Τατάρες, προκομένες, η μια ομορφότερη απ’ την άλλην· γεμίσανε τον κόσμο με κουτσούβελα. Ζούσανε φτωχικά μα μονιασμένοι, με μυρωδάτη μαχόρκα και στιφή βότκα από κριθάρι.

Μετά ήρθανε δίσεκτοι καιροί· οι Στρατηγοί απλώσανε συρματοπλέγματα ανάμεσά τους, να τους ντύσουν στο χακί, ν’ αλληλοφαγωθούνε.

Λιποτάχτησαν· η οικογένεια τους προστάτευσε, μα το πυροβολικό είχε κάνει ρημαδιό τον τόπο. Το καμπαναριό της εκκλησίας μισογκρεμισμένο, το σχολειό αποκαΐδια· δεν ήταν ζωή αυτή.

Ένα καλοκαιρινό σούρουπο, γελώντας δυνατά, βγήκαν στο χαγιάτι για τσιγάρο. Ο καιρός ήταν γλυκός κι η μποτίλια μισοτελειωμένη όταν τους πήρε ο διάολος.

Ήταν αμερικανικής κατασκευής ο δρόνος που τους εξαέρωσε. Ο “Κήρυκας”, ωστόσο, έγραψε για νεκρούς από ύπουλη ρωσική επίθεση κατά αμάχων στη Γκραζντάσκαγια* της Ουκρανίας.
