German Change of Years

What a "Kater"-bugged brain can come up with when it only snuffs up enough caffeine and sugar is amazing.*Rolling* Hopefully, this Word Search will bring across how Germans "es krachen lassen" when there's only a decent reason... or just a reason.*Laugh*

As always, some new "vocabulary" for you.

And now...

Frohes Neues Jahr and Viel Spaß!*Fireworks4* *Fireworks6* *Bottle2* *Glass4*

anstoßen => clink glasses at 12 AM, Jan 1

Bleigießen => lead-pouring OR: "telling fortune by the shape made by molten lead dropped into cold water". You melt the lead on a spoon. Probably not done so much nowadays because of health or environment worries. I did it last time with the family in 2009/2010.

böllern => set / let off fireworks

"Champagner" => champagne. But usually we stoßen an with sparkling wine or Crémant. (*ExclaimR*A sparkling wine may ONLY be called "champagne" when it's from the French region of Champagne*ExclaimR*)

Dinner For One => an actually GERMAN sketch produced in English, though, which aired in 1961, and follows Ms. Sophie through the evening, who's celebrates her 90th birthday, and Butler James who must "sub for" all her four deceased – and VERY hard-drinking – suitors. *Rolling* An absolute MUST! BUT: there are also some region-specific adaptions from all corners of Germany... and, of course, the one from Cologne is the funniest.*Rolling* (Here, „Frau“ Annette Author IconMail Icon celebrates her Big day. In case you wondered about the „nickname“ I gave you*Wink*) => https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinner_for_One

feiern => partying with *Hug1**Smile**Hug2*family & friends*HeartRate1*

feuchtfröhlich => the ideal vibe of a Silvesterparty, usually beer-induced.*Angelic*

Feuerwerk => Fireworks

Feuerwerkskörper => everything from firecrackers to fireworks batteries to New Year's rockets

Fondue => usually meat fondue.*Idea* Meats: beef, pork, chicken. With sauces, like curry, sour cream, cocktail. My last fondue is some time ago and was in 2009/10, too, together with my parents, Großmama, my uncle and aunt. Veeeery yummy.*StarStruck* *Hungry*

Gute Vorsätze => New Year's Resolutions... of course they're always good.*Angelic*

Jahreswechsel => turn of the year

Kater => literally = "male cat" In THIS context = hangover

Katerfrühstück => the breakfast on New Year which is usually savory to "soak up" the alcohol that was "poured in" the night before.*Laugh* I spent today's Katerfrühstück with my friend Marina, and the neighborhood, helping her prepare food for 15 people.*Shock2* A typical Katerfrühstück contains hefty stuff, like fish dishes (herring salad, rollmops, etc.), eggs w/ bacon, etc. Drinks are caffeine-"infusion", juice, water... some more "Schampus"*Rolling* *Angelic*

Mitternacht => midnight, turn of years

Neujahr => New Year

Neujahrsansprache => New Year's Addresses by Bundespräsident, Bundeskanzler + governor of your respective Bundesland. Laaaangweilig!*Yawn*

Neujahrsbrezel => okay, that one's not as boring as the previous one.*Rolling* Classically, it's a GIGANTIC yeast pretzel, that weighs 1 kg / 2+ lb., and is also often eaten on New year's day breakfast. Stupid enough NOT in the Saarland, where I spent Silvester and the Katerfrühstück. BUT: when I was a kid, we ALWAYS ate one for breakfast.*HeartRate1* And they're eaten here in Luxembourg, and tomorrow morning I'll get one from the bakery down the street for breakfast – not the BIG shot, though*Shock2*, but a normal-sized (about 1/4 of the "big shot") one.*Hungry* To get an idea (it's not the classic) => "32. NEW ROOT: Luxembourgish BretzelOpen in new Window.

Neujahrscountdown => everyone loudly counting down from 10 to the New Year

Raclette => people sit around an oven/grill-like center device, put various toppings (cheese, vegs, etc.) on small pans which can be slid into the center device and are cooked/grilled... for those who don't know it. It's wildly popular, but I'm more the Fondue-type.*RollEyes*

"Raketenabschussrampe" => literal = rocket/missile launchpad. In THIS context = empty Schampus/Prosecco-bottles (Nothing smaller as these are too unstable to support launching firework rockets.*ExclaimR*

Schädel => literal = skull In THIS context = the skull-splitting headache often accompanying the Kater*Sick* There's even a comparative comparison = RIESEN-(gigantic)-schädel (often used in the Southern regions of Germany, where I grew up)

Silvester => New Year's Eve; derived from Pope Silvester I. who died on December 31, 335 after serving 20 years as pope.

Silvesterparty => self-evident.*Rolling*
