“Hello?’ Frank Walters speaking.

“Mr Walters? This is the Doctor's office. Are you ready for your telephone consult?. The doctor will be with you in a moment. Please hold the line.”

“Frank? This is Dr Spencer How are you today?”

“Hi, Doc. I’m ok.”

“Have you been outside your front door, yet?”

“I tried—I really did.”

“Come on, Frank, we’ve spoken at length about this.”

“I’m sorry, Doc. But each time I go to my door I get the same feeling in my head.”

“What’s that, Frank?”

“It’s the voice. It’s says the same thing over again.”

“What’s it saying, Frank?”

“Don’t go out there!”

“What do you think is out there, in the hall, outside your door?”

“Probably nothing.”

“Yes, you’re right. It’s the agoraphobia talking. Shall we go through the exercises again?”

“I did just as you said. I went through the steps and they were working. I even got as far as putting my hand on the door handle but I just couldn’t go.”

“It’s been three years since you went outside. You’ve looked outside through your window, seen the blue sky, even watched the birds building a nest. There’s nothing to be afraid of Frank.”

“I know, Doc. I’m sorry.”

“We were going to do it together today, remember. Just open the door.”

“Okay, Doc. “I’ve opened it.”

“Good job. Now step through the door.”

“I’m doing it!”

“That’s it. I’m with you. Take a step through the gate, just one step at a time.”

“I’ve done it, Doc!”

“Great! I’m proud of you. — Frank! What was that? Are you there, Frank? What’s happening? Speak to me!”
