a man sacrifices his humanity for eternal love. |
| Listening to her wrist, Douglas smiled at her. "I hear your heartbeat." He smoothed her hair on her head. Daphne smiled at him and held her hand to his chest. "I feel yours." "Do you feel how much I love you?" Daphne cocked her head to the side, her eyes wide. "I feel your love?" Douglas grasped her hand and shoved her palm towards his chest again. "Do you feel my heart beating for you alone?" "Douglas, what are you getting at? I know you love me." "Daphne, did you know how much I loved you when you went to lunch with Peter?" His grip was hard as iron and he didn't release her wrist. "It was a business lunch! I know you love me. I love you tool" She wrenched her wrist away from him and scanned the park around the bench. No one was paying them any notice. "You love me?" He spat, " Why do you spend Thursday evenings with Victor?" "He's a friend, we work late on Thursdays so I can have all of Friday off to be with you." "He doesn't love you like I do. He wouldn't do the things for you that I am willing to do. I moved across so many lines to be with you. Time, space, mortality, all of them I have shunned. I love you and always have, I always will." Daphne pulled away from him some. She'd never seen him this way. His eyes were open, wild. "I had one year to prove your love was as strong as mine, for you to give me your heart. All I can think is that in our time together, I have yet to truly give you mine." He tore open his shirt, buttons flew everywhere. Daphne stared at his chest, the one she caressed and kissed so many times. "Close your shirt! We're in public." Before her eyes, his right hand turned gray and his fingers elongated. It looked like he had stolen the clawed forearm of a granite gargoyle. " Where did that claw come from? What are you?" Her eyes darted around. There was no one in the vicinity anymore. "I had to sacrifice my humanity to be with you." He centered his outstretched claws over his chest. " Now I sacrifice my heart!" The talons dug into his flesh. They tore through his ribs his muscles closing around his beating heart. He ripped it from his chest. And held it out to her with a twisted grotesque smile on his face. "Oh, my god!" Daphne hissed. His chest only slightly oozed blood. His heartbeat strongly squirted blood with every pulse. The blood pooled on the picnic blanket beneath them. He gestured loosely for her to take his heart. " You're literally handing me your heart!" "Yes." Daphne stared at it then slowly raised her hands to accept the gift. Douglas smiled icily, completely unfazed by the hole in his chest. She took the heart and could feel it beating in her hands. The stoney appearance of his hand had spread to his chest and now covered most of his torso. It didn't seem to pain him in the least. Douglas' smile broadened and he began to reach for her, "Now give me yours!" 546 words. prompt ▶︎ |
