Tell us about something you think is terribly unfair and explain how you would rectify it.

How can I choose one injustice to rectify when the world is overflowing with injustice? Injustice can be likened to the Lernaean Hydra,1 when you cut off one head of this chthonic2 creature two more grow in its place. In order to destroy the Hydra of Injustice you have to you have to cut off all its heads and cauterize them as you decapitate the creature. By cauterizing the neck of the creature you cut off its blood supply (the root cause) to its head or the visible manifestation of injustice.

I believe the root cause of injustice (in all its forms) is prejudice of some type. In order to rectify an injustice you have destroy the root of prejudice, which is difficult because humans instinctively fear what they do not know or understand. Laws can go a long way to rectify injustice, but no law can destroy the root cause of the injustice because that cause is hidden under the surface in the chthonic regions of the human psyche. One of the causes of prejudice may be humanity's xenophobic3 tendency to fear anything that may be foreign or strange, which could be the cause of a person's insecurities. The best way to deal with this is to teach or give permission to individuals to question their own belief systems and ask why.

Why? Is the most dangerous question that an individual can ask him or herself because ultimately it reveals the reason a person holds specific prejudices. Once the reason for holding any prejudgment is revealed then the person can deal with that prejudice on an individual leave and overcome it (if the person chooses to do so). Learning the reason for holding a prejudice put the responsibility of dealing with that prejudice, and the injustice it generates, on the shoulders of the individual. After a human being reaches the age of maturity, It is his or her responsibility to overcome any prejudices or insecurity hiding under the surface of the individual's actions.

Quote of the Day: "I'm interested in the fact that the less secure a man is, the more likely he is to have extreme prejudice." - Clint Eastwood

Blog. Tell us about your week. Include your favorite blog entry from your fellow challengers from the preceding week and, most importantly, why.

I think my week went as well as can be expected under the circumstances and it may have went better then I think it did. I did some port housekeeping by cleaning and I set up the folder "NaNoWriMo 2020 and the book "Invalid Item. Since I have no idea what I'm going to call the novel, I haven't started the book for that yet. This year I have to beat my last year's word count of 47,971. I still have that novel to finish, but I think I want to work on a different novel this year.

I feel as if I am coming out of a fog. I looked at my word count for last year and wondered why I did not complete the novel. Then it hit me, Mom died on November 29, 2012 and that was why I did not finish "The Typewriter. It took me about five minutes to realize that on September 29 Mom will have been dead ten months. I feel as if I woke up from a dream and found myself on another planet or in another country, which may not be a bad plot for a novel. At this moment, I am wondering if I should change the genre of the upcoming novel and use my experience taking care of Mom as the premise. Is it too soon after her death to consider writing a novel about it? I wonder.

I have eight days to decide on the premise of the novel. In eight days, the "October Novel Prep Challenge begins. I should have some idea of the premise before October 1. This is the first time I have considered writing about the experience of a caregiver. I have been racking my brain for a plot and a story title. Maybe writing a novel about care-giving would be good therapy. Maybe it would be a good way to remember Mama. Maybe it would... I can come up with all sorts of maybes, but maybes do not make decisions. The only thing maybes can do is confuse the issue and cause me to postpone deciding on a novel premise and plot.

Where do your ideas for writing projects come from? Do you have a muse who is constantly generating ideas or one who only pops fragments of ideas into your head at seemingly random times? Sit quietly for five minutes and just let your mind wander. Then, take a couple minutes to tell us where your mind took you.

Random though flow through my mind
visions of world and people I have never met,
questions about recyclable Saturday
(was it last week or is it today).

Birds fly past my window,
I wonder where they are going
are they returning to their nest
or hunting food.

My mind and muse wander
across a green landscape wondering
about concepts of God
and the expanding universe.

I inhale the aroma
of freshly brewed coffee
and I sip hot black coffee
from one of my favorite cups;
the tastes aroused memories
of my childhood
and my grandfather's cowboy coffee,
which I was allowed to drink
with lots of cream and sugar added.

God's Most Great Name
reverberates through my mind
and tranquility
settles upon my wandering thoughts
and my wondering mind:
I realize
that the Glory of God is my muse
and God's Most Great Spirit
generates my creativity.

Thought of the Day: “The ‘Muse’ is not an artistic mystery, but a mathematical equation. The gift are those ideas you think of as you drift to sleep. The giver is that one you think of when you first awake.” ― Roman Payne

Let's play the old game- If you take five things to a desert island, what would they be? Why these 5 things?
Now, imagine yourself there six months later. Which things would still be awesome? Which things not so much?

*Check* Prayerbook
*Checkr* Coffee
*Checkg* Coffee pot
*Checkb* Solar powered oven4
*Checkv* Handheld recording device with solar battery and charger5

It is six months later, all my solar powered products are working, I am recording thoughts and poems. I am also in the process of memorizing every prayer in my prayerbook. I am out of coffee and going into caffeine withdrawal, so perhaps the coffee was not the ideal drink to bring with me. On the other hand, the coffee pot is helpful at collecting rainwater or boiling water to drink.

Write your own back-to-school instruction manual. It could be from a parent's POV or a student's. Maybe the lunch lady needs one. Play with the idea and see what happens.

Author Note: This manual is written from the point of view of a Doctoral student of the University of Hard Knocks.6 The goal of this author is to assist students just entering this Institute of Higher Learning in pursuit their degrees.

Part 1: Necessary Tools

*Check1* Faith either in a Higher Being, the generosity of the universe, or yourself. Remember that the universe is not necessarily out to get you, but to provide you soul and/or spirit with an education so that upon its graduation (death of the body) it will be prepared to advance into the next stage of its existence.

*Check2* A sense of humor, so that you can laugh at your own foibles or foolishness in the face of certain disaster.

*Check3* Intuition or gut feeling that guides you to take action "without fully understanding why".7

*Check4* Creativity which is your ability to consider new ideas, possibilities, or take different approaches to solve the problems and difficulties that you encounter each day.

*Check5* A first aid kit which includes a support system and necessary ointments, bandages, and other items to heal the bruises and wounds that are inflected on your body, mind, spirit, and ego. This is a necessary tool because all the classes at UHK are a mix of physical, spiritual, and mental instructions designed to impart life lessons to your spirit.

Part 2: Test Schedule

*Check* There will be one or more tests everyday beginning on the first day you enter UHK.

*Checkr* If you fail a test then you will have unlimited chances to pass it, but each time you retake the test it will become more difficult,

*Checkg* If you are having difficulty passing a test then go to your first aid kit and discuss it with your counselor.

*Checkb* At the end of each day or each test review what you have learned because you will need these facts in upcoming tests.

Part 3: Video

*Note0* This video is required view and should be reviewed at periodic intervals.

Part 4: Reading

*Note1* Any and all books that arouse the student's curiosity or are needed in any other schools are required reading.

Thought of the Day: "I, on the other hand, am a fully-rounded human being, with a degree from the University of Life, a diploma from the school of hard knocks, and three gold stars from the Kindergarten of Getting the shit Kicked Out of Me." - Rowan Atkinson

What is your opinion about how to handle WDC auction owners or donors who don't fulfill their pledges to the winning bidder?

I'm not sure how I would handle this, but I think I would take a the following approach.

Step 1: Check to see when the last time the person was online. Technology is wonderful when it works properly and the little hyperspace creatures don't interfere with a person's internet connection.

Step 2: Send a e-mail to the owner and/or the donor asking if there is a problem.

Step 3: Send an e-mail to a moderator with the pertinent information.

Include in the e-mails: The end of the auction and the steps you took to contact the owner and/or donor.

I'm not sure about the elapsed time between each step. I suppose that depends on when the activity ended and the winner was notified. These are my thoughts on the subject and not necessarily an opinion.

Which of the seven deadly sins are you most likely to commit?

Before I could respond to this prompt, I had to Google the seven deadly sins because I had forgotten what their names. According to the website Freedom of Faith, the these sins are (1) Lust, (2) Gluttony, (3) Greed, (4) Sloth, (5) Wrath, (6) Envy, and (6) Pride.8 As a 66 year old human being, I have probably committed, at one time or another in my life, all of these sins. My most recent encounter was with gluttony.

This week I ate an entire medium or large pizza by myself in one setting. Since I still have another pizza, of the same size, in my freezer I expect to commit the sin of gluttony again this weekend. Another of the sins, I have committed in recent years is sloth, which I normally have difficulty with when it comes to housekeeping. Of the two, the one I am most likely to commit is sloth, but gluttony runs a close second.

The seven deadly sins
are normal human weaknesses
taken to the extreme.

Each day
each individual
must considered
the degree
to which he or she
has committed one or more these sins,
why each sin was committed,
and how to correct that behavior.

Thought of the Day: "Confess your sins to the Lord and you will be forgiven; confess them to man and you will be laughed at." - Josh Billings

If you could see yourself ten years in the future, would you?

Would I like to see myself in 2023? There are some mornings in 2013 that I get up and dread looking in the mirror because I don't want to see myself in 2013. In ten years, I will be 76 years old. Today I am thankful that ten years ago, at 56, I was unable to see myself at 66. No, I do not want to see myself in ten years because I do not want to know where I will be or what I will be doing. The reason for this is simple, I don't want to doing anything to screw up my happy or contented life in 2023, which is possible if I know what is going to happen and where I will be in ten years.

When it comes to the future, both my personal future and the future of humanity, I am an optimist. I believe that there are good things coming my way in the near future. I believe that my tomorrow will be better then my today or my yesterday. I want to continue believing that and, therefore, I don't want to see myself in ten, twenty, thirty, or forty years from today. While I don't want to see myself in ten years, I do want to find a way to increase the happiness I feel today, as well as that I will expect to experience in ten years. So I guess I should try experimenting with gratitude because expressing gratitude is supposed to increase a person's happiness.

Do you know the meaning of your name, and why your parents chose it? Do you think it suits you? What about your childrens names?

Am I experiencing déjà vu all over again? I remember encountering and responding to a similar prompt sometime in the past, but I am not complaining because this gives me a chance to look at this from a new perspective. It also gives me a chance to complicate or uncomplicate the issues of the meaning of my last name.

Do I know the meaning of my name? Two yeses and a no. I know the meaning of my first and middle names, but I am unsure about the meaning of my last name. My first name is Neva, which means Snow. My middle name is Florence and it means Prosperous. Now I come to my last name Darbe, which is the complicated part and the meaning become somewhat foggy. I have heard several different meanings for this name, which is a derivative of the name Darby.

I once heard it meant Where the Wild Things Live. I was also told that it mean Bum, in this case, referring to a vagrant or tramp. My latest research informs me that it is derived from the old Norse words "djur", meaning deer, and "byr", which is defined as "farm or settlement".9 Therefore the meaning of my full name is one of the following:

Snow Prosperous Where the Wild Things Live
Snow Prosperous Bum
Snow Prosperous Deer Farm
Snow Prosperous Deer Settlement

What memories does your bicycle have for you?

I remember my birthday bike,
I graduated to it from a trike.

I'm not sure which birthday I received the bicycle. I was either seven or eight years old. I thought I was a big girl because I graduated from three wheels to two wheels. Of course, it was much more difficult to ride on two wheels then three wheels, but eventually I learned to balance. That was one of my biggest accomplishments up to that point. It is interesting that I learned to balance a bike, but in all the years I worked as a food server I could never learn to balance a food serving tray.

Bicycle memories

I remember my birthday bike,
The first time I rode I yelled whoopee,
I graduated to it from a trike.

I thought my bike the most beautiful sight,
I was happy to be me,
I remember my birthday bike,

To school I did not have to hike,
I went on a riding spree,
I graduated to it from a trike.

Once I rode the bike at night,
I fell off and skinned my knee.
I remember my birthday bike,

When riding I was a joyful sight.
I felt like I was free.
I remember my birthday bike,

That blue bike I really liked,
I rode with abandoned glee,
I remember my birthday bike,
I graduated to it from a trike.

If Writing.com went offline (forever) tomorrow, how would you cope? What would you miss most?

Waking up without writing.com is like waking up in a nightmare. Of all the ifs or what ifs that could happen this is the most terrifying. This is the worst case scenario I fear will happen, but don't really believe is going to occur, at least not in my lifetime. This is the blog prompt that sends chills up my spine. This is the dream that wakes me screaming in the middle of the night.

How would I cope? I would start an online group called Mourning Writing.com. It would be open to every member, former member, and potential member. I have found, for myself anyway, that the best way to deal with the death of a loved one is to discuss it with others who are going through a similar experience. If writing.com were to go offline tomorrow, it would feel as if I had lost someone or something dearly love.

Mourning Writing.com would help its members cope with the five stages of grief: (1) "Denial and Isolation", (2) "Anger", (3) "Bargaining", (4) "Depression", and (5) "Acceptance".10 Each individual's lose is a personal experience, but having someone or some place to go to discuss or write about the loss gives the individual support during the grieving process.

"Deep, dark depression, excessive misery"11
I no longer have a place to write,
I break into a cold sweat and get dizzy,
When I wake up in the middle of the night,
Terrified that I might not find a place to write.

Eventually, my nightmare would end. Eventually, I would move on and find somewhere to post my writing and receive reviews, but it would be difficult. It would be like learning to trust love again after a romance suddenly and without warning ended. Eventually, grieving and mourning are transformed into a new reality and becomes a sweet memory in a new life.

Thought of the Day: “Someday you're gonna look back on this moment of your life as such a sweet time of grieving. You'll see that you were in mourning and your heart was broken, but your life was changing...” - Elizabeth Gilbert

All though sometimes my weeks get a bit nutty, most of them wouldn't fit in nutshell. This week especially, I don't like to complain, but their isn't enough days in my week to accomplish everything I need to accomplish. Then there is the problems of waiting in line, especially when I have to get in line two hours ahead of time to be one of the first 40 people in line; all though, I think 20 lbs. of free food is probably worth it. I will not have to worry about food and opening cans for a while.

This month the two hour wait was worth it because when I went to pick up the food one of the employees did a cooking demonstration and those attending got a small bowl of cabbage soup. In addition, since I was one of the first nine people in line and I had a car, I was able to get a 36-pack of 12 oz soda free. It was diet soda, which I normally do not purchase, but it was free and I didn't think I was going to be able to purchase any soda this month (even with the coupons). Write a fictional story or poem about someone being late. The more outrageous you can make it, the better *Smile*

"I'm late, I'm late for a very important date, with a Death by Chocolate Cake!" Shouted Harvey, Alice's giant white rabbit housemate, as he ran past her and out the front door.

"I wonder," said Alice pushing herself out of her recliner and sashaying to the front door. "If I should tell him that chocolate isn't good for rabbits." She stood at the open door watching as he transformed from a rabbit into a lavender unicorn with a rainbow colored horn. "And I don't think its good for unicorns either," she closed the door and went back to her recliner.

Outside, Harvey turned east and galloped toward the intersection of Wonderland Way and Mad Hatter Avenue. He knew he would have to hurry or he wouldn't reach the March Hare's restaurant before the Caterpillar turned into Bread-and-Butterflies. However, when he reached Mad Hatter Avenue he had to stop because the Queen and King of Hearts had their army of playing cards lined up behind the Mock Turtle who was in a deep philosophical discussion with Bill the Lizard and the Gryphon. They were arguing over the proper way to drink violet rose tea.

The Mock Turtle thought it should be sipped hot without the accompaniment of cream or sugar. The Gryphon, on the other hand, said it tasted better cold or poured into a large bowl of snow ice cream and then sprinkled with stardust. Bill the Lizard thought they were both crazy because he liked his violet rose tea gulped from a fruit jar with a splash of Jack Daniels and a shot of Jim Bean.

The Knave of Hearts, at the direction of the Duchess, had set up a card table and was in the process of placing all the ingredients for making the tea and mixing the drinks on the table. With a deep sigh, Harvey turned back into a white rabbit. Then he approached one of the cards and tapped it on the shoulder. "Would Her Majesty mind if I crossed here, I have to be at the March Hare's restaurant by 1:00 PM and it is a quarter to one now."

"Give Queenie a couple of seconds," he winked. "Once she gets a shot of Jim Bean or a splash of Jack Daniels she doesn't care if the Dormouse runs up her skirts."

"Yep," said another card. "When she sips the sauce she starts acting like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum."

"What about His Royal Highness?" Harvey glanced at his watch and began sweating Crocodile tears.

"Him," laughed the cards. "The only thing that old fart wants to do when he's drunk is paint red roses white and white roses red."

Harvey knew that he would not get to the restaurant before 1:00 PM, if he did not take matters into his own hands. Shaking his head, he turned into a Jabberwock and chewed his way through the playing cards. Once across the street, he turned into a Rocking-horsefly and flew to the restaurant. At the March Hare's Restaurant, Harvey watched heartbroken as a flock of bread-and-butterflies landed on a pair of Borogoves and a herd of Silthy Troves. The only sympathy he received was a free piece of Death by Chocolate Cake.

Food for Thought: "In a deep metaphysical sense, all that is conditioned is illusory. All phenomena are literally 'appearances,' the outer masks in which the One Reality shows itself forth in our changing universe. The more 'material' and solid the appearance, the further is it from reality, and therefore the more illusory it is." - Annie Besant

What was your worst subject in school?

I survived mathematics! I got through all of my math classes with passing grades, but just barely. I can add one plus one and come up with the right answer. I can balance a check book and I can set up a an income-outgo spreadsheet. I have difficulty living within a budget, but I can balance my monthly books as long as I don't spend cash. The problem occurs when I receive change for an item.

I get the proper amount of change back when I spend the cash. I put the change and the receipt in my purse. The issue comes in when I go to put the amount I spent in my spreadsheet. I cannot remember the cost of the item (which is why I kept the receipt), but when I go to my purse one of two things happens. First, nine times out ten I can't find the receipt which was in my purse with the change. The change is still there, but the receipt is nowhere to be found. Second, if I can find the receipt then at the end of the month when I go to count the change in my purse, I come up short. There are, of course, several explanations for the missing receipt or the missing change. The explanation I like best is that my purse has an interdenominational portal and the receipt or the change slips through and is somewhere living happily in another denomination.

I survived my worst class in school. I survived mathematics. I am thankful that the only math I have to do down is keeping track of my money, which is difficult if I spend cash. This is why I have a debit card and use it whenever I am comfortable with the merchant I am doing business with. This means the grocery store I shop at frequently, one gas station, my doctor's office, and government offices. If I shop anywhere else, I go to the ATM and withdraw cash, which I try to avoid doing because spending cash screws up my books.

Thought of the Day: "Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater." - Albert Einstein

Find a story in the news from the past week and provide your opinion on it.

It was just a story in the news,
it never made much of a headline
at least not online.

Vital underground water found in arid north Kenya By Faith Karimi, CNN16

It was just a story in the news,
a small headline,
almost hidden from those not searching
for hope on this parched planet.

*Check* U.N identified five aquifers in Turkana
*Checkb* Two acquirers verified
*Checkg* Identified through the use of "advanced satellite exploration technology,"17
*Checkr* Verified through drilling
*Checkv* These aquifers are vital to Kenya's success and the survival of Turkana residence

This is an important story because it points out how technology is helping people in third world countries. It is important because it shows that technology, when used properly, can help humanity prosper and solve some of the problems confronting Earth today. This story should be on the front page of every newspaper in the world, but it is hidden headlines that show the chaos and terror that mankind is embroiled in. We need to see more stories about hope then about despair because hope increases our belief in a bright future for the human race.

Humanity will survive the crisis confront it today, but we need hope to help us hold on until the crisis ends. Headlines that point out positives occurring through the use of technology and individual actions help individuals hold onto hope. It is stories like this one that helps the individual human being hold onto hope. The following video is not about the discovery of the aquifers; rather it shows the importance of water in Turkana, Kenya.

Do you prefer soups or salads?

Soup or salad
the diner's dilemma:
Which goes better with scrambled eggs?

Salad is good with almost any food,
but sometimes I want
a bowl of Albondigas Soup
before I eat
my Fried Ice Cream.

I like green salad with my pasta
and sometimes with my eggs,
but Split Pea Soup is always good
with Country Fried Chicken.

Soup or salad
I can never decide
until I look at a restaurant's menu
because the one I chose
depends upon the main course
I am craving.

Do I prefer soups or salads? I like both soup and salad, which is one of the reasons I like buffets. At a buffet I can have a little bit of both without having to chose. At home, I normally eat one or the other depending on what I have in the refrigerator or in the pantry.

How much of yourself are you prepared to share in your blog? Or perhaps the better question is - what aren't you prepared to share in your blog?

What am I prepared to share? That depends on the day, my mood, the subject, and on which blog I am posting my comments or rants. There are, of course, some thing I am not prepared to share on my off sight blogs. There are some things I am not yet prepared to share on my writing.com blogs, unless I am in a "Deep, dark depression, excessive misery"18 mood and attempting to write my way out of it.

Since I have trust issues and an off line journal, I normally use it to write things I would not share online. Most of the time the off live journal writing works to change my mood, but there are times when I need to vent online. Those are the time I tend to post rants on my blogs. I do not like depression, so I attempt to write my way out of it in my off line journal; however, that has became more difficult since my mother's death. I have considered talking to my doctor about the problem and this is where my paranoia manifest itself. Since I do not want to take any more medication, my doctor would send me to a psychiatrist or psychologist, who would not doubt lock me away... all right, that is probably an overstatement.

I tend to look at the worst case scenario and figure that is what will happen. True this type of scenario seldom, if ever happens, but that does not prevent me from figuring out what it is and thing it will happen (at least as long as I am depressed). I write about these illusion in my off line journal because my trust issues do not allow me to share them online. So, I suppose the answer to the question is "Yes, there are some things I am not prepared to blog about.

Overcomer. Reflect on this.

1

I look in the mirror,
what do I see?
An overcomer's reality.

The gray hair and wisdom lines indicate
a life of tests and difficulties,
of wisdom acquired
one data bite at a time.

I look at the date,
what do I hear?
Memories of that fateful day and year.

2

I remember watching
in utter shock
as the towers crumbled to dust,
as survivors felt away
and first responders ran toward.

Has it been only 12 years,
since we watched
our world change forever?

Has it been only 12 years,
since we had to learn to overcome
the fear,
the terror,
and the aftershock
of destruction.

American survived
and overcame,
we are survivors,
we are overcomers:
we must never forget
the date
or the lessons learned.

3

Green is the color
of the overcomer,
of the survivor;
it signals us
to confidently advance into the future
knowing
we can overcome any barrier,
any fear,
any weakness
in our quest to achieve humanity's
ultimate destiny.

Thought of the Day: "We must become bigger than we have been: more courageous, greater in spirit, larger in outlook. We must become members of a new race, overcoming petty prejudice, owing our ultimate allegiance not to nations but to our fellow men within the human community." - Haile Selassie

Wildcard Monday Tuesday! You are living in a college dorm or apartment with a roommate. Are you the perfectionist or the slob? Or somewhere in between?
In this living situation, how do you cope with conflict?

I am not a Felix Unger,
I am more of an Oscar Madison.

I have finally came to grips
with my housekeeping weaknesses;
there will always be dust on the top of my bookcase,
I will always have dirty cloths waiting in the hamper,
I will always have sacks of trash to empty,
I will always have dishes soaking in the sink
because I forgot to rinse the supper dishes out
and the food dried overnight.

I am a slob,
a female version of Oscar Madison,
I sweep the floors every three or four days,
I mop the floors once a month
(if I am lucky and undistracted),
and I clean the toilet when it is necessary
(usually when I am expecting friends or family to drop by).

I do not need a roommate,
I do not need a dorm room
or apartment with multiple rooms.

I need a studio apartment,
for myself,
my pet rock,
and my plastic plant.

That way
I do not have to cope
with the conflict,
I do not have to beg forgiveness
on bended knees
(getting down on my knees
is almost impossible at my age),
I can ask my friends
and family to call before they visit,
so that I can clean the bathroom
and mop the floors.
