The October 12, 2013 prompt for "Blogging Circle of Friends Prompt Forum is
Dr. Seuss loves fried green eggs and ham, what's your favorite breakfast? Are you going out? Or cooking it yourself?

I will eat almost anything for breakfast that has hot sauce on it. I don't intentionally put hot sauce on my pancakes (hotcakes), but accidents happen when I am having breakfast in a restaurant or at home. Sometimes I get hot sauce on the pancakes and I eat them anyway. The sweetness of the syrup with hot sauce creates an interesting flavor, which I like, so I'm not sure why I've never intentionally put hot sauce on my hotcakes. I'll have to do that the next time I make or order pancakes.

This morning, I had fried eggs (not green) and two ground beef patties with hot sauce on them. I put the hot sauce on after I cooked them, but next time I think I will put the hot sauce on the beef patties while they are frying. I also had a cup of coffee and a glass of milk with Ovaltine®. About the only thing I won't eat for breakfast anymore is spaghetti pizza; that creative leftover cooking experiment didn't work out like I expected. I didn't put hot sauce on the spaghetti pizza, but I don't think it would have helped. Cheese didn't help the taste either, so I've decided that spaghetti and pizza are incompatible and, almost, unpalatable.

On the Menu for Later Today or Tomorrow
Chuck Flat Steak with Vegetable
or Chuck Flat Steak Stew

2 flat chuck steaks cooked in an electric skillet (I had to cook both steaks before I could refreeze one of them)
5 dashes of hot sauce on each side of each steak while they are cooking

Once the stakes were done, I removed them from the skillet but left the drippings. I put the steaks aside so that I could slice them into smaller pieces before I add them to the vegetables when they are done to my satisfaction. I don't know how long it takes to finish this recipe because this is the first time I've made it. I also don't know how many people it will serve, but since the steaks were in a family sized package and most families are four people or more I suspect it will make two to four meals.

1 medium sized red onion, diced
8 carrots washed, peeled, and sliced into small sections
84 too small to peel potatoes
4 cups of water

I turned the electric skillet back on, then I sliced and diced the onion before putting it into the skillet. Next I washed, peeled and sliced the carrots. After add the carrots I put two cups of water into the skillet. I washed the potatoes and placed them into the skillet with the carrots and onion, next I added two more cups of water and put the lid on the skillet. After that, I turned the skillet up to medium so that the veggies could cook.

Once the carrots and potatoes are done, I will add a one or two cans of peas and possibly a couple of cans of corn. I don't know yet because I will not add any canned vegetables until after I have cut up the steak and returned it to the stew. Every item I used in this recipe, except for the hot sauce, I received from one of the food pantries that give food to senior citizens.

October 11 is "It's My Party Day". What are you celebrating?

It's my party day,
I'm too tired to party,
so I'll quietly celebrate
the bounty of fall.

I'm too tired to party because this morning I waited in line for two or three hours to pick up two pounds of food at one of the food pantries in Las Vegas. It was worth the wait and the weariness. I received a dozen eggs, some full cooked frozen sausage patties, a glass jar of pasta sauce (the pasta sauces in the glass jars are better those that in the cans), and several other food items that are too expensive for me to purchase at the grocery store.

I'm too tired to party,
but I'll cook myself a feast
fit for a queen.

I was able to get some small potatoes, carrots, an onion, and a large flat piece of beef that looks like some type of roast. The meat will fit in my electric skillet, so I can put it on in the morning. Then I will cut up the carrots, the onion, and wash the potatoes before adding those to the skillet. It will take all day for it to cook, but that is all right. I can have it for supper tomorrow and all day on Sunday.

I'm too tired to party
and too tired to think,
so I will count my blessing
while fixing something to eat.

Some make it happen, some let it happen, some wonder what happened. Who are you?

Some make it happen, some let it happen, some wonder what happened. Who are you? That statement suggests that we, as human beings, have control over what happens to us and the world around us. After 66 years, I have come to the conclusion that we do not have complete control over the events in our lives or in the world we inhabit. We, as individual human beings, do have some control over the things that happen, but it is very little control and it is only in specific situations. Most of the time events are not in or under our control, at those times the only thing we can control is our emotions and our reactions to the events.

As individuals, we can stand up for ourselves and others when the situation is unjust. We can state our desires and needs, while making an attempt to fulfill and accomplish them within the limits of our abilities. We cannot always make anything happen no matter how hard we try or how much we want something to occur. We can join with others who are aligned with our desires or needs and assist them while we are attempting to accomplish our own ends. As human beings, we have to work together to get anything worthwhile accomplished.

When it come to making something happen, the most important component is cooperation and not individual desire. Humans area social species, so it is important for us to work together to accomplish anything. If the individual attempts making something happen, without the help of other people, he or she is doomed to failure. After that tirade, my answer to the question is that I am an one of those people who assist other people in making it happen.

Thought of the Day:
No Man Is An Island1

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
John Donne

Last week was an interesting week. I spent some of it dawdling, but the entire week was not wasted. I accomplished all the "October Novel Prep Challenge before they were due, all though I had to get up early this morning to complete the story in order to submit it before 8:59 Pacific time today. I seemed to run out of steam on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning and I begin to dawdle. As a result, I did not accomplish my word count goal for two days.

I went to the grocery store on Friday to pick up a few things, while I was out I stopped at the bank and the gas station. I think I should have purchased more then $20.00 worth of gas, but that is all I withdrew from the bank. I use my debit card when I go to the grocery store and to the pharmacy because I have difficulty keeping track of cash. I am 66 years old, I will be 67 in December, you would think that by now I would be able to keep track of the cash I spend. That is not the case, unless I use a debit card, write a check, or take a specific amount out of the bank for gas. If I carry cash with me all the time, I do not know where I spend it. I suspect I would be better off living in a cashless society because I would know where my money went.

I need to to less dawdling this week because I have a lot more house cleaning to do between writing exercises. I seem to write, work, and feel better if I have something to focus my mind and thoughts. I think the old saying about idle hands being the devil's workshop was wrong. I think it is an unfocused mind that is the problem, at least it is with me. If I do not focus on something then my imagination runs away with me and I image all sorts of things.

Begin a story or poem with - I saw what you did last night.

I saw what you did last night,
as we walked in the moonlight
eating candy corn from a cornucopia.

You took a yellow, orange, and white kernel...
Since I cannot finish this rhyme, I am writing a story.

*Pumpkin* *Jackolantern* *Pumpkin*

I saw what you did last night, she said placing a cornucopia of candy corn on the table in front of me.

"What," I ask removing several yellow, orange, and white kernel from the horn of plenty.

"As we were trick or treating," she smiled. "You took a piece of candy corn and threw it on the ground in front of Jack's house."

"So what was wrong with that?"

"That piece of candy grew into a corn stalk reaching into the clouds."

"You mean instead of a bean stalk, I grew a corn stalk."

"Yes," she laughed. 'A corn stalk that is dropping candy corn all over town."

"Is there a problem with that?"

"Only if you eat the candy corn," she took a handfull of kernels from the cornucopia and gave it to the cat.

I watched as the cat grew bat wings and began to fly around the room. I tried to get up, but found my legs had turned to straw. I looked at my arms and hands only to see the arms of a scarecrow.

"Welcome to Halloween Town, Scarecrow." She ate a handful of kernels and turned into the Wicked Witch of the West.

It is Halloween night and all the lights go out. What do you hear?

On a moonless Halloween Night,
When the stars were shining bright,
Beyond the pollution of Las Vegas lights,
The city suddenly went dark.

A person can hear some really strange noises when the Lights in Las Vegas goes out . People just aren't used to living in the dark, at least not literally, all though I suspect many of the citizens and tourist live in a figurative darkness just managing a think grasp on sanity or reality. The complete darkness of a brownout or a blackout causes auditory hallucinations. You hear things that aren't there or normal noises are transformed into stalking monsters.

The neighbor's dog is barking
at the invisible new moon
I hope the lights come back on soon.

My neighbor's dog sounds really weird anyway and under the conditions of a brownout, he (or perhaps she) sounds like a squeaking vampire or fruit bat. It's disconcerting to hear something that sounds like Count Dracula on a feeding frenzy. Then there are the neighborhood cats that go into fighting mode when there is a blackout. I think darkness in the city must frighten animals used to a well lit or semi-well lit environment.

On a moonless Halloween night,
When the Strip light were shining bright,
Las Vegas suddenly went dark,
When my neighbor's dog began to bark
He sounded just like a screeching vampire bat

Then the black and white bob-tailed tom,
Began to sing his fighting song:
Was he challenging the dog to mortal combat?

On a moonless Halloween Night,
Strange noises can give me a fright,
Especially when the lights are out,
And my imagination is running about.

All of the power in the world goes out, including car engines. What changes in your life and how do you survive without electricity?

In a world without electricity,
there is still the power of faith,
of love,
of human ingenuity
and imagination.

In a world without electricity,
will poet's write odes to hot showers
and indoor toilets?

In a world without electricity,
humanity learns to cope,
to live,
without technological devices
and to use the proximity
of another human being
to keep warm
on freezing winter nights.

In a world without electricity,
we dig latrines,
build bonfires,
cut wood for cooking our meals,
and curse
the lack of indoor plumbing.

In a world without electricity,
we station soldiers
around libraries
to protect the precious books
from illiterate looters.

In a world without electricity,
nations go back
to using powder and ball
or bows and arrows
to fight their wars.

In a world without electricity,
movie stars,
professional athletes,
and paparazzi
are forced to find new occupations.

In a world without electricity,
humanity returns
to hunting and gathering,
while story-tellers
sing the praises
and proclaim the marvels
of our lost utopia.

In a world without electricity,
there is still the power of faith,
of love,
of human ingenuity
and imagination.

Write a piece narrating a typical day for you. If you want create a fictional character and allow him/her to experience your day.

A typical snow day can be a little boring,
a bit of a snoring.

I wake up and force myself to get off the couch. I don't have a bed in this house any more and if I did I couldn't sleep on it because it would be too painful. I have not been able to sleep comfortably in a bed since 2007, which only leaves the couch or the love seat for me to sleep on. I force myself to sit up, find my glasses, find my thyroid tablet because I have to take it an hour before I eat or drink coffee.

I take my medication, check the time on the microwave or the coffee maker and hope I checking the one that isn't five minutes fast. This is my own fault because I set both of those clocks sometime in the spring. I refuse to set either one again until the time falls back or we have a brown out. I turn the coffee maker on. I check to see if I need to do laundry because I cannot take a shower or wash dishes while the washing machine is running. If I have to do laundry then I start the washer and go back into the living room to turn on one of the computers. I say my prayers and then I check to see if I have trash to take out, if I have trash I carry it to the garage before I pick up the newspaper.

Once back in the house, I pour me a cup of coffee, hoping it has been an hour since I took my medication. I go back into the living room, turn on the other computer, and log into writing.com. After that, I check the other website I need to check and then glance at one or more of my e-mail boxes. I compose a blog entry and then remember that I should dry the clothes in the washer otherwise they will sit there until the next day. I then fix me something to eat after which I do a room check (looking for dishes to wash) and then I wash the dishes hoping that I have gotten all the dirty dishes. I know this is an impossible hope because no matter how often I look for dish before washing them, I always miss one items.

That is my typical boring day. My day is a little more exciting if I have to leave the house. Before I composed this entry, I suspected my day was boring (the exception is writing.com), but now I am sure. I am not going to complain about my boring life because every time I complain about the boredom life or fate decides to prove me wrong.

Serial Prompt! Part Two: It's the apocalypse! On the first day (yesterday) tell us about how you predict the world will end (aliens, mass flooding, nuclear war, etc) and what both your initial reaction and the initial reaction of the governments of the world would be. On the second day (today) give us a run-down of how you plan to survive the apocalypse for the long term. "Must Have" lists, "To Do" lists, etc. Where will you take refuge? Have fun with this. *Bigsmile*

My Must Have Apocalypse Survival List

*Bookopen* My Prayer Book
*Note0* A Solar Oven
*Note1* My Medication
*People* Friends & Family

I am not sure I would survive the apocalypse, at least not if I were by myself. I know I could not survive without my medication. I do not think I could survive by myself and I am not sure I would want to survive alone. I need human interaction. I need to feel the huge of a friend or family member to help me keep what little of my sanity is left. If I had to survive by myself I would be a basket case.

My Apocalypse Survival To Do List

*Check1* Find another human being

I am not sure where I would take refuge. Since I live in Las Vegas, I would probably attempt to go into the mountains. The problem is finding food to eat and water to drink. I am cannot tell the difference between poison oak or poison ivy berries and wild editable berries. I would have difficulty catching and dressing my own meat. If the meat is a bird of some type, dressing it (all though I still cannot figure out why removing feathers from a bird is called dressing it) would be no problem. I can easily pluck feathers from a dead bird and singe the pinfeathers off. I might have problems removing its guts, especially if it were a small bird.

The question I would really like answered is "Is it worth surviving if I am by myself?" Solitude is all right for short periods of time, but a person cannot remain along a long time without going stark raving mad. I am not sure I would want to survive if I were along, I would attempt surviving because I am just too damn suborn to give up and admit the survival is impossible. I am not sure I could do it along, but I would make an attempt.

Grab the nearest book. Open it and go to the tenth word. Do a Google Image Search of the word. Write about what the image brings to mind.

I grabbed the nearest book, opened it to an random page, and went to the tenth word. That word was desire. I did a a Google Image Search using the word and found a picture of a man jumping off a cliff. The following words were printed on the picture.

DESIRE
If you greatly desire something, have the guts to stake
everything on obtaining it. ~Brendan Francis

To achieve the goal of my desire
cliff diving is necessary.

I must jump off the cliffs of my fears
and dive
into the cold unknown
ocean faith,
believing in my ability
to find my desire
through shark infested waters.

That poem is the first thing that came to mind. Finding my desire requires four things (1) faith, (2) prayer, (3) sacrifice, and (4) effort. In order to achieve any goal I need to take a leap of faith and sacrifice my fears upon the altar of my effort. I hope what I am saying makes sense because for sometime now I have realized I have to make some changes, but something seems to be holding me back. I am not sure whether it is fear of failure, fear of success, or something else. Maybe I am afraid to jump off the cliffs of comfort into the cold waters of the unknown.

I like the picture because the guy jumping off the cliff, taking the leap of faith, looks as if he is having fun. He appears unafraid of the ocean and what may confront him in his pursuit of the goal of his desire. I think part of my problem is I am afraid to get out of my comfort zone and jump into the unknown. Well, I cannot stay on this cliff of comfort forever because it is getting uncomfortable and the stone is hard to walk or sit on.

An approaching catastrophe, the
Prophesized destruction of civilization
Or humanity. Is the the results of a
Calamitous invasion by extraterrestrial
Aliens or is it the fault of humanity's
Lackadaisical environmental attitude?
Year after year, we stomp our carbon foot-
Print into the bowels of Earth
Seriously damaging the
Environment of our home world.

Humanity does not need aliens to do something that it appears to be doing for itself. If we are invaded by aliens it will be because they took pity on us and decided we needed a bit of help to rescue the environment and us from ourselves.

How will the world end? The polar ice caps will melt drowning the coastal cities and forcing a migration into the interior regions of all the continents. Governments will react in the predictable manner by declaring marshal law. This will result in pissing off the NRA, PETA, conspiracy theorist, numerous terrorist organization, and anyone intelligent and wealthy enough to build his or her own nuclear bomb. After all those people and organizations have been pissed off, the rest of us will pray for an alien invasion because it will be the only way the planet and humanity will survive.

This is my Sunday Review for the week of September 22 to September 28, 2013.

I am excited about "October Novel Prep Challenge and my novel Midnight in Suburbia. I am so excited that I am actually prepared to begin planning the novel on October 1. I have created my planning book "Invalid Item and came to several decisions about the novel. Normally, I would wait until October 1 to make these decisions, but this year I cannot afford to put them off because I suspect, that with everything going on in my life, I will have difficulty meeting some of the deadlines. This suspicion (perhaps fear is a better word) may explain the dreams I have experienced the last two nights. If you are interested in those dreams check "Driving a School Bus and "Of Dogs and Lawyers in "Dreams of Snow .

I have to admit that I am a bit nervous about October and the goals I have established for the month. I have all sorts of rears racing through my mind and, at times, causing me to panic and visualize all sorts of worst case scenarios. I have heard listing your fears helps alleviate them, but I am not sure I believe that. Perhaps I should test it by making a list of my fears. I think the fears are unfounded and cause by not knowing what the future holds. The best way for me to alleviate them is to be a well prepared for October as I can.

My "October Novel Prep Challenge Survival Kit

*Coffeebl* Black coffee made fresh everyday or warmed up in a microwave if I have leftover coffee from yesterday
*Clock* An oven timer so that I can time my writing to 15 or 20 minutes settings
*Bookopen* Words of God: A Compilation of Prayers and Tablets from the Baha'i Writings (large print edition) because the words are large enough for me to read without difficulty and the book belonged to my mother
*Coffee* My mother's favorite coffee cup which I will use when working on the assignments
*Clock2* An alarm clock so that I do not oversleep of a morning
*Note0* 3 x 5 note cards to put by my computer to save random thoughts
*Utensils* Food that I can heat up in the microwave so that I have something quick and easy to eat

I am going to close this now because I just received the Serial Prompt for the last two days of the official "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS. I want to write on that after I eat something and take my pain medication. I pulled something in my left knee last night getting up from a chair because "GETTIN' OLD IS NOT FOR SISSIES! and I do not have the time or the patience to deal with emergency rooms or urgent care clinics. The only thing the doctors there are going to do is tell me to stay off the leg, which is impossible because besides writing I am in the process of getting ready to move.

Write a poem or a piece of prose in which the last two words are 'good-bye.'

You ask me why I cry,
you want to know why I sigh,
but I want to know why you lie
when you text me.

You text
"I love you!"
when you really mean
"I do not love you!"

Both sentiments are within
the 160 character limit
of a text message.

Why is texting the truth
more difficulty for you
then texting a lie?

I want to know why!

Since my request,
and probably your answer,
exceeds the limits of a text,
I am sending you this letter
to say "Good-bye!"

Write a humorous warning label that doesn't exist but should. If you are ambitious, write more than one.

*Blush* Warning: (affixed to every cup of coffee or glass of iced tea) This liquid is a diuretic and drinking it could results in a sudden and irresistible urge to find a toilet.

*Smirk* Warning: (appears at the beginning of every computer game) This game is addictive and may prevent you from going outside and walking in the sunlight. This could result in a pale vampire like complexion. Beware of vampire hunters with mallets and wooden stakes.

*Angry* Warning: (flashes on the television screen at the beginning of every political commercial) This is a paid political announcement and could result in sudden, uncontrollable fits of anger. Please refrain from throwing the remote control at the television screen.

*Yawn* Warning: (on every container of hot chocolate) Consuming this liquid could cause sudden drowsiness. Please avoid operating a computer when drinking hot chocolate because you may fall asleep on the keyboard.

*Wink* Warning: (given to everyone standing in line) Standing in this line for long periods may cause to start a conversation with the person in front or behind. Please refrain from fraternizing with the people in this line because it could lead to mutual understanding and world peace.

What is your opinion on how schools (high school and/or college) teach sexual education? How did your school handle some of the sensitive subjects? (If you are at all uncomfortable on this topic, feel free to discuss your opinion on any aspect of the education system that you feel needs revision.)

I suspect or I hope, that the school system is covering more on sex eduction today then they covered when I was in high school. I do not remember what I learned about this subject in the classroom, if I learned anything there or not. Most of what I learned about sex in high school had to do with extracurricular activities (and I am not referring to sports). I am not going to discuss my sex education in high school high school.

I think sex education should be taught in schools, but I think high school is little late the start the classes. I think these classes should be started in middle school and then expanded in high school. All right, perhaps that is a somewhat radical on this subject, but if children have accurate information they are less likely to do something stupid before they understand the consequences.

Thought of the Day: "Does sex education encourage sex? Many parents are afraid that talking about sex with their teenagers will be taken as permission for the teen to have sex. Nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, the more children learn abour sexuality from talking with their parents and teachers and reading accurate books, the less they feel compelled to find out for themselves." - BENJAMIN SPOCK, Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care

What is the weirdest place/time where you've found inspiration to write?

My life is weird (which sounds like a good theme for October's Unofficial Blog Challenge) and I expect my life to get even weirder over the next two months. My life has been weird since I took Mom to the hospital Emergency Room in 2007 (Mom had an intestinal blockage). Since then my life has gotten weirder and weirder, while events have progressed from the amusing to the bazaar and back again several times. Weird has become such a common occurrence in my life that it now appears ordinary. All right, perhaps I am exaggerating on just how weird my life has became and will become in the next two months.

Weird
is a matter of perspective,
an individual point of view.

What is the weirdest place and/or time where I have found the inspiration to write? The most recent was yesterday when I was cleaning out closets. I was removing clothes (some of which I have not worn since 2007) from my closet and putting them in trash bags to give away. After moving from my bedroom into the third bedroom, I realized that I had too many clothes. I used the title "Too Many Clothes" for a blog entry.3

Outside
the walls of weird
others see your life
as normal.

Since I am "Living Inside the Walls of Weird" everywhere and when I receive inspiration to write can be considered weird. I receive inspiration taking a shower or going to the toilet. I receive inspiration while driving west on Sahara Avenue or east on Charleston Avenue. For me, getting stuck in traffic is an inspiring experience. I got the idea for the working title of this year's NaNo novel while reviewing a short story. The weird thing is that the short story had nothing to do with the title or the theme/subject of my upcoming novel. The name just popped into my mind while I was reading and remained there after I finished the review.

Here are the reasons my life will be getting weirder in October and November. First, I am in the process of cleaning out the house and getting ready to move into a studio apartment or assisted living facility. Second, I am participating in "October Novel Prep Challenge. Third, I am participating in "Invalid Item. Then in November I am writing Sunset in Suburbia a novel based on my experience as my mother's caregiver.

Meditate and write on this quote: "Sometimes you put walls up not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to break them down." ~Socrates

Stone by stone
my fears constructed
walls to keep you out.

I did not create
a door or gate
to let you inside my life,
but like the tree roots
that penetrate boulders
you patiently
worked each day
to pierce the walls
of my isolation
and let yourself inside.

"You've just won an infinite supply of ________! If you could have an infinite supply of anything (has to be something you can physically touch) what would it be?

Ordinarily, I would answer this question by saying an infinite supply of coffee or chocolate, but a recent event has caused my life to pass from the ordinary to the extraordinary. This event is the closing date, October 30, 2013, of the selling of the house I now inhabit. Right now, I would like an infinite supply of packing materials, so that I can get everything packed, labeled, and ready to ether take with me or give away.

My realtor told me yesterday, that the mortgage company had accepted his offer for the short sale. The wanted to know a closing date, so I chose thirty days from today which would have made the closing day October 23. I wrote the letter and had it ready for the realtor this morning. When he and his wife arrived at my house, they said the mortgage company would agree to October 30, 2013. This gives me a week longer to get everything ready, given away, or put in storage and myself moved into a smaller place. What I really need at this time is an infinite supply of packing material, such as boxes, bubble wrap, etc.

The extraordinary,
the miraculous,
events of every-day-life
raise their beautiful heads,
unexpectedly,
above the chaos
of impending disaster.

Miracles arrive silently
or spectacularly,
the only requirement
is our readiness
to experience them
and willingness to accept
their arrival.

Food for Thought: "Miracles come in moments. Be ready and willing." - Wayne Dyer
