Here are words I like to write
All day long 'til it is night.
Words go up and words go down
When complete approve the sound.

If you complete my little rhyme,
Things will come your way in time.

Prompt: Write about your first job and what it taught you.

My first full-time job was as a mail clerk for Pacific Telephone Company. I was nineteen, a newlywed, and extremely nervous about starting a job. I did not need to be nervous. I had the job down pat after three days. Our building had a cafeteria but there was hardly enough time to get through the food line and eat. I brought my lunch every day. I made $1.95 per hour or $78.00 a week. There was no charge for our medical benefits and life insurance equal to one year’s salary was also free. You could take up to 4 weeks of paid time off for maternity leave. I did that twice.

I learned how to dress for work, the importance of being on time, and how to enjoy work because I spent one-third of my life there. When I signed out from my last job, on the last day, I never looked back. I did not miss the job, comradery, and the great feeling of helping clients. I did miss the cafeteria at the last job. They made a mean tuna salad sandwich!

Prompt: On November 3rd Black Bart makes his last stagecoach robbery. I've included the link if you're needing some inspiration. If you lived in the 1800's and wanted to commit a robbery, what kind of robbery would you commit and where do you think it would be ideal to commit your crime? Or maybe you'd rather be like Stagecoach Mary the daring black woman who protected stagecoaches instead of choosing a life of crime. Have fun and remember the minimum is five lines to be counted. Maybe you'll be inspired.

The way I would commit a robbery in 1777 is to go to the theatre. The theatre you ask? Why there? At that time, the wealthy had their own private theatres where they watched plays, listened to opera, and other offerings. At the time Black Bart was doing his thing with stagecoaches, the rich were going to their theatres. There were a few with toilets available to the audience. I would station myself in that area and offer to hold the women's reticules (handbags) as they did their business. I would lift their money, return it to them before they walked back out the door, and be long gone before they would discover their loss. I would never get caught and retire to live out my days in warm and sunny Florida.

Black Bart robbed at least twenty-eight stagecoaches from 1877-1883. He was afraid of horses so did his thievery on foot. He was caught and served a prison term at San Quentin. At two of his robberies, he left a poem. Here they are:

‘Once I toiled for gold in ditches,
Now with ease I amass riches,
Daniel; now I’m on this lay,
I’ll come against another day.'”

‘Daniel, it grieves me to say it,
Next time you attempt to play it,
Buy an overcoat of pine,
And I’ll send the corpse in time.’”

Prompt: Today is Cookie Monster Day. Write about your favorite Muppets or cookies or write about both for your Blog entry today.

I attended school in New Jersey. When my younger sister was in middle school, she had a crush on Richard Hunt who was going to go on as a puppeteer on Sesame Street. Richard was taken by my sister too. He put on puppet shows in our town and towns around us. Richard was cute, shy, and extremely polite. My sister was pretty and shy, and very polite. They were in middle school and the longevity of boyfriend/girlfriend lasted about a minute, but they remained friends. We moved to California at the end of that school year so did not see him in person again.

"Richard Hunt did not have a face known to many -- his voice was known more than anything else. He was a major stronghold behind Jim Henson's "Muppets". 'Scooter', 'Janice', 'Sweetums' and a few others, were some of the "Muppets" that Richard was a performer and puppeteer of. He helped pave the way for Jim Henson and his company from the 1970s through the early 90s, until his surprising death in 1992 AIDS."(source:IMBd.com). May he rest in peace.

I have always loved Kermit. "The Rainbow Connection" is my favorite Sesame Street song.

The Rainbow Connection
~written by John Williams and Kenneth Ascher

[Verse 1]
Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions
But only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong wait and see

[Hook]
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection19
The lovers, the dreamers and me

[Verse 2]
Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
Look what it's done so far
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?

[Hook]
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

This was the opening song in the original Muppet Movie. The lyrics meant finding yourself and following your dreams. The deeper meaning of the poem is the importance of believing in something greater than yourself. The song was nominated for an Academy Award in 1979. Kermit sang the song at the awards ceremony in 1980.

My favorite cookie is Tollhouse chocolate chip.

Prompt: Write about a magical pumpkin that comes to life.

T
The Extra-ordinary Pumpkin

It was the morning of Halloween, before the sun was up, when Liam sat hunched at his desk drawing a picture of the face he intended to carve into his pumpkin. He would start, stop, crumble one up, and begin again.

"I can't get this right, Mom," he moaned.

"It doesn't have to be perfect, buddy. Just draw triangles for eyes, a round hole nose, and big smile with teeth.'

"No, that ain't right. I need a wizard."

He sighed and said he would keep drawing. Mom returned to making biscuits. She would whip up the gravy in no time. Good job, she told herself. Mama would be proud. Without warning her wet tears soon dripped onto the hot stove. As she mopped them up, she thought of Mama. She imagined the sheer panic gripping her and pounding through her veins when the wrong-way driver hit her car, squishing the car and her. Liam chose a good time to stop those horrible thoughts.

"There!" he exclaimed triumphantly. "Perfect."

Diane picked up his drawing. Triangles for eyes, a round circle for the nose, and a huge smile with three teeth on top and one on the bottom. He told her he really wanted a wizard. She smiled and sat at the table to help. They moved one muscle when his little sister called for Mama.

“Sorry, buddy. I’ll be right back.”

Liam looked back at his pumpkin, now a wizard with a pointed hat, a beard, and a gold lightning bolt on his velvet robe. The wizard jumped off the table wildly waving his wand.

“Milo the Wizard at your service, Liam.”

“But, hhhhhooooow,"

“I am the wizard of your future. You shall teach your son to cut his pumpkin. He will ask for a character. You, Liam my boy, will show him the right way. Your wife will make biscuits and gravy. Your son will draw his idea for his pumpkin’s face. I will appear and tell him his daddy is correct. Triangle eyes, a round nose, and a huge wide smile with teeth. That’s the way it has always been, and so it shall be.”

“Really? Wait just a minute, my mom will be right back. Oh wait, I hear her coming.”

Liam glanced over his shoulder. He called down the hallway. “Mom, you will never guess who is right here.”

He turned back and Milo was waving his wand looking Liam square in the eyes.

“And that, my boy, is how family traditions are started. Be sure to pass it on. Until we meet again!”

I am ready for the blogging challenge for November. I do miss days each month so I have a note I set by my computer while I am in WdC to remember to blog. Oftentimes I forget until after 9 PM my time which is midnight WdC time. Thankfully that will change to 10 PM with the cessation of daylight savings time.

I have recently started using a black font for a while. I feel the blue was hard to read.

That is all.

This morning I read my weekly newsletter from author Ashley Neese. She wrote:

"I like to think of myself as a plant in my garden that needs water, good soil, sunshine, and gentleness to grow. If I can nourish myself at that fundamental level, it can support my capacity in spades. It can help me go through whatever it is I need to go through."

I like that thought. I should learn from it. I need to nurture myself. Take care I feed my body and my mind. Remember there is more to my life than checking tasks off on my just do it list.

I promise myself I will do that...right after I finish a couple of things on my just
do it list.

I am flipping channels. World Series, news, World Series, news. Happy and sad. Elation (my team is winning) and sad about what happened in Maine.

The people who run our contests are amazing. The time alone takes commitment. Some contests have tons of entries. Keeping everything straight is a major feat.

I ordered a dog costume of Buzz Lightyear for Jack (our dog). I reversed the numbers of my address. Figuring it would be returned to the company, I reordered one. It came today. The first one also came today. Costumes could not be returned after Oct. 15th. I looked at the website. All of the costumes on display are for Christmas. When it comes to putting a costume on a dog, forget about it! It stayed on for as long as it took to grab a photo.

I am doing really well in journalism. When I was in 8th grade I worked on the school newspaper. A friend has a copy of one of my articles. That may have been a hint of a possible career path. I have always loved to write.

Baseball game score is tied. Now in the 10th inning.

I was on a roll doing reviews this morning. For the first time, I did two pieces from one author. I did one then a second one crossed my eye. It was my first time reading. I was visiting the Veteran's group. I made a donation and was able to pick an MB. I picked the dove. Here he is and the neat poem he wrote.

Prompt: Let it be and Let it go. How often have you used these concepts to get through problems that arise?

I wish I heeded this advice 50 years ago. I hang on to problems and think about them playing every scenario I can think of to solve them. I take it a step further and think of all the consequences there will be. What will go wrong? For example, I am always nervous about going in for a physical. I have to get on the scale and my weight is never where it should be. I obsess over what to wear and what the doctor will ask.

Yesterday, I went to see a new primary care physician. I was nervous because I wanted to make a good impression. I had the perfect pants and shirt picked out. I found I could fill out my paperwork online. I worked on that for a good bit of time. I reached the end and the system would not let me sign the forms I needed to sign. The information, then, was not completed. Yup, just like I thought, something was going wrong already. When I got to the office I told them of my dilemma. I did sign the forms and got through the check-in process in no time.

Into the exam room, I went. An assistant weighed me, took my vitals, and asked for some of the information I had already keyed in. Asking for my meds, etc. I had thought of every little thing that could go wrong. Other than the paperwork it went smoothly. I liked the doc. She was kind and took the time to explain what she would do to follow up and answered all of my questions. I had no reason to have stressed so much over the appointment.

When I got home I reviewed in my mind everything that happened. Now there was a follow-up up and I started sweating about what the blood tests would show. Did I have something really bad? Maybe my cancer from 23 years ago was back. I could not keep thinking like that. It got me nowhere but stressed out.

Then this Blog City prompt came for today. Do you have things that come just at the time you need them? Someone will say or do something that you need to do. I had to be reminded to start letting life's problems be and let it go. I know logically that my anxious fears are unfounded. I know I should trust that all will be fine. I always have someone with me for support. I do the same worrying about things I have no control over.

I will make these resolutions for myself. A good choice would be to type up the serenity prayer and tape it up where I can see it every day. Now that I know the routine at this doctor's office, I will not stress over the next visit. The test results will be what they will be. If there is an issue, the doctor will have a solution. It is her job to take care of that. I need to let her do her thing, and trust what will be will be, and let it go.

I feel a lot better about future problems. Bring them on! I am ready.

Prompt: Mentors
What do you think about mentors? Has a mentor been helpful with your life? If you didn't have a mentor, describe a favorite teacher or relative who helped you.

I heard the word mentor at my first job when I was 19. The director of my department called me into her office. She told me I was doing a great job. I was a mail clerk. She offered to mentor me. Soon after I was promoted. She gave me advice to obtain the skill sets needed to move to the next level position.

I participated as a volunteer in a homeless children's mentor program in my city. I mentored one teenager who turned 16 while I was mentoring her. She had never had a birthday party. I told her I was giving her a party and asked her where she would want to hold it. She said Jack-in-the-box was her favorite place. She invited her only friend and the three of us had a great time. She ended up disappearing with her family one night. She called me once to tell me she was safe in Texas. I was assigned a younger girl about 8. She loved to go out to lunch. She ate her food fast acting like she had to do that so no one would take it. Her name was Victoria, my favorite girl's name. She called herself Tori for short.

When I became active here at WdC last earlier this year Schnujo wrote a welcome in my notebook. I responded to thank her. She wrote back and I wrote her back and forth and before I knew it she was mentoring me. For me, it was a lifeline to navigating here. I am now paying it forward welcoming Newbies.

I had a 5th-grade teacher who left a lasting impression. Her motto was results not excuses. I have followed this advice in every aspect of my life since then.
