Recycling My Grandparents had recycling down to a science. glass jars served year after year as containers for jellies, jams, pickles, and bacon grease. Coming form the old school-- of "Waste not want not!"-- nothing usable was ever discarded. Torn clothes were mended. Worn out clothes were cut up as rags to wash the car or the commode.
